Building a2024 Mercedes Sprinter van into my new home. Today we finish off the VAN SPEED CAPSULE install and INSTALL THE BUNK WINDOWS
Today we are going to complete a project that I started yesterday.
And if you missed that,
we installed the van speed capsules on the back and they look so,
so good.
And today we're going to be installing the van speed bunk windows into that,
completing that whole project. Man, I'm excited to get this one done.
These are going to look incredible. Just to give you an idea.
Look at that. Yeah.
So I'm pretty sure we should do this as a two person job,
but it's only me here at the shops. Wish me luck.
So I figured we're going to put these in from the outside,
tape the window in place. So it doesn't, you know, fall out.
Okay. Here goes nothing.
Let me give that a wipe down.
Does that ever look good? I think this might be a two person job.
We're going to open up the other box just in case there's a left and right to
these. I don't think so, but okay. Glad I checked.
So when I threw this one up in there, this was at the front.
So if it were to rain,
it would come in and just hit this way and probably leak in there.
So I grabbed the other window and it's the opposite.
So the glass is on the front side.
That way when it rains, it just rains past it.
Not going into where the window slides in because that's probably which way it's
going to leak. So they are opposite of each other.
And I just found a video online where somebody said to pre-drill these holes.
It seems like a smart idea. So these things come with self-tapping screws.
So when this goes on the inside, the self-tappers screwed in.
So someone pre-drilled them. And I think that's a really smart idea.
All right, here goes nothing.
Now to screw this on from the inside. Everything looks good.
Window looks straight. It looks great. One bunk window installed.
Let's make sure everything works. Locked. Unlocked.
Pre-drilling is definitely the way to go.
It makes it so much easier on the inside.
Oh, bummer.
That's what you got to do when you don't have somebody outside to hold it.
I couldn't get just a few pieces to keep it in place.
So I had to just keep going and keep going until it was centered.
But it worked. Now that looks really,
really good. So slick.
Now I want to see how much this pod gets in the way of me looking out my side view
mirror, because it does protrude like four inches or so off the side.
All right. Oh, it's not bad.
I mean, most vehicles you're going to see down here anyway,
because this thing's so tall.
It's barely nothing back there. I mean, my camera's on wide angle.
There you go. Not a big deal.
Hey, crazy. You see what I did to the van? Did you see over there?
You see that? Did you see it? You see what I did? Come see.
Come see. What did I do? Look up there. Now when we're in bed,
you can lie there and look out the window, buddy. Yeah, bro.
Now that that project's all done.
Let me go run you through a design idea I had.
I think I'm going to go with a four foot wide bed.
The same bed width that I have right now,
because once the bed comes up into here, you put the extensions in.
It's going to make it like six foot six,
you know, head to toe.
That's insane because my mattress is only six feet.
So that'll make it an extra extra,
I guess, seven or eight or nine inches wider or something like that. Nuts.
But I've been really thinking about how the heck am I going to get my dog
in and out of a bed that is sitting that high?
And I've come up with all sorts of different scenarios.
And then yesterday I seen a picture online and I was like, oh,
I want to create an upstairs in my van, maybe. And upstairs.
But I've seen this idea and I'm like,
is that going to impede on the rest of my home too much?
Let me show you my thought.
Right there, creating a stairwell that goes all the way up into the bed.
So obviously these ones here only have two steps on them
and the bottom one's really narrow, but creating one.
So there's maybe a step down to a step down to a step
and then onto the van floor.
So I'm not sure how far out that has to be to make that safe for the dog.
So it's not like straight down. You know what I mean?
But let me show you what inspired this idea.
That right there.
I don't want to cage off the upstairs too much because I want some airflow
and also to have some heat kicking around back there.
But I love this, this stairwell up into the bedroom idea,
putting a big wardrobe on this side.
I definitely wouldn't close off that wall.
I was talking with Andy at Overland Interiors today
and we're talking about maybe doing like a design piece there
where he hollow cuts out a design in a in a board
that way you could see in the back, create some little airflow.
And it doesn't, you know, cage off that bedroom area.
You go from here, step, step, boom, up into bed.
Cruzy has a nice way to go down and go up.
And doing it this way would work for getting out of bed as well, too,
because when I get out of bed, you're lying this way.
So my butt is kind of right in the middle of the bed.
Would allow me to bring my feet forward.
That's why I don't want to go too far of a wall over here
because I don't want to be like trying to pull my feet up around the wall.
But I come over, spin myself sideways.
My feet would go down on one of these steps,
creating a nice easy way for me to stand up, go down the last stair or so
and get out of bed.
God, it's so cool, right?
So I know a friend of mine also did say,
I need to make sure that I have some kind of ventilation to underneath.
So I got to think about that because I said, don't cage off the bottom,
your garage, make sure there's some airflow
that would definitely impede on the airflow.
But I'm pretty sure we could figure out a way to create some airflow back there.
But I do love that step idea.
And that does come out into the home a bit.
Now, you think it would probably come out even farther, right?
That's a good chunk of the van dedicated to that.
But obviously, I'm not going to be doing
my dining setup like I originally thought about.
Maybe I still am. Who knows?
I'm still in the thinking process.
But this is what I was originally thinking before this idea came up.
That is so cool, right?
Is doing a dining table for two, doing benches longer than those ones,
like big enough that you could probably fit two on each side and a pullout table.
Here's another idea, but not have little skinny ones,
having nice, great, big, wide benches.
I don't like them that small. I think it's cheesy.
But having them nice, good and wide, like maybe three feet wide on each of them.
That was the initial plan.
And then I slept in the van for a couple of nights
and I started to second guess that plan.
So I've slept in here two nights now.
Tonight will be the third night that me and Cruzy sleep inside of this thing,
in the shop.
And it's really got me thinking about the space.
What it is, it's getting up in the morning, getting up in the morning
and realizing, OK, where do I want to step now?
Or how does my morning feel like it wants to naturally unfold?
And the first thing I do in the morning is I sit down at my desk and I edit.
So I'm thinking maybe I should sacrifice the dining table here
for for a couple of people and put in an editing desk,
like legit a full blown office, like an office on wheels.
So when we're out traveling, I can still run the company on the road.
I still have a legitimate office where I can sit down, get some work done,
edit these videos and stuff in the morning, plus getting some business work done.
You know, maybe having an office is important.
So that would take up a good chunk of one wall.
Maybe this wall here, because we still have all this space
that I don't know what to do with.
Maybe here, a nice big long counter goes all the way across here,
comes out into the into the entrance way there.
Maybe this is where I put a full blown desk.
Maybe we put an actual legitimate computer right here.
And maybe we buy an iMac that lives on the counter and somehow we secure it
so it doesn't, you know, break while we're bombing down the bush
and a legit roll in office chair.
So I pull out the office chair here.
I can sit here, get some work done, look out the window and enjoy that view.
Come on. I'm sitting here in the office.
My computer is right here and I can view out the window.
We're on a sunny day.
We leave the door open in the morning,
but that would mean having a legit chair like a rolling office chair
that we just somehow bungee in or keep in somehow
creating a real desk.
Then where do I put my dining table?
I'm thinking we just utilize the two front seats.
I have seen some people that have made some awesome little setups
for for a couple of people up front, mount a lagoon table or something here.
That way, whoever's sitting here, we can snap on the lagoon top.
They can have their own table.
Maybe at the end of this countertop, we have something over here.
So now this one swivels around.
It's got its own table right there.
But a boom, two people can sit there and hang out.
Then someone if they're coming over to hang out, someone can sit at my desk.
Maybe someone sits on the stairs because the stairs to be at a perfect,
comfortable height.
We just hang out and have coffee in the morning or something
like I could legit see myself sitting on these stairs
to tie my shoes in the morning.
It's just a functional space or people are hanging out.
Someone's sitting here.
We're just kind of shooting a you know what?
Having some beers and stuff on a rainy day because I'm camping
with some other people.
This would allow me to fit four people in the van,
which is way more than I can fit in my van now.
And yeah, and having a legit office.
And then on this side, we've got
lots of countertop.
We do a cooktop, a sink, a full kitchen.
Maybe the fridge is right here.
Also, it's the upper cabinets along there
that goes into a great big wardrobe somewhere where I can open the door
and legit hang something nice in there.
And then maybe at the bottom of the wardrobe,
we utilize that space down there as we have maybe a door
that opens up in the bottom of the wardrobe.
And that's where I stuff all my bedding and things in the bottom.
And then under there is a full blown garage.
I don't know, man.
I just thought that having a set of stairs is awesome.
Someone's going to ask me, hey, where's Cruzy?
Oh, he's upstairs.
I have an upstairs in my van.
It's just just cool to think about.
I don't know, guys.
Let me know what you guys think.
It does take up a monster chunk of the van, though.
That literally takes the small bedroom, which would have stopped here
and now drags it way out here.
The other idea was take benches about this wide,
like that is super wide.
That's probably three feet wide right there.
So you do two seating areas there.
A great big table that pulls out here, creating a nice big area.
Then I just do what I do now when I want to edit.
I got to pull everything out, set it all up, run all my cables,
plug it all in and then set up an office here.
And then when that's done, I tear the office down.
I throw it back and there is benches here at all times.
The thought was was to leave some extra space on that bench here,
like maybe make this one extra long.
The bottom drawer would pull out here, allowing crews to step up on that drawer,
step onto the bench, walk across the bench, have another drawer
that pulls out here.
So when he walks across, he can go up and up.
But that would mean at night,
cruisy might jump because he's like that sometimes.
So there's always that risk that Cruz doesn't go this way
because that's what it would be.
You go down onto the bench, down and then out.
But I think sometimes cruisy might want to just full send it
because he's he's a crazy bugger like that.
Sometimes we're having the stairs would stop that
because he couldn't jump out.
He'd have to go down the stairs.
That's the only way in, the only way out.
But that was the other plan.
So doing this way would give me more seating,
but allow me not to have a desk unless I did the desk,
unless I did a small kitchen here where it's just cooktop sink.
And that's my kitchen.
And turn this whole wall, the rest of this into a desk area.
I'm kind of thinking, I mean, I do like this.
I think this is really functional.
I think this really works.
But I'm also digging the idea of having stairs.
Come on. How cool would that be?
Like I do like that dining table there.
I think it looks really good.
They're just too narrow.
Look how narrow it is.
Like that girl can't even fit on it.
She's moved her laptop off to the side because if she moves over straight,
her elbow would be off the table there.
Her arm would be right up against the window.
It looks too narrow to be comfortable.
Over here is just an office chair with my computer on it.
A nice, fancy, cool little curvy wall there or something like that
to create some design design to the entrance in there.
So it looks really funky.
I don't know, guys.
I'm pretty sure there's going to be plenty more videos like this
where I bounce around some ideas until something sticks.
But I think right now those stairs are pretty high up on my
on my want list.
We'll see, though.
Anyway, guys, thanks for watching this video.
I am glad to see over the last couple of videos that we got
those van speed capsules all said and done.
They look beautiful.
This is one of those
one of those big projects that was super satisfying to see come together
so easily to human times.
I've sat here just staring at this thing,
just visualizing all the stuff that we're going to do to her.
She's going to be pretty badass and beautiful by the time it's all said
and done. All right, y'all, that's all I got.
Me and Cruzy are making home inside of this thing again tonight.
Speaking of that, the only way we can sleep comfortable in here
is to shut those heaters off and open up these damn doors.
I I live in a van full time.
So when you're inside of a building like this, it's just too hot.
You know, like I really enjoy spring, fall and winter for living in a van.
Well, winter here in B.C. anyway, because it's like five degrees at night.
I sleep so good in the cool.
So when we're sleeping in here, we always just open up the doors
and let some heat out.
One major piece of this van build checked off that huge van built list.
Thanks for watching today's video, everyone.
We are taking off and going out and having a little bit of backcountry fun
over the next little bit.
Oh, I forgot to get Daryl to fix my muffler.
I'll message him in the morning and see if he has time to squeeze me in
and band-aid it again. That's all we did last time.
I didn't have time. He didn't have time.
So I'm like, he just band-aided.
So we band-aided it, then we broke it.
So if he does it again, then maybe we'll get another
squeeze out another little adventure before we bust that muffler clamp again.
Yeah, anyway, we're going to bounce out of the shop here again.
I'm stoked that was done.
But we're going to go on and have a little bit of fun
because, dammit, I don't need to be here as often anymore.
So I want to go have a little fun with you guys.
I'm not sure what the weather is going to be like,
but it's not going to be snowy,
which means the backcountry will have full access out here on the island.
Where are we going? Really not too sure.
Are we going tomorrow?
I'd like to, if Daryl can fix that muffler.
Daryl, please, bro.
All right, guys, keep your double V's up, y'all.
And if you guys want to check out any stickers or merch,
it's at VansityVanlife.ca.
Give me that. Give me that thumbs up, love, if you like that.
And if you haven't joined the family yet, dammit, hit the subscribe button, y'all.
All right, guys. Peace out.
