After a 20-year wait, the Grand Egyptian Museum is finally officially opening its doors
in a lavish ceremony with leaders from across the world attending. The museum is located in
the Giza Plateau, just outside Cairo, where the famous three pyramids and the Sphinx are.
More than 50,000 artifacts are now on display in the largest archaeological museum dedicated
to the Egyptian civilization. Last year, the museum opened 12 galleries to the public,
but after this grand opening, the country's most prized artifact will finally be on display,
the gilded coffin of King Tutankhamun. The coffin went through an eight-month restoration process,
a first since the tomb was discovered over 100 years ago. Egypt is hoping with its new museum,
it will attract more tourists and revive an industry that has taken a severe hit from COVID,
regional instability, and economic decline. Egypt hopes that the unparalleled collection
and the treasures of the Grand Museum would bring in millions of tourists and an influx
of money to one of the Arab world's largest economies.
