Where we're on the lookout for magicians who can stump Penn and Teller.
Let's see if our next act can pull it off.
I'm Connor McDonald and I'm 20 years old.
Magic and helping people, those are the two running themes in my life.
When I was in middle school, a very close friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer.
So in response, I helped co-found a non-profit that helps other kids just like him with their
pediatric cancer. I knew that I wanted to pursue that farther. Now I'm in college
learning how to start and run non-profits. I guess I found my calling.
I'm also involved in the Magic Castle's junior program. At the Magic Castle,
I've met some amazing people and made some lifelong friendships.
Some of which just keep popping back into my life.
So how do I combine my two passions? By putting on magic shows to raise money for cancer patients.
The trick I'll be doing tonight sprang from one of those shows.
One thing I've learned from working with other magicians is the importance of teamwork.
One head is never as good as two.
Penn and Teller, tonight, teamwork is everything. You'll see.
From his college classes to try and fool Penn and Teller, here's Connor McDonald.
Penn, Teller, you two are magic giants. And I'm just a young guy starting out on
this journey to become a magician. So tonight, I'd like to change the
rules a little bit to make it a bit more fair. Penn, would you come join me on stage?
All the way behind you, Eric? Yes, Penn, very nice to meet you.
Now, Penn, no offense, but you've said yourself that Teller is the real magic savant.
Oh, there's no doubt about that. So tonight, we're going to take him out of
the equation. Teller, you get to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.
And I'm going to try to fool you and only you, Penn.
Okay. All right?
Now, this is one of the oldest magic tricks to date. It's also a trick the two of you have
Pretty ballsy of me to fool you with a trick you already know.
It is, yeah. Cups and ballsy, to be exact.
There you go. There you go.
But it looks like we are missing something. Maybe...
Oh, here it is right there. Oh, there we go.
Well, very simple. One more time. One right here.
And all the way on this right cup. Perfect.
I mean, it wouldn't be the cups and balls without cups and balls, right?
Now, ladies and gentlemen, it's time for the fooling.
If I take this red ball right in the front and I place it right on top of this cup,
and when I cover it and snap my fingers, Penn, it will now jump to the bottom onto the counter.
I imagine this is this is basic stuff. We're going to go ahead and take this
second ball and place it right on top. And when I cover with the other two cups,
once again, it's just going to snap my fingers and jump all the way to the bottom to join it.
One final time, Penn. We have this third and final ball.
Place it right on top. And when I cover it and snap my fingers, Penn,
it will now jump all the way to the bottom. And all three balls have joined together.
Thank you very much. Penn, go ahead and feel these.
Make sure that there are no magnets or anything like that inside of them.
Go ahead and look at these. I can't feel magnets.
Make sure they don't magnetize together. Go ahead and check out these cups to feel them.
Make sure that they're hollow and everything. There's no trap doors or anything inside of
these cups. Don't seem to be.
OK, perfect. Now, Penn, this is where you come in.
You and I are going to make the magic happen together.
Good.
Teller, I bet you'd like to make this a bit more difficult for the two of us, wouldn't you?
Let's make this a bit more challenging, shall we?
Teller, I want you to pick any category of stuff that could fit underneath these cups.
Maybe toys, gemstones, a small animal, even anything at all.
Go ahead and write it down on your notepad.
Let's see what he's got here.
We have fruit.
OK, very good selection.
Penn, we are going to make some fruit appear.
OK.
And you get the final decision in this.
What fruit is going to appear underneath these three cups?
Got to be able to fit under those three cups.
Yeah, so maybe something common, too, something like a first grader would know.
I would say a banana, but obviously a banana wouldn't fit under there.
I would say an orange.
An orange.
All right, Penn, here we go.
We're going to make three oranges appear underneath each one of these cups.
Here we go.
Penn, here we go.
Oranges grow on cheese.
Let's go up and reach, reach, reach, reach, reach, and grab it.
And now gently, very common, and gently place it underneath this left cup.
All right, we have two more.
Here we go.
Oranges grow on trees.
Here, there's a nice one right there.
Grab it and now gently place it underneath the middle cup.
OK, one last time.
I think it might be here.
Let's go together one last time.
Grab it and now gently place it underneath the right cup.
OK, a lot has happened.
Three oranges.
I think pretty, I'm very confident that we can do this together.
Good.
OK, Penn, place your hand right here on the count of three.
We're going to reveal three oranges for Teller.
One, two, three oranges.
Three kumquats.
Would you look at that?
Kumquats are pretty amazing.
Kumquats are pretty amazing, but not as amazing as an orange.
You know, don't worry.
It's not your fault.
Maybe we just overcomplicated things a little bit.
Maybe we just go for, let's just go for one orange underneath the middle cup.
Do you think we can do that?
I think so.
One orange.
Here we go, Penn.
One last time.
Reach, reach, really high.
You're 6'5".
Come on, you can grab the biggest orange on there.
I want to smell it first.
OK, very orangey.
That felt like a good one.
Sure.
And gently underneath the middle cup.
OK, Penn, I want to show Teller tonight the magic that we have done together.
We have one juicy, citrusy, and delicious orange.
Thank you very much.
Watch your step there.
Now, Penn, I want to thank you very much for coming up here and helping me out tonight.
Now, Teller, I want to remind you that this trick is for Penn and for Penn only.
So anything you say or do might just give it away.
That being said, Penn, I know we had a little bit of fun up here,
but I do have one final question to ask you.
And that would be...
You're so brave to do the magic with Penn right there.
Yeah, it was a bit stressful, but I think we got through it nicely.
So when you are performing magic, what are you doing with your free time?
I just finished my spring semester.
So I still have to take my finals, and then I'm on for summer break very soon.
All right.
What are you studying?
I'm studying...
It's very long.
I'll warn you now.
Non-governmental organizations and social change.
So I'm learning how to run nonprofits and stuff like that on a legal and professional level
to then apply it to some magic.
Fantastic.
So can you tell me about your creative process?
I think the biggest part of the creative process is going to my friends and
trying to see if they can work it out with me.
And it's really hard to do things alone.
So teamwork is everything, especially in the creative process.
Yeah.
All right, Connor.
Let's see if Penn can figure out your magic trick.
All right.
Hello, Connor.
It's you and me again.
You know, you don't get to come in here, college boy, and make rules of the game,
just because I didn't go to college.
But we're going to go along with you making the rules.
At least Telva decided to go along with you making the rules
because he didn't help me.
Oh, OK.
Actually, I'm going to say that differently.
He didn't try to help me.
But I know this guy twice as long as you've been alive.
I know this guy.
OK, so I can read him a little bit.
And he had this kind of smug quality that let me know that there were things going on
that he knew, not just because he was smart.
So you see, even though I'm doing it alone,
I am using Teller just by knowledge of him to know that there were things going on.
It was a very, very good routine.
Really, really good.
And from my vantage point, was really, really mystifying.
But when I sit down here and see Teller all smirky, you know, I think Connor,
although he's claiming to be aligned with me, was actually sharing a secret with Teller.
And then that opens up the whole thing.
So I had that.
And then you kick this whole thing down.
And that becomes a really, really good part of the trick.
But here's what I think.
I think that you are our favorite kind of act.
And that is a duo.
And I think you have a partner that works with you on this.
You're out here with your tie and your fancy haircut.
You're getting all the attention.
I think that probably makes your partner a little uncomfortable as he has to work undercover.
So I think that although I really love this, and I really love the way this looks.
And did you build all this yourself?
We did.
Oh, wow.
See, we.
See, I'm also reading you.
So I don't think you fooled me.
Kenshin, what do you think?
Ken and Teller can't perform tonight's final trick yet.
They still have to face a few more magicians.
More magic in a minute.
