Welcome to my channel intro. Hoping to inspire you to get Out There Learning to explore the stunning variety of rocks and landforms in NZ :-)
Kia ora. My name is Julian Thompson. I am a science communicator and an educator.
Some years ago I was actually a teacher in a high school teaching environmental science and
geology to students. As you may know, New Zealand is on a plate tectonic collision zone. We have two
enormous tectonic plates colliding along a line that goes right through the country.
And so because of this, we have a dazzling variety of very active landscapes and an amazing
geological story to tell from lots of different places and lots of different perspectives.
I partner with many geoscientists around the country who share their research on all aspects
of geology in New Zealand and occasionally I get overseas to places like Antarctica
and the Southern Ocean. So we've got a lot of things going on here in this very busy country
and on this YouTube channel I try to get out to some of those places to share with you what's
going on and to show you how and why things are the way they are in terms of geology and the
landforms that we see. We have impressive mountain ranges with glaciers and huge erosion processes
going on. We have wild coastlines. We have faults and earthquakes happening. We have many volcanoes
as well. We also have a unique fossil record which tells the history of the emergence of this
continent Zealandia. A major sponsor of this channel is Te Herenga Waka, Victoria University
of Wellington, New Zealand. I have worked with many of their geoscientists who are at the forefront
of research into our geohazards, environmental change and quest for resources to transition
into a greener future. If you are interested to look into geography, environmental or earth sciences
as a career, I can fully recommend their courses. Click the link below to have a look. So on behalf
of all the good people who help me make these videos and also those who share their content
with me on this channel, I invite you to explore these videos and of course to like and subscribe
if you want to help boost the channel. Feel free to share them too to help inspire as many people
as possible to get out there learning about the rocks and active landscapes of Aotearoa New Zealand.
And if you're wondering whether I have made a video of a particular place,
there's a link in the description to a map of the video locations.
