We interview Manuel Neuer, who tells us about working in the goalkeeping team and his favorite pastime between sessions as they prepare for quarter-final opponents Paris Saint-Germain. Our captain also takes a closer look at the Parisians!
The Club World Cup is fun for all of us. We're looking forward to training and we're looking forward to playing against teams we don't play against every day.
I think we're playing a successful Club World Cup so far, we're really happy to be here and we're having a great time.
I have to say that the location is very well chosen, the training conditions are top-notch, the hotel is good, where we're staying. It couldn't be better.
It's different, of course. You have to pay attention to when you're playing again. You might know that from the English weeks.
If you have games on Saturdays and Wednesdays, you can use the time to go down and then go up again, depending on how the schedule looks.
If you have games where it takes a little longer and we have more time here, then the days are really long.
You have to say that because you're not at home with your family, maybe with friends or the things you do in private.
Then it can take a while, but it hasn't come to the point where a player from Lagerkolle has spoken.
I'm more of an early riser, so I get up at 7 or 7.30 and then we usually have a blood test and then we go to breakfast.
Then you either have a meeting at 8.30 before we go to the pitch, or we take the bus at 9.00 and then you train relatively early.
First you're individually in the tent and prepare yourself, and then you go into goalkeeping training.
There's usually a short discussion where the goalkeeper coach says what's planned today, how much time we have.
Then there's a short warm-up, everyone for themselves.
Then we usually go to the ball and play passes.
Then you start with soft skills, ground training, so to speak.
Then you gradually get used to the heavier exercises.
Then everyone gets their shot.
We're four goalkeepers here and we all have the same exercises to do.
Shortly before the end, it's the most difficult exercises.
You have to increase it a bit, from the warm-up to the point where the team needs the most goals.
We cover as much as possible.
We definitely have an open relationship.
We're very direct, we talk to each other and help each other.
That's crucial, especially in the goalkeeping group.
I think that's how we help each other.
We try to push each other so that each individual gets better and better.
That's nothing new for us, it's something that's been around for many years at FC Bayern.
When you talk to the head coaches and they watch us,
no matter which coach it was in the past,
they always praised us for being so focused,
that we always give everything on the pitch.
That always speaks for us.
I've already made sure that I don't stand on the pitch too much.
But I like the game because of my body size and my ability to react.
I can cover what's on the pitch.
These short steps are important.
In a goalkeeping game, you always have to move around.
The same goes for pickleball.
It's a good balance, where you can have fun together.
The one-on-one situations we have in a goalkeeping game
help you on the net when you play tennis or pickleball.
It's important that you always stand on your front foot,
that you have a good body tension, that you have the stick in front of you
and that you have a firm wrist.
We know that they are the Champions League winners,
that they deservedly won the trophy in Munich.
But it's a new game, on a neutral pitch.
We're looking forward to the stadium in Atlanta.
We know that we have a tough game ahead of us.
But I don't think the balance speaks for PSG.
It's more for us in the last period.
But you can't rely on that.
It's a new team.
We played against Paris once this season.
It was a tough and difficult game for us.
And it all worked out, that we won.
Now we'll see who has the better shape of the day.
No one has an advantage, because it's a neutral pitch.
I think it depends on the details.
Everyone has to be alert, so that no big mistakes can happen.
I think both teams have the players to take advantage of and punish mistakes.
What makes you confident that you will continue?
Our team.
