The Tale of the Old Woman Back
then people were better than today
Then even God came to our Earth accompanied by Saint Peter as an inseparable traveling companion
Among the old peasants in ragged clothes one might have thought they were beggars
In the depths of the world unknown to anyone rewarding each one according to their deeds
At that time lived a poor old man He was alone All his family had died
She gives each of the poor a coat shoes or some money for expenses
For they knew him to be a hardworking thrifty and honest man
In the fall when the village was making sausages the old man would get even more good things
As the years passed the old man felt increasingly weak and old A constant thought tormented him
I have eaten at many foreign restaurants in my life But me who has no one who will make a memorial for me when I die
And with the little money he had he also managed to buy a bit of soul for himself
The old man invited everyone to dinner
We have waited a long time but no one has stepped across the threshold Everyone in the village was saying
The old man's pig has nothing to eat either Where else are we supposed to go
Why should we help him take what he has And no one came to the old man's feast
Very sad and not understanding such a thing the old man took everything he had prepared sausages pastries bread candles and spread the table at the crossroads of the roads on the fields and wherever he knew people passed
Only once did a beggar get to taste his porridge
Where can I find something to eat Lord The Holy Peter of God
They are limited We can find a place the Lord replied Here the village is not far
As they descended a hill Saint Peter saw that they were indeed approaching the gate of a village Upon arriving there what a great miracle
On both sides of the road several large platters of stuffed cabbage and rice from which warm steam rose Above them round loaves beautifully browned with candles lit in the centers
The old man had not forgotten to bring food here Without asking anything else Saint Peter began to eat heartily
God did the same after first blessing the food You have always taken care of us Lord Praise be to Your name
Saint Peter bows in reverence after satisfying his hunger placing the ring and candle in his pocket
Thanks be to the good-hearted Christian who though poor brought here everything that we are now enjoying
And illuminated by the words of God Saint Peter understood the entire story of the feast
Lord it is not right that such a beautiful deed should go unrewarded added Saint Peter
Come on Petre Don't worry He reprimanded him gently
When Saint Peter and God arose and continued on in the place of the beggars with food
ere as if by magic appeared some large green leafy crowns spread out on the ground and raised in the middle
At the top of swaying branches yellow flowers like tiny torches
And ever since every spring the thistle has been in our way everywhere
At road intersections by the roadside on hilltops in forest clearings
He had brought with great effort food and lit candles to the good old man's heart
