Where did you come from?
Oh, right over there in the wings.
You snuck on, didn't you?
How are you? I'm good.
Good. You look excited. Yeah, I'm very excited.
And what's your name?
Ainsley Burns. And where are you from, Ainsley?
Ainsley, South Carolina.
Oh. You've got a great accent, by the way.
Thank you.
Okay, Ainsley, are you like a comedian or a dancer?
Well, I'm a singer.
Oh, you're a singer? Yeah.
Ainsley is a very small town.
The population is small.
And when I was little,
I used to sing and pretend
like I was on America's Got Talent.
My grandma would get her phone
and she videoed me.
And now I'm in chorus at school,
so I sing a lot for my school.
I would love to sing
for the rest of my life.
So America's Got Talent
is literally my dream.
It's like I'm stepping inside the television
because usually I watch it on TV,
and now when I see it,
it's right over there.
And I'm gonna be on that stage in front of all these people
when I'm just like...
What are you nervous about?
Judges summon.
Just a little bit. I'm really excited.
Yeah, it's gonna be a lot of fun.
I really hope all the judges really like it.
I've never done this before.
Okay, Ainsley,
what are you gonna sing?
Thank My Aretha Franklin.
You're gonna do Aretha Franklin?
Uh-huh. At 12? Yeah.
Okay, you sure? Uh-huh.
Okay. Alright.
The stage is yours.
Ainsley, Ainsley, sorry, babe.
I don't think this backing track
was working for you.
I mean, it was a horrible, horrible backing track.
So I don't think we can judge you properly on this.
I really don't.
We really like you, but that was terrible.
If you're gonna sing Aretha, you've gotta have a great track.
I'm just wondering
whether we should just do a verse and a chorus,
maybe a cappella?
Do you want some water?
Uh, yeah.
Hang on.
Come here. Come here.
It's like magic water.
It's yours.
Well, that just happened.
Okay, let's do it.
Come on, you can do this, Ainsley.
You better think about
what you're trying to do to me.
Think. Let your mind go.
Let yourself be free.
Let's go back. Let's go back.
Let's go way, way back when.
I didn't even know you.
You couldn't have been too much more than two.
I know it's like I just say.
No, don't do it.
I can't see what you're doing to me.
Think about what you're trying to do to me.
Yeah, think.
Let yourself be free.
Oh, freedom.
Freedom. Oh, freedom.
What a fighter, aren't you, Ainsley?
Aretha Franklin.
A cappella.
Three key changes. No track.
Wow. Howie.
You're an amazing person.
As Simon just said,
people don't realize how tough it is.
For an adult to get up on this stage
in front of all these people
and millions of people watching at home
and then to take whatever change
and whatever criticism is given your way
and do it, that is amazing
for somebody twice your age.
Thank you.
Gabrielle, what do you think?
I think your level
of professionalism
at 12?
I mean, I've worked with people
three, four, five times your age
who don't have the talent that you
have in your little finger.
You are really something special.
Thank you.
The minute you actually
sang that a cappella,
I felt like you owned
that song completely, and I feel like
when the track was going,
you can hide behind that. A lot of people
can hide behind that, and at 12 years old,
that could be really scary, not having that
track to support you. You absolutely
crushed it.
And I'm so excited to see what you do.
Thank you.
You've just proved the point.
Personality to me is
as important as technical ability.
You know, it's the person I always remember.
And you, my God,
12 years old, as Howie said,
coming on that stage, I know how scary it is.
We're going to remember you.
You have a great voice. Thank you.
Okay, now
the most... Howie?
Yes.
Gabrielle?
Oh, yes. Two yeses.
I've got to try and do the accent.
Ainsley, Ainsley, Ainsley.
Ainsley Burns, you've got yourself
four yeses.
You're going to the second round, Ainsley!
Woo!
South Carolina!
