Hello, and welcome to our Medical English channel. I'm Irina, a Medical English teacher
with over 20 years of experience at medical schools and a candidate's degree in medical
education. I'm here to help you learn the language you need to understand medical settings
Today, we're going to talk about the different professionals you'll find on a hospital care
team. These people work together to provide the best care possible for patients. Let's take a
look at who they are and what they do, and then do a quiz to practice new lexics. In a hospital,
many health care professionals are involved in a patient's care. It's not just doctors.
Each person has a special role, and they all contribute to the overall treatment plan.
Receptionists. Receptionists are the first people you'll see when you arrive at the hospital.
They handle phone calls, schedule appointments, and direct patients to the correct departments.
Receptionists play a key role in the hospital's organization,
ensuring everything runs on time. Receptionists help reduce stress by answering questions
and ensuring that patients know where to go. Attending physician. Attending physician is
the lead doctor in charge of your care. They make important decisions about your diagnosis,
treatment, and recovery. The attending physician may be a hospitalist,
someone who specializes in managing the care of hospitalized patients. Alternatively,
if your problem requires surgery, the attending physician might be a surgeon. In some cases,
especially in smaller communities, your primary care doctor could serve as the attending physician.
Sometimes, the attending physician will call in a specialist. These are doctors who have
expertise in specific areas of medicine. For example, a cardiologist is a doctor who
specializes in heart diseases. An oncologist is an expert in cancer. A neurosurgeon specializes
in surgery of the brain and spine. Specialists are brought in when a patient's condition is complex
or requires specific knowledge that the attending physician may not have. They provide advice on
diagnosis and treatment. Nurses. Nurses are often the first people you'll meet when you're in the
hospital, and they play an essential role in patient care. Nurses provide daily care,
monitor your health, administer medications, and perform treatments. They're also responsible for
patient education, explaining procedures, answering questions, and helping you understand
your treatment plan. Most importantly, nurses are there to comfort and support you during your
recovery. They're in constant communication with doctors to keep them updated on your condition.
Porters. Next, we have porters. These professionals may not be directly involved
in patient care, but they are crucial to the hospital's daily operations. Porters are responsible
for moving patients between departments, like from a patient's room to the operating room,
or delivering medical supplies to various parts of the hospital. They help ensure that the hospital
functions smoothly and efficiently. Residents, interns, and medical students.
If you're in a teaching hospital, you might also interact with residents,
interns, and medical students. Residents and interns are doctors who have completed medical
school, but are still undergoing advanced training. They work closely with the attending physician
and play an active role in patient care, though they are supervised. Medical students are still
learning, so they are under the supervision of more experienced doctors. They observe patient care
and assist with simple tasks, but they do not make medical decisions. As you can see, each member of
the hospital team has a specific role. The attending physician leads the team and makes decisions.
The nurses care for you and provide support. The porters keep things moving, and the receptionists
make sure everything is organized and efficient. Together, they create a strong team that works
hard to help patients recover and feel better. Thank you for watching today's lesson. Now, it's
time to check your knowledge with a quick quiz. Write your answers in the comments section below.
I'll be checking them. Who is the lead doctor in charge of patient care? Which hospital professional
gives daily care and comfort to patients? Who helps transport patients and deliver supplies
in a hospital? Can you give two examples of medical specialists? Who manages phone calls
and directs patients to departments? Which medical professional is still studying and
only observes patient care? Why is teamwork important in a hospital? I'm excited to see
your answers in the comments. Find more exercises attached. Don't forget to like this video if you
enjoyed it, and subscribe to the channel so you never miss a new medical English lesson. See you there!
