Sound Combinations in English | Pronunciation Practice
For a lot of English learners,
pronouncing new words can be really challenging
because you may have noticed that some words in English
just don't seem to follow any sort of pronunciation rule.
I mean, just take the words read and bread.
They have the same vowel combination,
but they sound different.
So what's the rule here and how do you know?
In this video, we're going to explore
some vowel combinations and a couple consonant combinations
that are really common in English
so that you know the different sounds they can make.
And I will also share with you some of my tips
for learning these pronunciations,
remembering how these words sound in English.
Okay, let's go.
In English, there are many vowel and consonant combinations
that may not even exist in your native language.
So it can be really tricky when speaking
and wanting to be understood by native speakers.
Don't get me wrong, accents are very welcome
and you should never feel like you can't speak the language
just because you have an accent.
But it is important in social and work situations
to be understood.
So it's important to know how to go about
these different sound combinations
for you to feel confident when speaking.
First, let's talk about vowel combinations.
English has some common ones,
like E-A, O-U, and I-E.
These can be tricky because they don't always sound the same.
First, let's take the vowel combination E-A.
Now, I already mentioned the words read and read.
They both have the same vowel combination,
but they're pronounced differently.
Usually, E-A either sounds like ee,
or eh, like also in the words clean and weather.
So for the most part, it's one of these two sounds,
but there are, of course, always exceptions in English.
Our next vowel combination is O-U.
This is used in words like house and soup.
So O-U usually sounds like either ow or oo.
Other examples are mouth and group.
Our next vowel combination is I-E.
And usually, it sounds like it does in the word pie.
I-E sounds like pie.
But there's also another pronunciation
of this vowel combination, like in the word field.
So it can sound like ee.
Other examples would be tie and believe.
Now, you might be thinking,
Claire, what about the words great, through, or friend?
They have these vowel combinations,
and they don't sound like either of those sounds.
So of course, as I mentioned,
there are exceptions for each vowel combination.
There is a great tool I can share with you
to help with learning the pronunciation of words in English,
and that's with the Blue Canoe app.
Now, this is the best app that I've found
for learning pronunciation specifically in English.
It's based on the proven color vowel system,
which is a method that triggers the visual,
creative, and kinesthetic parts of the brain
to quickly learn the key sounds and rhythms in English.
So if you're a visual learner,
this one is especially for you.
And if you practice for just 10 minutes a day
with the AI teacher on the Blue Canoe app,
that will give you immediate feedback
on your pronunciation.
You will greatly improve very quickly.
And you get to choose the categories,
such as daily life, work, a specific industry, or school.
So for example, you could practice words
commonly used in customer service,
or maybe you're just at the level
for beginner social conversations.
And the app will help you with your pronunciation,
as well as learning the vowel and consonant sounds
and descriptive skills, things like that.
So you can download that app, the Blue Canoe app,
using the link in this description.
And you even get 20% off using my link
or use the code CLAIR20.
So that is my special offer to you
for this pronunciation app for targeted practice,
specific practice for you,
a visual way to learn these vowel
and consonant combinations.
This could be really helpful for you.
Okay, so let's move on to consonant combinations.
English has quite a few of these as well.
And one of the most challenging is the th sound,
which doesn't exist in a lot of other languages.
Now there are actually two sounds
for this consonant combination.
And the first one is the voiceless th,
like in the word think.
And I usually just tell my students,
gently place your tongue in between your teeth.
And for the voiced th, like in the word that,
it's like making the th sound,
but again, with the tongue between the teeth.
Another consonant combination is ch,
like in the word cheese or church.
So you can practice making that sound.
Another very common consonant combination
is the sh sound, like in the word ship or shoe.
And this is like when you're telling someone to be quiet.
Another aspect of English pronunciation
that is pretty important that you should know
is the R-controlled vowels.
And this is when a vowel is followed by R.
Now of course, I'm doing the American pronunciation
because I'm from America.
So these are a little different in other forms
or in other dialects of English.
But this is the way I would pronounce
these sound combinations.
So let's take a followed by R,
like in the word car or far.
So AR makes the R sound.
IR sounds like er,
like in the word bird or shirt.
That's that combination in my accent, er.
Then we have OR, that sounds like or,
like in the word fork or born.
Okay, now that we've explored some sound combinations,
let's discuss some tips
to help you improve your pronunciation.
My first tip would be listen and mimic native speakers.
Pay attention to how native speakers pronounce words
and try to mimic or imitate their intonation and rhythm.
So you could use my videos, for example.
I'm a native speaker, especially if you live, work,
study in North America where a lot of people have my accent.
So listening to my videos and imitating my speech
and rhythm could be a good option for you.
But there's so many options out there.
Other YouTubers, Netflix, of course,
movies, other social media channels
where you can find native speakers speaking.
Okay, another tip that I have is to record yourself.
So record your own voice and listen for areas
where you are making the same mistakes
or where you can tell you need improvement.
Maybe if you're in a Zoom call,
you could have your phone on the side recording yourself.
Then you can listen back
and find the times you weren't understood
or you might be able to just compare later
words that you thought could have been pronounced
a little bit better.
Maybe there's a certain consonant combination
or vowel combination that isn't always clear.
So you can pick out different times
when you were inconsistent or when you were misunderstood
by the other members of your team or whatever it is.
Listening to yourself can be really useful
when improving pronunciation.
So there you have it.
Sound combinations in English
and how to practice your pronunciation.
Remember that these things take time.
Learning languages, especially as an adult,
is a difficult thing, so keep working on it.
Be patient with yourself and you will see progress.
Use the tips and resources that I've mentioned in this video
to help you feel the most confident you can
when speaking English.
