From B2 to C1.
You need these connectors for this.
Ready? Let's go!
Are you still stuck in B2 level?
Today you will get connectors from me with which you not only sound native, but also very formal.
And you can use all of these connectors in the exam, both in the oral and in the written part.
And I guarantee you, the examiner will love them.
We start with the first group and that is expressing contrast or alternatives.
Here we have against, in the, let alone because and instead of.
We start with against and against logically expresses a contrast.
It is more or less a synonym for against or, to make it even easier to understand, on the other side.
But of course a little more formal.
Here you could of course also say, on the other side Tom feels comfortable in the country.
That means this is a contrast to Anna.
Here, too, we could say against or on the other side are the additional costs high.
So here we have a contrast from the height of the rent to the height of the additional costs.
Next we have the connector in the and I don't know if you've heard of it before.
We use this connector relatively rarely, if only when writing.
And what exactly does this connector mean now, I can explain to you relatively easily.
In the is a synonym for however and we already know however is a nicer form of but.
That means we now have the standard connector but, a little nicer however and even nicer in the.
Many praise the new system, in the there are still many mistakes.
Please always pay attention to the verb position.
You can also see that I have marked the connectors again in color.
You know I always do it that way.
With red connectors the verb is at the end.
With green connectors in position 1 and with blue connectors, there are only 5 of them, so we don't deal with any of them today, the verb is always in position 2.
So for today, red verb at the end, green verb in position 1.
So if I wanted to say this sentence with but, then I have to change the verb position.
Many love the new system, but there are still many mistakes.
Second example, the idea sounds good, a clear plan is missing in the.
You could also say again, the idea sounds good, but a clear plan is missing.
Next we have but, and but increases a previous negation.
What does that mean exactly?
We have a negation in the main clause and then comes something that is even more negative.
He didn't read the contract, but understood.
And you see that we don't repeat the subject and the verb here at but, and that's totally okay.
So what does that mean?
We have a negation here in the main clause, he didn't read the contract.
And now comes something that is even more negated.
And that he understood it.
So he didn't read it and in no case did he understand it.
Another example.
She hardly has time for e-mails, let alone for a long report.
That means she has so little time that she can't even edit the e-mails and a long report in no case.
And then we have instead, and that of course expresses an alternative, you could also say a plan B.
The meeting is cancelled, instead we send a short note.
Or a very simple example, we don't take the bus, instead we take the train.
So that was the first group, two more groups are coming, but here we take a short break and do a little exercise together.
I'm almost sure that these connectors were all new to you.
And how do you train new things best? By writing a few sentences.
So take a look at these sentences here and please write them down in the comments.
I have tried to make them as interesting as possible for you, so that you also have a lot of ideas on how you can end these sentences.
Number 1 is, I like to work early, on the other hand.
Number 2 is, the app helps me, indeed.
For let alone, I immediately chose three examples for you, because that is guaranteed to be super new.
I have hardly any energy today, let alone.
He has not yet opened the report, let alone.
We are not yet finished with the task, let alone.
It is best to choose one of them here and write a few nice examples in the comments.
And then we have instead, I don't eat outside today, instead ...
All right guys, don't be lazy, do it right now and I'm looking forward to your examples.
As a second group we have cause and effect.
And here we have in consequence, as a result and likewise.
In consequence and as a result have the same meaning and of course they express a consequence.
And which very simple connector, which you all know guaranteed, also expresses a consequence?
Exactly, that's why.
In consequence and as a result are synonyms for therefore.
There were many orders, as a result, sales increased significantly.
Or it rained all week, as a result, many stayed at home.
Then we have likewise and with likewise we express a contrast.
Synonyms for this are nevertheless or nevertheless.
You already know here nevertheless, nevertheless is a little nicer and likewise is even nicer.
The train was late, likewise we reached the appointment on time.
Just as well we could say, nevertheless we reached the appointment on time.
Or the selection was small, likewise we found a suitable gift.
So here again a little writing task for you.
I want to work in Germany, as a result.
He has hardly any money, as a result.
And she practices German three hours a day, likewise.
Yes, it's best to click on pause again, go down to the comments and finish these sentences.
So then we come to the third and last group and here we discuss conditions and coordination.
Here we have provided that, as well as and not only, but also.
Let's start with provided that and you see that this is in brackets here.
So we can use it, but we don't have to, I'll show you in the examples.
Provided that describes a strong condition similar to if, but much stronger and also more formal.
We extend the contract, provided that the quality remains the same.
You could also say, we extend the contract, provided that the quality remains the same.
You see, of course, that the verb position changes a bit.
And likewise we could say the sentence with if.
We extend the contract, if the quality remains the same.
But between if the quality remains the same and provided that the quality remains the same, there are worlds.
Provided that is much, much nicer.
So if you want to write a if sentence in the exam in the future, you'd better write it with provided that.
Second example.
Provided you send the file today, we'll start work tomorrow.
So you see, here we can also start the sentence with provided.
Then we have the double connectors as well as and not only but also.
It is important here that you understand a decisive difference, because they theoretically have more or less the same meaning.
But with both as well as the verb must be the same.
And with not only but also we can use another verb.
When I say another verb, of course, I mean the main clause and the subordinate clause.
Example.
He discussed both the date and the budget plan.
You see, both parts have the verb to discuss.
But if I want to combine two sentences with different verbs, then I don't just have to but also use.
Let's take, for example, we improve the app and we talk to the support.
So here we have the verb improve once and speak once.
And then it goes like this.
We don't just improve the app, but we also talk to the support.
And I couldn't express this sentence with both as well as.
All right, then comes the last task.
We'll meet tomorrow, provided that ...
He works on the project as well as ...
And she doesn't just like to do sports, but ...
And here I ask you to use another verb.
All right, guys, then you learned a few super nice C1 connectors today.
And I also usually gave you very simple synonyms, so that the function of these connectors shouldn't be too difficult.
As always, you can of course also find a download file in the first comment below.
There you can take a look at them all again.
And in the next exam, if you want to write a if sentence, you write it with the precondition that ...
If you want to write a therefore sentence, you write it with in the following ...
And if you want to write a but sentence, you write it with in the following or with however ...
All right, guys, as always, I'm looking forward to your feedback.
Remember, if you liked it, feel free to leave a like and a subscription.
And we'll see you again soon with a new video.
Take care, guys, and bye.
