Welcome to Math with Mr. J.
In this video, I'm going to cover how to
multiply a four-digit number by a
two-digit number. We'll go through an
example together and then I'll give you
a practice problem that you can try on
your own. Let's jump into our example
where we have 5,892*
63. Now, the first thing that we're
going to do here is set this up. So,
we're going to line up the places. So,
5,982
[Music]
times
63.
So, you can see that we have the ones
place lined up, the two and the three,
then the 10's place lined up, the eight
and the six, and then the four-digit
number on top has a nine in the hundreds
and a five in the thousands. Now that
we're lined up, we're ready to multiply.
And really what we're going to be doing
here is 5,982
* 3 and then 5,982
* 60. And I'm saying 60 because that 6
is in the 10's place. It has a value of
60. Then we add those results for our
final answer. Now we'll start with the
three in the ones place and do 3 * 2.
That gives us 6. Then we do 3 * 8 which
is 24. So we write our four and carry
the two. Now we do 3 * 9 which is 27
plus that 2
is 29. So write the nine and carry the
two. And next we do 3 * 5 which is 15.
plus that two is 17. So we write our
seven. And then there aren't any more
places to the left. So we bring that one
straight down. So 5,982
* 3 gives us 17,946.
And now we are done with this three,
this two, and this two. And I'm crossing
those numbers off since we are done with
them. That way we don't confuse these
numbers with any other numbers as we
continue working through this problem.
It helps us stay organized. Now we move
over to the six in the 10's place which
has a value of 60. So we need a zero
right here before we start multiplying.
Now that we have that zero, we can
multiply and we'll start with 6 * 2.
That gives us 12. So we write our two
carry the 1. Now we have 6 * 8 which is
48 + 1 is 49. Write the 9, carry the
four. Now we have 6 * 9 which is 54 + 4
is 58. Write the 8, carry the five. And
now we have 6 * 5 which is 30 plus that
five is 35. So we write our five there.
And then there aren't any more places to
the left. So we bring that three
straight down. So 5,982
* 60 gives us 358,920.
And now we add these for our final
answer. We'll start with the ones place.
6 + 0 is 6. 4 + 2 is 6. 9 + 9 is 18.
Carry the 1. 1 + 7 is 8 + 8 is 16.
Carry the 1. And then we have 1 + 1 is 2
+ 5 is 7. And then we end with a three
in the 100,000's place. We can put our
comma in. And this is our final answer.
376,866.
So there's our example problem. Now it's
time for you to try a practice problem
on your own. So have paper and a pencil
ready. So here is your practice problem.
I'll give you 3 minutes and then we will
go over the answer. Feel free to pause
if you need more time or jump ahead to
the answer whenever you are ready. Go
ahead and start.

Okay, so that was 3 minutes. Let's go
over the answer. So, here is our answer.
8,527
* 49 equals 417,823.
So, there you have it. There's how to
multiply a four-digit number by a
two-digit number. I hope that helped.
Thanks so much for watching.
Until next time, peace.
