Hey guys, today there are all important grammar topics on B1 simply explained.
Are you ready? Let's go!
In this video you will now get a complete overview of all important grammar topics on the B1 level.
And if you understand this here, you really have the grammar under control,
whether for everyday life or the exam.
Let's start directly with one of the most important grammar topics on the B1 level.
And that is the word order.
As you all know, the verb is always in position 2 in a main clause.
And even if you think now, yes, that's easy, I already know that.
Pay attention to your language.
I keep hearing that students make mistakes right here.
For example, I go to the cinema today.
Then there are also subordinate clauses and here the verb is at the end.
So in the main clause, of course, again in position 2, I stay at home today.
And then in the subordinate clause at the end, because I'm tired.
Please also remember that in a main clause position 1 and the information on position 3
can normally be exchanged without problems.
I go today or today I go.
We drink at 8 o'clock or at 8 o'clock we drink.
So and then we come briefly to the connectors.
I just mentioned that in a subordinate clause the verb is always at the end.
Examples are here the connectors because or that.
I go out because the weather is nice.
Or he says he doesn't have time tomorrow.
But then we also have connectors like therefore, then or anyway.
And here the verb is right after the connector, so you could also say on position 1.
It was loud, so I couldn't sleep.
And then there are also connectors where the verb is again in position 2,
because these connectors introduce a main clause.
And that's and, or, but, but, and, because.
I'm going home now because I'm tired.
We go to the cinema tomorrow or we stay at home.
So that means normally the verb is in position 2.
And then there are still connectors where it can be at the end,
on position 1 or also on position 2.
And these are just things you have to learn,
because at the latest from B2 and already from B1,
checkers no longer accept it,
if you make many mistakes with the verb position.
These mistakes don't sound nice and bring your level down.
Then we come to the second point and that is the times.
In German you normally need 5 times,
but we focus on 4 in B1 level.
And the first is of course presence.
We use presence in German not only for the present,
but also for the future and for general facts.
Present. I go to the cinema today.
Future. Tomorrow I meet a friend.
Facts. 3.7 million people live in Berlin.
If I want to speak in the past,
I have two options, namely perfect or preteritum.
It is said that we normally use perfect when speaking,
preteritum when writing,
but it is also completely okay to use perfect when writing.
Perfect. I ate a pizza.
Preteritum. He drank too much yesterday.
But there are a few verbs, and you learn that in B1 level,
which we also use mostly in the preteritum when speaking.
These are sein, haben, the modal verbs and also the verb wissen.
I was tired.
I couldn't come.
I didn't know.
Then you also learn the beautiful time plus perfect in B1 level.
We use these when we have two points in the past
to make a hierarchy clear.
So which of these two points in the past happened earlier.
Classically we use this time with the connector after.
After I fell asleep,
my cell phone rang.
And what we have now expressed with the plus of perfect
happened earlier in the past.
So I fell asleep first and then my cell phone rang,
but both in the past.
And then we have future 1,
we form that with werden plus participle 2,
but we rarely use that when we talk about the future,
but rather for plans or assumptions.
For example, I will work tomorrow.
Or that will be expensive.
That is of course a guess.
I could also say he will be late.
That would also be a guess.
A guess is when I'm not sure.
You could say a bit like a theory.
So let's remember,
we use present for now and for the future.
Perfect for the past in conversation
and a few verbs also like in the past.
Plusquamperfect we use especially with the connector after,
if we want to make it clear that something in the past
happened even earlier.
And future 1 we use for plans and assumptions.
The next topic you should definitely learn in a B1 course
are the modal verbs.
Modal verbs are extremely important.
They show how you mean something.
Obligation, possibility, desire or ability.
I have to get up early tomorrow.
May I park here?
I want to eat an ice cream.
And here are all modal verbs that you learn in a B1 course.
Must, may, can.
Want, should, like and want.
And then you learn in B1 level
but also two alternatives for these modal verbs.
And that is first,
don't need, plus to, plus infinitive.
And second, be, plus to, plus infinitive.
Don't need, plus to, plus infinitive
expresses that I don't have to do something.
Example, you don't have to do that.
Alternative, you don't have to do that.
And be, plus to, plus infinitive
is an alternative for the modal verb
must or can.
For example, you can easily understand the task.
Alternative, the task is easy to understand.
The bill has to be paid by Friday.
Alternative, the bill has to be paid by Friday.
Let's summarize that again briefly.
You need modal verbs every day.
They are super practical to express yourself in everyday life.
And as a little exercise for you,
write a few nice example sentences
with these alternatives,
so don't need, plus to, plus infinitive
or be, plus to, plus infinitive.
Then we come next to subordinate clauses and connectors.
And now it gets exciting,
because now you learn to combine sentences.
For example, we have temporal connectors.
As, as, if or after.
When I was little, I played a lot outside.
Then there are causal connectors like because or there.
And there is a synonym for because.
I stay at home because I'm sick.
Then there are consecutive connectors like therefore.
They express a sequence.
It was loud, so I couldn't sleep.
Then we have the concessive connectors
like although or nevertheless.
I continued to work, although I was tired.
We can also turn that around and say
I was tired, but I continued to work.
But please pay attention to the verb position.
Then you also learn indirect questions.
Can you tell me when the bus is coming?
You also learn double connectors.
I like both coffee and tea.
Either we go to the cinema or we stay at home.
So it is important that subordinate clauses make your German clear,
structured and logical.
So you should definitely learn these.
So people, of course, these were not all connectors yet.
Would you like to learn more,
quite simply and comfortably from home?

Good people, let's continue with the topic of alternate prepositions.
There are prepositions that always go with dative,
there are prepositions that always go with accusative
and there are prepositions that can go with accusative or dative.
And those are on, on, behind, in, next to, above, under, before and between.
And if we want to use these prepositions,
you always have to ask yourself the question where or where to.
If the question is where to and there is a movement,
we need accusative after this preposition.
If the question is where and there is no movement,
we need dative after this preposition.
Examples for accusative
I put the book on the table.
Or we hang the picture on the wall.
But the book is on the table.
Here is the question where.
And the picture hangs on the wall.
Please remember here, where and direction equals accusative,
where equals dative.
And these topics, as well as all the other topics we discuss here,
we have of course treated intensively in the B1 course for the members.
So no matter what topic you have problems with,
if you become a member, you can practice all this again in peace.
Then you will learn something about the genitive in the B1 course for the first time.
Genitive always indicates possession or belonging.
In the spoken language we often use an alternative,
namely von plus dative.
For example, the student's cell phone is new.
In everyday language we would say the student's cell phone is new.
But this noun-noun connection with genitive sounds much nicer.
And then of course there are also important genitive prepositions.
So there are also prepositions
according to which the object that follows must be in the genitive.
And the first is while.
During class you have to turn off your cell phones.
The second is because.
Because of the rule, we stay at home.
Then we still have despite and despite of course expresses an opposite again.
Despite the traffic jam, he arrived on time.
Then we still have city or instead.
Instead of coffee, I drink a tea today.
And last but not least, we have inside and outside
and that can be used locally or temporarily.
Within the city, parking is expensive.
But temporarily, within a week, you will get an answer from us.
Then of course you will also learn something about relative clauses in a B1 course.
With relative clauses you can describe things,
it is also called the relative word, more precisely.
This is the man, who lives next to me.
Please also pay attention to this.
In a relative clause, which is a subordinate clause,
the verb is of course also at the end.
So and in this relative clause we now have more information about the relative word of the man.
I have a car that is very fast.
Okay and here again a little task for you, finish this sentence.
Benjamin is a teacher, and now a relative clause.
That means you describe now more, what Benjamin is for a teacher.
I'm curious about your examples.
So next we have reflexive verbs.
You need these verbs in everyday life all the time.
I'm looking forward to the vacation.
He remembers his school time.
Here you have to understand that there is a difference between real and unreal reflexive verbs.
Real reflexive verbs always need a reflexive pronoun,
like for example, to be interested in.
Unreal reflexive verbs can be reflexive,
but can also be associated with an accusative object.
I wash myself, reflexive.
I wash the car, not reflexive.
And here I would be interested in which reflexive verbs you already use in your everyday life.
Can you write me a few examples in the comments?
Then of course you also learn verbs with prepositions.
Many mistakes are made here, but it's not that difficult.
You just have to learn it.
I'm waiting for the bus.
I'm happy about the gift.
I think of you.
And I'm interested in languages.
It is important to you, the preposition always belongs to the verb,
and I recommend you learn both together.
But remember, not every verb goes with a preposition.
That's just a group of verbs.
Another B1 topic is verbs with two objects.
There are many verbs that only need one object,
usually an accusative or dative object.
I see the man, accusative.
I help the man, dative.
But I give, dative, my girlfriend, accusative, a book.
The verb to give away needs two objects,
because it always involves a person and one more thing.
He explains the grammar to the child.
She gives him the money.
And normally, when we have this structure,
it is always only dative in front of accusative.
There are a few more special cases,
but you are welcome to learn them in my courses.
Then you will also learn your favorite topic in B1,
and that is passive.
In passive, the action is important,
and not who did it.
The house is being built.
The car is being repaired.
So we form passive with become plus participle 2.
And we can also easily formulate this in the preterite.
We don't have to take become, but become.
So I can easily say, the house was built.
And we can summarize,
passive we use more or less in two situations.
First, if the subject doesn't matter.
For example, the bridge is being repaired.
Who does that doesn't matter.
Or the subject is logical.
For example, the food is being prepared in the kitchen.
Then we all automatically know that the cooks do it.
So we don't have to mention that.
And here I have a question for you again.
Do you sometimes use passive constructions in your everyday language?
And if so, you can give me a few examples.
Feel free to write in the comments below.
And please do that too.
That's not just me,
but it's also interesting for other students,
who watch the video later and then read through these comments.
So they get a few ideas and inspirations,
how they can also use passive in their everyday life.
Next we have adjectives and participles.
As you know, we have to decline adjectives in German,
if they are in front of the noun.
That's a big and difficult topic.
But I've already made a few nice videos about it.
I'll link them in the first comment below,
then you can take a look at them again.
Then there is also the comparison with adjectives.
In the B1 course you will also learn,
that you can use participles as adjectives.
And here are two different variants,
Partizip 1 and Partizip 2.
An example for Partizip 1,
the laughing boy.
You can also express that with a relative clause,
namely the boy who is laughing.
Partizip 2, the written book.
You can also express that with a relative clause.
But here the action is already completed
and that's why we use passive here.
The book that was written.
Of course, this is also a bigger and more complex topic,
which we also discussed in detail in my member videos.
Next comes one of my personal favorite topics,
because it is the most practical grammar
that exists in the German language.
And these are the pronominal adverbs.
Ich interessiere mich dafür.
Worauf wartest du?
Darauf warte ich schon lange.
In German we don't say auf das or über das,
we say darauf and darüber.
And here, too, there are two situations
that you have to understand
when we use these pronominal adverbs.
First of all, it replaces already known information,
which we of course expressed with a preposition.
For example, I am totally looking forward to Petra's party.
Here we now have the preposition
and the object that follows,
on Petra's party.
And in order not to repeat that now,
we can replace that with darauf.
So person A says,
I am totally looking forward to Petra's party,
then person B says,
I am also looking forward to it.
Then we don't have to say again,
I am also looking forward to Petra's party.
So that's the first function,
that the darauf, in this case,
replaces information that we already have.
And the second, which is even more practical,
is that we can use these pronominal adverbs
to introduce infinitive clauses and also subordinate clauses.
Indefinitpronomen helfen dir also,
allgemein zu sprechen.
Perfekt für Alltag und Erzählungen.
Und dann das letzte Thema,
was ihr auch in einem B1-Kurs lernt,
ist Konjunktiv 2.
Mit Konjunktiv 2 können wir drei Sachen machen.
Wir können höflich sein,
wir können Vermutungen ausdrücken
und wir können diese Wenn-Dann-Sätze bilden,
diese irrealen Fantasiesätze.
Höflichkeit.
Würdest du bitte das Fenster aufmachen?
Oder könntest du mir bitte helfen?
Vermutung.
was bald rauskommen wird.
Also Leute, vielen Dank fürs Zuschauen.
Vielen Dank für die Jahre der Unterstützung.
Viele von euch schauen mich schon seit Jahren.
Das bedeutet mir wirklich viel.
Danke dafür.
Ich wünsche euch einen schönen Tag.
Bleibt gesund.
Passt auf euch auf.
Bis bald und tschüss.
