What if we were to tell you there's a house that transports you to 2030 and 1960 at the same time?
Welcome to the Shag House in Palm Springs, California.
The Shag House in Palm Springs is a living piece of pop art designed by the artist Josh Agle.
It mixes vintage mid-century modern architecture with Shag's bold playful style in every corner
and just like one of his prints, it's packed full of surprises, custom decor,
and so many thoughtful details you won't know where to look next.
And yes, you can actually rent it either for a stay or a private event at the link below.
Welcome to the Shag House. Come inside. I want you to check out this living room because basically
I have stepped foot inside a mid-century modern retro future, but if you notice this wall back
here, it was inspired by bedrock. Yes, the Flintstones bedrock, the Hanna-Barbera classic
cartoon. It's kind of like a peanut brittle. It's called peanut brittle, I think. It's called
peanut brittle. Yeah, I think it is. It's like a peanut brittle type wall, which kind of looks like
I see a custom Eames. This is also, yes, a custom Shag Eames. With Mai Tais on it. And I want to
take this ottoman and drink the Mai Tais. Look how cute the little Mai Tais are. Oh my gosh.
Look how cute those are. But also, wait, wait, you have to see this operation game.
This house is incredible. I mean, everywhere you go, there's something unbelievable. And fun fact,
the owner, Brandon, he said his head is made of rum. So the Bacardi is the head of this.
And you can take them out. Yeah, you can take them out. Like here's the Hennessy.
Here's the Jack Daniels, all the good things. Oh yeah.
Over here, these are custom made chunk lights that Sam is obsessed with. I'm obsessed with
chunk lights. If you know chunk lights, if you're a chunk light groupie. He's a chunk light groupie.
You know that they are really expensive. And these were custom made for the home. Yes,
so these are new, not vintage, but because they were custom made. Also, look at the,
like every single detail. It's literally everything. People are going to,
their brains are going to explode when we show them the rest of the house. All right,
so this is the kitchen. We've got this beautiful, what's this called? Oh yeah.
It's Corian, but it's terrazzo looking Corian. So got to have that. We've got this beautiful kitchen.
We've got, it's time for a drink. I agree. I can't wait to have time for a cocktail.
We're going to do it. Yay. Kitchen, beautiful, but there's way more this way. Like the real
piece de la resistance. What about this really fancy espresso?
Shag with a twist. I think you can probably buy those online. Oh yeah. All right. First bedroom.
This is the cat bedroom. Meow. Meow. As you can see, like this is what's so crazy about this
place is like you keep looking and you keep finding. So you have the cat clocks. I know for
these little tails, you've got the cat, um, kind of a very aristocats, cat lights, yes.
Cat pillows, cat eyes on the bed. This is where it starts to get crazy. Like hold it,
hold it over your face here. I'm going to give you two eyes. I mean, come on. This is content
people. Unbelievable. We got the cat eyes, whatever. We got cats on the wall. It says meow,
but, and then talk about how this is, this wallpaper is all the wallpaper here is custom.
So it's every single piece of wallpaper has been made for the room. It's in obviously meow, meow.
That's for the cat room. Let's go to the other room. Come on, let's go.
Cause there's other things to see. We've got the Tiki room. This is the room
that I would want to stay in. I love Tiki. Oh my God. Look at this. Again, custom wallpaper,
Tiki stuff. Tiki, the bedspread is custom shag Tiki. I don't know why I would expect anything
else. These, look at those. We've got the skulls. There's even, this is a shag bag with Tiki things
on it that I'm sure you can buy if you love it. I feel like I've stepped into the jungle cruise.
That's what it feels like. Yeah. Even better. Look at this. Look at these. Look at all of this
artwork is custom for the house. Unbelievable. This room is cool. Cause it goes right out onto
the pool, which we'll get to in a second. Love it. Let's do this other bedroom.
This is like, I don't even know what you would call this. Like a Chinese inspired room. Yes.
You've got a dragon. I was going to say Godzilla, but then people go crazy in the comments. I know
it's a dragon, not Godzilla. I mean, look at these. I know I got to get, look at these. So
these are custom made lantern lights. Lantern lights. Gorgeous. And then look at, what? The
pillows are. These are all custom made too. These are the scales of a dragon. So I'm going to call
this the dragon room because that's clearly what's going on here. Yes. You've got even the side
tables. Obviously here, we've got a shag specific one with kind of an Elvis looking guy and then a
velvet painting. Oh, this is velvet. That's velvet. So I think that's real vintage.
But which is your favorite room? Let us know below. Andrew, what's your favorite room? My
favorite room is the tiki room. You want the tiki room? I would want the tiki room too. Yeah. So
what do you guys want? Which room do you guys like? Let us know which room you want to stay in.
So this home has two working bars and I'm going to show you my favorite one, which is over here,
which I mean. Oh my God. Look at this. Look at, who wouldn't want a classic cocktail? This,
I never want to leave this place. Also look at the ceiling. If you pan up to the ceiling,
it's kind of like a Swiss cheese kind of ceiling. And this artwork back here was also custom made
just for the home by Shag. Shag, we should talk about Shag a little bit. He's an artist. He has a
store in Palm Springs. You can buy all sorts of stuff in. And his vibe is very like mid-century
modern having parties at houses. Yes. Yeah. These drink, I mean, these chairs. Drink.
Drunk. You should mug for that. This, this is going to be Sam later.
Um, I mean, also there's more bags. Gosh, we just, what if I hold that up to your face?
Look at that. Yeah. Look at that bag. Look at that bag. Look at this. And then even more.
I just want to sit here. You could just sit here all day.
Ah, just chill. I mean, I want these things behind you. Look at. Also this couch is very
comfortable. All different tiki drinks. And the colors are so conducive to wanting a cocktail.
We know we'll get one. Don't worry.
Okay. Let's show them this. Look at this. Everywhere you go, everywhere you go to sit,
everything has been thought about. Also these chairs are awesome. And who better to tell you
the rest of the house than the charismatic owner himself, Brandon.
Hi guys. Welcome to my house. This is Brandon. I know Andrew was just in here,
but this is my favorite room of the house. The ceilings in here, I think just really make this
kind of man cave for me, but it's just the fun space, obviously with the bar. Um, I spent a lot
of time in this room, but behind me, we have the mammoth martini. This is a print that, uh, the
artist Shag did originally for the house a year and a half prior to us starting their construction
on the backyard. So if you take a look at the globes here, the tiki mask, the orange and white
tile, the round rooftop bar, the panels, the chair, the sculpture, and you follow me to the backyard
here, take a look what we brought to life. But if you see behind me, we've got the globes,
the tiki mask, the orange and white tile, the round roof top bar, the panels, the sculpture.
And that was part of the fun in the challenge of bringing this vision to life from a piece of art.
Um, and sometimes that was not easy. So that round rooftop bar you see there
actually only has three supports. Uh, half of the roof is floating.
Nobody wanted to make that thing. And so after the fourth contractor told me, no,
I went back to Josh and said, Hey, can we do a square roof, a thatched roof, something like
that? And he said, no, you guys posted the rendering on Instagram. So we have to do it.
So I thought, Oh damn, it has to be round. So we found someone to make it. And it's actually
made out of steel. It's welded. And I couldn't get a crane back here at that time. So I called
up eight of my friends, four of us, uh, were down below and the other four up above on the roof,
you're hoisted up there. And I held it there for an hour while they welded it in place. So
it was worth it. My blood, sweat, and tears have gone into this house. Literally
some of the challenges for sure, but this makes such a great entertaining space out here. Seats
12. Um, really just wanted to create these various cool spaces to hang out. We've got the
Parker lounge over here as well. Uh, inspired by the Parker hotel, um, with these outdoor couches,
uh, modifier was the sponsor of this fire pit here. This is a working fire. Why working fire
pit? Absolutely. Yep. And then we've got, we've got these one of a kind pieces of art that you
can't get anywhere that Josh made specifically shag for this room. And then of course that
amazing quote that I love over there by Frank Sinatra, alcohol may be a man's worst enemy,
but the Bible says, love your enemy. God love Frank. And the pool out here is the original
footprint of the pool. Um, but these pools were nine to 12 feet deep back in the fifties and
sixties. They all had diving boards. Um, this pool was nine feet deep when I bought it. Uh,
no diving board had been taken out, but I really wanted to do this tanning shelf.
So you could have this conversation piece between the bar and the outdoor living space
and to have just a cool space where you can kind of hop in, but not really commit to fully going
into the pool. So the Tiki guy, actually, uh, the artist shag made this about, uh, 25 years ago.
And it was actually hanging outside of his house for 20 some years. Uh, he sold that house, uh,
during the construction of this, uh, not related. And he decided that he wanted to put it here.
Originally it was black, but in the rendering on, uh, that we posted on Instagram is actually
purple. So he wanted to, yes. So I actually was like, well, wait a minute. Your rendering is
purple. And he's like, well, yeah, but I like it black. And I said, well, what did we do a poll
on Instagram? So we did a poll on Instagram and the fans voted for purple. So we had the purple
it is. It is, you know, if you put it on Instagram and then it became true,
the hot tub here actually, uh, wouldn't have been here originally, but we built this,
I built this specifically. So you get a little bit raised view of the mountains behind you.
And then I put in an outdoor shower behind it as well. So you, you know,
just got to have that little bit of privacy or not. Yes. Yeah. Wow. And you said that
exactly. We have a three piece stage that comes up, um, in different, uh, three different pieces.
So I painted purple. So when we've done fashion shows, we've had a wedding up here,
actually speakers, a DJ, a band. So it's really is a very unique space. They can be
utilized in a lot of different areas, uh, just from vacation rentals to corporate events,
weddings, birthday parties, et cetera. We actually had a party here for 253 people
called the mammoth Martini party. And we serve martinis in glassware for 253 people.
All right. You'll get invited to my next party for sure. So the swingers signed us. So the
artist likes to buy things and, uh, he just sees things and doesn't know when he's going to use
them. But, uh, in this case, he had this, uh, for probably, I think five or six years in a storage
unit. This is actually from an old carnival ride. Uh, it was the swinger ride is what it was.
Obviously has a little bit of different meaning here in that shack house. Yeah. So we're trying
to figure out where to put that. And, um, at one point he asked me, can I hang that over your bed?
And I said, no, but you can hang it over the door to my bedroom. So that's my bedroom where I live
full time. Come on into my bedroom. So this was a new construction. So we got to have a little bit
more fun with the vaulted ceilings in here, which is wouldn't have been traditional for an Alexander
here, but it kept the style of that era with the diagonal backwards, a slant to this room,
but it also allowed this a really a big giant space to this world map of drinks. So this is
based on shags, uh, travels around the world and all the different cocktails and drinks he's tried.
There's 43 drinks on this wall here. Um, it just so much fun. I actually lay in bed sometimes and
still find things I haven't seen on this. Uh, he also designed the headboard in the, the piece
above. Um, and in fact, I didn't know for almost a year and a half, that's actually a guy sitting
there with a margarita. I was on a tour, uh, not long ago and somebody pointed that out and I go,
Oh my God, I literally slept over this for two years and I did not realize that was a guy.
And so then we had to do a pose of me with the margarita glass sitting on the bed, you know.
So I don't know if you noticed in all the bathrooms, but we did these really vertical
tiles throughout and we actually wrapped one wall to great more illusion of a bigger space.
Because a lot of times you just do tile within the shower, but by bringing this around the wall,
it makes it feel larger and the house. And I don't know if you also noticed there's no
baseboards or casing around any of it to really give it even more of more fluid look throughout
everything. But this one print up here is the only one print we have in the house and it's
near and dear to my heart. Uh, three weeks before we were launching the house to the public for
modernism in 2024, um, my dog Thor that, uh, the artist got to know very well passed away.
Very sad, but, uh, he, uh, came over three days before we were going to launch,
brought me this piece and he put Thor and me in the tub.
Okay. That's as one of 50. And so it's called the long hop bath and he's never done bathroom art
before, but he did this specifically just for me and for Thor. So it will always be near and
dear to my heart. Uh, and my dog will live on forever. And I hope you enjoyed my house.
We're moving in next party is here. We have had a mind blowing experience
