And it was, it was that hard
If your kids are in deathbed, you gotta be tough with them
That's hard
I don't think people realize that
But yeah, we made it
I got it
Sorry
Caught me a little emotional
No
Yeah, we made it
We made it
You called me next morning and said I got the call
Everything changed
From that point on, everything changed
New life, new son
So yeah, it was very joyous
When the day came and they said they had a heart for me
I wasn't nervous, I wasn't scared
I was like, let's rock and roll
Let's do this, you know
I think I always knew
Because my grandma had a heart transplant, his mom
So I kind of knew he was in good hands
I think that's what helped
He's not really worried about it
Knowing that the people that were behind it
Were really good at what they did
And they were always really positive
Whenever we would go to see him
So I don't think we were ever really worried
About the whole procedure
More just not having him home and him getting really sick
I was ready and excited
At the same time
So you feel a lot of different emotions
All at the same time
Rolling in
I said bye to my wife and my mom
My mom and my wife were there
And I rolled in
They put me under
And I woke up and it was over
My nightmare started
Because I had a tube down my throat
And that freaked me out more than anything else
Yeah, I couldn't handle that when I woke up
I was not the best patient at that time
Wow, Steven, that's great
They try to get you up as soon as possible
The next day
I was sitting in the chair next to the bed
The following day
I was walking
There, you know, my mom recorded it
It was, you know, getting up out of the chair
Just being...
It's crazy how fast your body
Kind of atrophies and deteriorates
You know, because I was in the ICU in bed
Unable to walk for about three weeks
Before the transplant
And you almost have to
Not learn how to walk again
But you have to teach your muscles
How to work again
It's crazy
I had to use a walker, you know
That was like, you know, elbow height
And I was connected to all this stuff
But then they want you walking around
As much as you can
Everything was swelled up
And, you know, you're in pain
But they want to get you going, you know
And I wanted to get going
Because I wanted to get out of there
Just seeing, like, how he was
Really trying to, like, stay positive
And, like, push through, like him
Trying to walk around more
It just... It, like, warmed my heart to know
That, like, he just came out of, like
A really serious surgery
And he's able to, like, push through
And stay positive about it, like that
Say hi
I'm videoing
Guess who's going home today
Doctor said I could go home today
So I'm just waiting for some paperwork
The vet's, like, 15 minutes down the road
She's going to come and pick me up
And I'm going to get the fuck out of here
Thanks everybody for all the kind words
This whole time
Eighty freaking days
It's been long
It's the hardest thing I've ever done in my life
But I couldn't have done it
Without all you guys
Without my incredible doctors and nurses
So...
Appreciate you all
Hopefully see you at home soon
Love you
Yeah
Eighty days later
This is what it looks like out here
We're waiting
We hear you
Welcome home
Yay
How are you doing?
Are you okay?
Oh my goodness
Look at me
I don't know if it doesn't exactly fall into
What they think you should be doing
But I did have... I had a social worker
And her name was Megan
And she was amazing
And I would send her pictures of, like...
I would be like, well, can I ride my motorcycle again?
And she'd go, yeah
You know, and I'm like, but I don't think
You really understand what I'm asking you
Like, this is what I used to do
And I would show her photos of me jumping something
You know
And she goes, oh, that's amazing
She's like, yeah
You know, and I think that's one thing
About my team that's been great
Is that they've been encouraging all of us
So, yeah, that was one of the goals
Coming out was to at least ride again
I don't know about race, but...
And, you know, six months later
I did, I had a friend that, you know
Has a couple bikes
And I met him at Glen Helen
And we rode
He was racing that day
And I just rode on the vet track
And it...
I'll be honest, it was...
I think it was a little too soon
I was super nervous
And scared to injure myself
So it wasn't...
It wasn't really super fun for me
I think if I would have waited a little longer
I'd probably be riding moto today
When he first got out of the hospital
And he was trying to run with our dog
And he was like...
His legs were like jelly
And he couldn't run very fast
But then, like, later when he ran with them
He ran a lot faster
And, like, he looked a lot more, like, healthy
And it was just...
It warmed my heart
And even when his doctor came
For his heart transplant anniversary party
He even said to himself, like,
You look pretty healthy
I'm glad to see that
And I'm like, my dad
What I wanted to do was jujitsu
And I started doing that after my transplant
And just being that close to people
With a weakened immune system
Was too much for me, I think
But it was like, you know
I'm just checking off bucket list things
That I wanted to try
You know, that I never did before
So my friend Wayne
He...
You know, him and I were talking a lot
While I was in the hospital
During the whole first year
He was...
He was talking to me about
About riding bikes
Riding mountain bikes
He still rides moto
But he started...
He started riding e-bikes
He had an electric mountain bike
And he was like, dude, you gotta try it
He was like, let's go ride
You can ride one of my bikes
You don't have to buy one yet
You could try it out
And see how...
See if you like it
And me being the impatient person that I am
I'm like...
I'm like, yeah, yeah, we'll do that
But in the meantime
I was talking to somebody
About buying a bike
And I just went and got one
And I...I got one
I...I went out to ride with a friend
And my first ride
Even on an e-bike
You know, I...I...
You know
And that to me is...
It shows me how far I've come
Because I was struggling in boost
On an e-bike
Climbing up this hill more than once
I did the first lap
And then my buddy still wanted to keep going
And...and...
And I was like, I'll wait for you down here
I can't...I can't do another one
You know
But I was hooked
I...I've known Steve since I started riding
I was like, oh, dude, this dude's heart's bad
However, then he's like, nah, my heart's...
I got a new heart
It's just...
Gotta take it easy
The way they deal with things is they just...
You know, bust your balls
So they would...they would all the time
And Wayne would check on me here and there
And say, you know, you're doing all right
And things like that
I think they were cautious at first
But...but...
I mean, we all are on, like, the same page
As far as, like, hey, we're gonna do
What we wanna do
And, you know, what happens, happens
And I think we're...we're all very aware of that
He says he can't do it
We're not gonna...I mean, we will...
We'll push to a certain extent
And then we'll know when someone says
Nah, I'm not gonna do it
We'll...we'll let it go
I was scared, like
What if the dude, like, uh...
Falls out
But I guess when we're riding, you know
If...if he's good to ride, you know
We just don't think
Oh, yeah, you know, he'll...he'll let you know
Yeah, and he'll...
We...we've written, uh, analog in
Um...it sucked
But we did it
And he let me know he was tired
And I think that's the biggest thing
Is that...that someone with...
That went through surgery
Doesn't mean you...you're...you're complacent
And you need to stay at home all the time
As long as the doctor okays you to go
You know, it's awesome that...
That he's showing that
But if Steve's still doing it
Then, you know, shit
Why am I gonna slow down here also
Yeah, very inspiring
Yeah
He's a very Disney movie like term
Disney movie, yes
That's basically
I had a bunch of moto buddies
That...that rode
And some friends
Some old high school friends
That I ran into
Through the mountain bike community
And...and we reconnected
And we started riding
And we were just riding all the time
And...and I was getting a lot better
And...and that itch
Just came to me
To where I was like, well
I wanna take it to the next level
Let's...I wanna...
I wanna go do a downhill race
Had my first race
A year ago this week, I think
It was my first one that I ever did
It was at South Ridge
And...and I was the only guy in my class
You know, and...and so I...
So I got a first place medal
And got to bring my bike up there
And pose for everybody
And...and it was...it was...
It was fun, you know
I just haven't stopped since then
Throughout South Ridge racing
Cat 3, baby, downhill
30 to 39 age group
And I think that day I was the only one
And then some guy pulls up behind me
And I ask him if he's in my category
And yeah, that's it
I said we're racing together
And from then I invited him to our pit
And of course he told us his story
We're like we don't care
We just wanna ride
I'm more aware of everything
As far as what my heart's doing
And that just, I think
Is something that broke in my brain
That will never go away
Being sick all those times
You know, you start to worry about
Your heart
And you think about it
More than a normal person
You know, most people
Just think their heart is there to work
And it's just gonna work
And you don't really have to worry about it
But me, for, you know
Years and years I spent
Wondering if my heart was just gonna stop
And I was gonna drop dead one day
So that doesn't really go away
So when I do get my heart rate up real high
I have a momentary, like
Split second where I worry about it
But then I'm like
What's the worst that could happen
You know, I've experienced the worst
That could happen, so
And I made it, so
Just keep going
He chose the gnarliest, like, subcategory
Of mountain biking to do, for sure
But I think that just comes with, like, you know
It comes with it, obviously
It's part of the sport
I think he knows that, too
And, you know
I think in the back of his mind
He knows you can only push yourself back
Before you, like, kind of want to take that next step
And I think that's what mountain biking is
Like, always progressing
He knows, like, not to, you know
Push it too far
And respect, like, the, you know, what he has
'Cause obviously not everyone gets a second chance at that
He's able to do what he wants to now
And, like, what he's passionate about
And, like, doing all this
Just kind of
It just really amazes me
How, like, he can
He can do so much now
And, like, he couldn't do that before
He's just a totally different man
He's living the life
That he couldn't
Now he can
So it's just really
It's so wonderful
Just to see him enjoying life now
He doesn't have to worry about it
He would worry so much about
I'm not gonna make it
You know, he's got young kids
And now, now look at him
He's doing mountain bike races
Look at that little
I think the effect I have on people
Who are waiting on the list
Is more positive
Because they see what's possible
That you can do normal things
I mean, I live a pretty damn normal life
Besides all the pills I take, you know
And, you know, having to go
Get poked and prodded sometimes, you know
It's a pretty normal life
And, like I said, it's important for me
Not to minimize anybody else
And the way they choose to live their life after
I respect it
Whatever they want to do
But I just want to show people what's possible
I'm really glad that he is just able to do
What he wants to do
And I think that's what he's doing
He's just doing his best at what he loves
And he's got the opportunity to do that
That he would not have had without an organ donor
So I think, you know, I hope that people
Donate their organs
Because you can't take them with you
And they can, you know, really save somebody's life
I'm sorry
And thank you
You know
It's unfortunate
And it's not lost on me
That somebody had to pass away in order for me to live
It's an extremely tough situation
But I would just say that
Their son or daughter's decision to become an organ donor
Was the best thing that ever happened to me
It allowed me to watch my kids become adults
It allowed me to do things that I had always wanted to do
That I never would have had a chance to do otherwise
And there's no greater gift than
The gift of life that somebody could give
And your son, daughter
Husband, sister, brother
Is the one that gave that to me
And it was incredibly selfless
And I'm forever grateful
