The sun had just begun to crest over the
jagged peaks when Leo Anderson and Mia
Williams began their ascent, unaware
that by midday their climb would turn
into the most haunting experience of
their lives. At 10:15 a.m., halfway up a
cliff that jutted into the clouds, Leo
pressed his back to the cold limestone,
catching his breath. Below them
stretched a dizzying drop above the
endless climb. Mia, a few meters ahead,
froze suddenly. "Leo, do you see that?"
she said, her voice sharp with
disbelief. Leo followed her gaze in his
stomach tight. Embedded in the rock
face, several hundred feet up, was what
looked unmistakably like a window.
Sunlight glinted off its glass, throwing
fractured beams across the mountain
wall. "That can't be real," Leo
muttered, squinting. But the closer they
climbed, the more undeniable it became.
There was a window, and beside it, a
door and a sheet of corrugated tin
forming a roof half swallowed by the
cliffside itself. A house built into the
mountain. "How is that even possible?"
Mia whispered. There was no path, no
support, no visible foundation, just the
sheer wall in this forgotten fragment of
civilization. To reach it, they had to
cross a narrow ledge no wider than the
edge of a curb. Wind howled through the
gorge below as they clipped in their
safety ropes. "One at a time," Mia said,
but Leo shook his head. "We go together.
If one slips, the other steadies, every
step made the cliff groan beneath their
boots. The air grew colder, thinner.
Then a metallic clang echoed from inside
the mysterious structure, sharp, hollow,
and close. Mia froze midstep. Did you
hear that? Leo nodded. The sound rang
out again like a chain striking metal.
He glanced at Mia and without a word
they quickened their pace. The door was
heavy and weathered but strangely
intact. Leo touched the handle. It was
warm that more than anything sent a
chill through him. No rot, no frost
damage, he murmured. Someone's been
maintaining this. Mia pressed her ear
against the wood. Nothing. No breathing.
No movement. Just a faint moan of wind
outside. With a steadying breath, Leo
twisted the handle and pushed. The door
opened with a low groan, revealing not a
room, but a tunnel. A narrow handcarved
passage leading deeper into the heart of
the mountain. This doesn't make sense,
Mia whispered. Where are the windows?
The walls. Leo swept his flashlight beam
across the stone. The windows outside
were fake mere glass panels sealed over
solid rock. Whoever built this had
designed it to deceive. Then came the
sound again that hollow clang louder
this time, echoing from deep within the
tunnel. Mia's pulse raced. Something's
down there, she said. Only one way to
find out, Leo replied, his voice tense
but resolute. They stepped into the
darkness. The air grew colder still,
thick with the scent of rust and old
dust. The tunnel descended at an angle,
and their boots crunched against grit
and stone fragments. Then, behind them,
the wind roared. The heavy wooden door
slammed shut hard. They both spun
around. Leo lunged for the handle, but
it wouldn't budge. He pushed with his
shoulder, then both hands. "It's stuck,"
he growled. "Or locked," Mia added
quietly. For a long moment, they stood
frozen in the flickering light of Leo's
headlamp. Realizing they were trapped
inside a place that shouldn't exist.
Then forwards the only way, Leo said
finally. At the tunnel's end, the space
widened into a small room carved
directly from the rock. Dustcovered
furniture lay scattered. A table, two
chairs, a cracked lantern still faintly
glowing. On the stone wall, old
photographs were pinned in neat rows.
Every face in them had been violently
scratched out except one. A man in a
blue hat. Mia's breath caught. Leo, look
at this. And then from somewhere above
them came the sound of slow deliberate
footsteps. The footsteps above them were
slow and deliberate impossible because
there was no second floor. Leo and Mia
froze, staring at the stone ceiling as
the sound echoed again. Without
hesitating, Leo dragged the table under
a small iron hatch and climbed up. The
metal ring screeched as he pulled it
open, releasing a blast of cold, stale
air. Leo, don't. Mia whispered, but he
had already disappeared inside. After a
tense moment, his head reappeared. Mia,
you need to see this. She climbed up
after him and found herself in a narrow
corridor carved deep inside the
mountain. At the far end was a wooden
door trembling with a low constant roar
behind it. Leo opened it slowly. A blast
of sound hit them a hidden cavern lit by
blue light with a massive waterfall
crashing into a crystal pool below. It
was breathtaking and completely
impossible. Then a voice echoed. Over
here. Standing by the pool was the man
from the scratched photographs the only
face left untouched. My name is Liam, he
said calmly. I've been living here for 7
years. He explained everything. A
climbing accident, a stranded team, and
a decision to stay behind when no rescue
came. The strange housefront had already
existed, built by someone long forgone.
"This place saved me," Liam said.
"Please don't reveal it. People would
destroy it." He pointed to a spiral
stone path beside the waterfall. "It
leads out. You'll be safe." Before
leaving, Leo and Mia shared a quiet meal
with him. When they finally stepped into
daylight above the ridge, Mia whispered,
"We can't tell anyone, can we?" "No,"
Leo said. Some secrets deserve to stay
hidden.
