Fan Bingbing is rumored to have had her Best Actress qualification blackballed,
Tang Yan's brand new CCTV drama was yanked at the last minute, while Zhao Lusi surged up the
charts with an English song and sold out a 340,000-person ticket rush for her concert.
Some are set up, some are silenced, some break through.
Three women, three fates, revealing the real survival rules of China's entertainment industry.
Don't miss the next drop, subscribe and hit the bell.
She hadn't won an award in seven years and was supposed to finally reach the summit as Best
Actress, only to be blacked at the last minute. She, despite a clear comeback in acting and a
primetime CCTV slot ready to go, saw her series pulled the night before broadcast.
And the other one?
Without saying anything, she suddenly started singing, brand new English single,
international producers, instant chart-topper, and then announced a solo concert,
with the entire venue sold out.
Three names, three destinies, Fan Bingbing, Tang Yan, Zhao Lusi.
Some were set up, some were muted, some broke the game.
Coincidentally, in the very same week,
they became the three sharpest mirrors of China's entertainment scene.
Fan Bingbing, after seven years returning to the international stage, her film Mother Earth,
allegedly missed Best Actress by one vote, amid rumors of jury infighting.
Tang Yan, a new CCTV series pulled at the last minute, collateral damage from a leaked audio
scandal. Zhao Lusi, with zero preheating, released an English single that hit number
one on QQ Music in three hours, then announced a November 8 concert in Chengdu,
Remembrance's face, with 340,000 fans crashing the ticket server.
This isn't coincidence. It's a snapshot of an entire industry.
While some remain blacklisted and others choose silence, Zhao Lusi has already learned,
if you can't break the rules, go around them.
Today we'll start with Fan Bingbing's Tokyo mystery, move to Tang Yan's silent pull,
and end with Zhao Lusi's breakout concert.
The three stories link together into a true contemporary scene, under censorship and fear,
how our actress is supposed to live.
Fan Bingbing's Injustice, Who Stole Her Best Actress?
Let's rewind to the Tokyo International Film Festival.
Fan Bingbing went with Mother Earth.
She plays a rural Malaysian woman, farming, learning multiple dialects,
essentially destroying glamour, to go all-in on acting.
The Best Actress award went to two Japanese actresses.
If she simply lost, there'd be nothing to say, competition is competition.
But the oddities came in the leaks before and after the awards.
After the ceremony, an image circulated online claiming to be internal jury voting.
It showed three rounds.
In round one, Springtree's actress Bai Biha was eliminated.
In round two, Fan Bingbing tied with another actress.
In round three, Fan Bingbing ultimately won.
The leak said the press release had even been prepared.
But at the last moment, a Chinese director on the jury, Wen Yan,
allegedly coordinated with two other jurors to change the result.
Why change it?
According to Malaysia's Sin Chiu Daily, Wen Yan's unpublished reason for opposing Fan's win was,
as a Chinese filmmaker, if she awarded an actress who remains blacklisted in mainland film and TV,
she herself would find it hard to survive professionally.
The report even claimed Wen Yan said she couldn't appear on stage with Fan Bingbing,
much less present her the award.
If true, that's chilling.
What does it imply?
That the force of a mainland ban has now chased all the way
into the jury room of an A-list international film festival.
This fear is real.
It means a juror making an artistic judgment might prioritize political safety.
The report also cited netizen claims that Shanghai's performance circle pressured Wen Yan
to ensure the Best Actor award went to Wang Chuanjun, the male lead of Spring Tree,
or else they would pull investment from Wen Yan's future projects.
In the end, Wang Chuanjun did win Best Actor.
Days earlier, Bai Baihe, the female lead of Spring Tree, posted on Weibo,
the fish, forget the trap.
Meaning, after you get the fish, you forget the net.
This spurred mainland chatter, so Best Actor really went to Wang Chuanjun.
Was the female lead Spring Tree set up by the jury?
A film titled After the Heroine, yet the male supporting lead takes Best Actor and
the director wins Best Director, somehow they forgot the woman in the title.
Fan Bingbing's poise.
Fans' response to all this was extremely poised.
She replied to a netizen,
When you encounter unfairness, you must regard it as normal,
when you encounter fairness, consider it a blessing.
Three hours before the ceremony, she had posted,
Seven years, hurdle after hurdle, I've crossed them all.
Life has really trained me into a resilient woman.
Seven years, counting from the 2018 tax storm, it's exactly seven.
She didn't rip off the mask or rant in anger,
but between the lines was release and resilience, I deserved it, but the world isn't fair.
She knows she didn't lose on acting, she lost on identity.
Fan Bingbing's truth, what exactly is Chinese cinema lacking?
If Fan at Tokyo was the victim, then in interviews Fan became the challenger.
In Tokyo she spoke with The Hollywood Reporter.
They asked the sensitive question, do you still want to return to Chinese cinema?
Someone else might have tap-danced, hope so, waiting for chances.
Fan did not.
She said bluntly, it's not about difficulty,
it's that Chinese cinema today lacks diversity of subject matter.
Friends, this line is the weightiest of her comeback.
She wasn't lamenting being blacklisted, she was diagnosing the entire film industry.
She brought data.
She noted that China's October box office was actually lower than the same month in 2014.
She continued, when I used to make arthouse films in China,
there was still a healthy viewing ecosystem,
some could even hit 1 billion renminbi at the box office,
but that environment has nearly disappeared.
What is that environment?
I read it as censorship.
The current ecosystem that must fit the main theme must be politically correct.
Subjects can't be sensitive, characters can't be real.
Directors, writers, actors, all are clamped layer upon layer.
In that context, forget diversity, just being able to finish and release is a blessing.
Is blacklisting a gift?
About her own blacklisting and years without roles, Fan said, I think it was a gift.
It made her pause to absorb and reflect, and understand life more deeply.
She quoted, you have to crouch low to jump high.
She added, falling to the bottom gave me resistance, courage, and a new emotional depth,
anger, helplessness, pain, all become nourishment for an actor.
She wasn't broken by the ban.
She used the time to refine herself from a traffic star into a real actor.
She went to Malaysia to shoot Mother Earth, learning dialects,
learning to farm, working alongside Water Buffalo.
She went to Japan to shoot a new film, 80% in Japanese, learning a new language.
Her actions say, if you won't give me opportunities, I'll create them.
If you won't let me play safe, I'll play real.
Fan chose to speak truth, even if it puts her opposite all the unwritten rules.
Tang Yan's silence, why must the innocent be implicated?
If fan's experience is the cost of speaking truth, Tang Yan's is even more unjust.
She said nothing and did nothing, yet her show vanished overnight.
Love Has No Myth, slated for CCTV8 primetime on November 7,
was suddenly replaced the night before.
No official reason.
But all the clues online point to one thing, Wong Kar-Wai's audio leaks.
What's in those recordings?
This traces back to Tang Yan's hit series Blossoms.
Recently someone claiming to be a Blossoms co-writer released private recordings.
Two bombs exploded in them.
Director insulting actors, allegedly Wong Kar-Wai privately evaluated actors,
including Tang Yan, using unflattering language about character and figure.
Writer assaulted police, the most explosive.
In the audio, Blossoms writer Qin Wen and an assistant boast about hitting police
and getting arrested, then a friend got them out with a single word.
Their tone was bragging, without remorse.
Now connect the dots, who wrote Tang Yan's new series Love Has No Myth, also Qin Wen.
See it?
CCTV, as the party's mouthpiece, could hardly air a drama penned by a now-tainted writer.
Though none of this directly involved Tang Yan herself or that specific series,
she was implicated by association.
The unluckiest victim.
Silence is the only tactic.
What did Tang Yan do?
Nothing.
No statements, no responses, no complaints.
On social, she quietly posted a new ad behind-the-scenes clip.
This is Tang's way, silence.
Fans dug up a decade-old interview, as a public figure you must accept all commentary.
A glass heart solves nothing, better to grow stronger.
Her silence is cool handling.
In an industry ruled by a fear mechanism, she knows that the more you say, the more you air.
If there is controversy, the official stance is, better to delete everything than risk anything.
Her silence is both helplessness and survival wisdom.
Fans said Chinese cinema lacks diversity,
Tang's experience is the most concrete footnote.
Zhao Lusi's breakthrough, if you can't beat it, go around.
So we've covered fans' hard push, Tang's forbearance.
Finally, Zhao Lusi offers a brand new approach.
While Fan and Tang were in storms, what was Zhao doing?
On October 31, with zero promotion, she suddenly dropped an English single, Black Veil Bride.
In 10 minutes, favorites surpassed 10,000, in 3 hours, it topped the QQ music peak chart.
The producer is Brian Lee, who's worked with Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, G-Dragon, Blackpink.
Netizens said, she's aiming global.
This move wasn't impulsive, it was a fierce counterattack after escaping from S-Company hell.
Many don't know how rough it was a year ago.
Zhao tour with her former agency Galaxy Cool Entertainment.
She accused them of verbal humiliation and rough treatment.
Diagnosed with aphasia and depression, she paused work.
Her contract was locked until 2030, with a 400 million RMB penalty.
Everyone thought she was finished.
Yet months later, she miraculously got free, no penalty, successful termination,
then signed with Alibaba-affiliated Tiger Whale Entertainment.
Remembrance a space concert.
Right after the English single blew up, Zhao played her trump card.
On the night of November 3, her team announced by a demi that she would hold a solo concert,
Remembrance a space, on November 8 at Chengdu Gaoxin Sports Center Multifunction Hall.
Her first ever solo show, and her first public stage after getting free.
Ticketing was unprecedented, quiz to qualify plus zero yen reservation,
quizzes opened November 4 at 8pm, fans who passed got entry.
Within under two hours, want to see exceeded 345,000, servers choked.
Reports said those needing travel-slash-lodging packages paid 370-392 yuan,
yet tickets still sold out instantly.
This was not just a show, it was a rebirth ritual.
With music and interaction, Zhao redefined the fan-idol relationship,
no reliance on chart wars, but on content and participation.
Netizens said, she used music to slice through the entertainment winter.
Traffic is leverage.
How did she pull it off?
We don't know all details, but we know her biggest ace, traffic.
At her toughest moment, her series Grant Me Radiance premiered and exploded past 2 billion
views. Her 230 looks in the drama were dubbed a fashion textbook, everything she wore trended,
with overwhelming commercial pull.
This ability to carry a platform is her leverage.
Go around the system, go global.
So back to that English song, she differs from Fan and Tang.
She doesn't talk diversity, nor poke censorship.
She doesn't rely on silence.
She chooses to go around.
With an international team and English lyrics,
she uses her traffic and market to pry open global resources.
No grandstanding in interviews, she lets content and data tell the story,
young Chinese actresses can choose their own direction.
Her way is breakthrough.
Three ways to live, one era's echo.
We went from Fan Bingbing to Tang Yan to Zhao Lucy.
Fan summed them up, Fan is the phoenix reborn from fire,
choosing to speak truth, turning the pain of falling into nourishment.
Tang is the white lotus in a storm, choosing silence, enduring with strength.
Zhao is the girl who opened her own ceiling,
choosing to sing, using the market to bypass boundaries.
Different as they seem, they point to the same reality, in today's China,
creative diversity is disappearing, the fear mechanism is spreading,
and uncertainty blankets everyone.
As they struggle, a new rule from Beijing surfaced,
the well-known cartoonist Rebel Pepper posted on X that beginning November 2025,
Crosstalk, Xiangxing, performers in Beijing must submit all routines for pre-approval
before going on stage, improvisation will be banned,
performances must be read strictly from the script.
Crosstalk has evolved into a new regime of review, approve, read, recite.
This is the era they inhabit.
In it, Fan's injustice, Tang's silence, and Zhao's breakthrough
are not only personal destinies but the truest three echoes of the times.
I'm curious, how do you view these three ways of living?
If you were them, would you choose to speak truth, keep silent, or go around?
