Ordering Hong Kong Street Food...In Cantonese🇭🇰🥢

I was lying in bed one fine afternoon when I discovered an Instagram post.
It was all in Chinese and I can't read Chinese but that didn't stop me.
I whipped out my trusty Yooping converter and found out that it was a Hong Kong-style
market happening right here in the UK. So of course I had to get up and go.
So I am in Kingston right now and I'm on my way to the market and I'm so excited because
I'm actually really hungry. I actually want to eat some good food, speak some Cantonese,
practice some Cantonese, try some new Hong Kong food, you know, explore some more culture.
So that is the plan. We are on a mission.
So I just arrived at the market and it wasn't exactly what I was expecting.
I thought it'd be one of those big outdoor markets, you know, loads of stalls,
music, people everywhere. But it was actually indoors and a lot smaller, more intimate.
And I won't lie, I started getting a bit nervous here.
I hadn't spoken Cantonese properly in ages and suddenly it hit me.
Like, oh wow, I'm really about to do this.
Do you want to try this one?
Which one are you trying?
Do you have others like this?
No.
This one.
Okay, I will try it.
Okay, so I'm outside now because it's too noisy inside.
I've tried siu mai when I go to Yum Cha, right?
I know it's a very popular street food.
So I'm wondering how the street food alternative compares to the Yum Cha.
So, let's go.
It's a bit spicy, but it's good.
It's very fishy.
I think the siu mai I've tried before is like fish and pork.
I don't know if that's how it is traditionally.
Somebody let me know.
This one is just fish though.
But yeah, it's good.
So basically, I went up to her and I started speaking Cantonese.
And like, there was just no surprise at all.
Because I'm of course the only non-ethnic Chinese person in there.
But she seemed so chill about it.
So I think what we're going to do next time,
because this is like a snack, right?
And I'm really hungry.
So I'm going to go back in and I'm going to start speaking English first.
And then I'll try.
I'll whip up my Cantonese afterwards.
And see.
Hi.
I was wondering if you could explain
what's in each one.
It's a sautéed beef bun.
This is the bun.
It's sautéed beef.
And this is the ox tongue.
The ox tongue is like this.
And this is the chicken gizzard.
This is the chicken gizzard.
Actually, it's the kidney of the chicken.
So who are you going to introduce?
I'm going to introduce you to the ox tongue.
I'm a little scared.
If you can eat a little spicy,
you can try this.
Is this very famous in Hong Kong?
Sautéed beef is very traditional in Hong Kong.
Ok, ok.
I'm going to try it.
You speak Cantonese very well.
No, I don't.
Thank you.
Ok, so
the second dish
is beef.
I think it's ox tongue.
Actually, I forgot.
So
I didn't realise.
I'm still thinking in Cantonese.
I'm still not in Cantonese mode.
So the final quest
was to look for desserts.
And I found a stall that sold desserts
that I had never seen before.
So I decided to go there.
Do you have any recommendations?
Because I've never tried it.
I've never tried it in the whole country.
Do you want to try this?
It's made of rice flour.
There's lotus seed filling inside.
This is...
This is a Hong Kong-style rice cake.
So this is very authentic, right?
I think it's very authentic.
Ok.
This is the most popular
Hong Kong-style rice cake.
Ok.
So which one
do you like the most?
I like all of them.
I like this one the most.
Can I try this?
Sure.
How much is it?
HK$4.50.
This is called horse hoof cake.
It's very sweet.
Thank you.
Bye bye.
So, final thing.
Horse hoof water chestnut cake.
I'm really excited
to try this because this looks really cool.
And yeah.
To be honest, everything was
quite overwhelmed.
Everything on that whole table was very Hong Kong, wasn't it?
This was that man's favourite.
So let's try this one.
I'm really excited.
I'm a bit scared.
I'm not scared.
Interesting.
It's delicious.
It's a bit weird.
It's not
very sweet.
It's not very, very sweet.
And then, what is this?
Somebody tell me, please.
Is this a chestnut?
Wait, is this what chestnuts look like?
I wouldn't think so.
Okay, guys.
I'm on the way home now
from the market.
It was quite an experience.
What I noticed is that it was very much an event
run by Hong Kongers
for Hong Kongers.
Everyone there was from Hong Kong, Cantonese speaking.
And so,
it was a very different vibe
when I go to Chinatown
or any kind of Hong Kong
or Chinese restaurant in the UK
because those restaurants are obviously expecting foreigners.
But this was different
because it was kind of like a little glimpse
of Hong Kong, like a little mini Hong Kong
in Kingston.
And so, even some of the stalls,
I wanted to speak English at first
and then switch to Cantonese.
But some of the people, for example,
that last stall, I could tell that their English
wasn't very good.
I think when I walked over, they looked at me a bit nervously
because obviously they were like,
can this girl even speak Cantonese?
But I think they were quite relieved
when I started speaking Cantonese.
So, very different to the Chinatown kind of vibe.
It was really wholesome
and nice to see
how they're like a community
and they were advertising their summer courses
and that kind of thing.
So, it was just really nice that if people
are moving from Hong Kong, there are communities here.
So, that was really nice to see
go into the culture
and see everybody really happy and excited
to get their favourite thing people were looking around.
Kids were very excited to see their favourite dessert
that they might miss from home.
It was very nice for me to also try.
It was very yummy.
