Not all roads are motorhome-friendly or suitable for larger vehicles — and finding out too late can be a stressful (and expensive!) mistake. In this video, I’ll show you a quick hack to tell if a road is suitable for your motorhome or RV before you drive it — no need to rely on your untrustworthy sat nav! If you're heading into the mountains of Europe, these motorhome driving tips will help you plan better, stay safe, and avoid getting stuck!
How do you know if a road is suitable for your motorhome? How do you know when you're planning
the route and you want to go say up into the mountains and you've got these wiggly winding
roads that you're looking at on your map, how do you know if you can actually get your motorhome
or your campervan but particularly your six and a half seven even eight meter motorhome up these
roads? Well my friend I am here today to share with you my number one tip for knowing if a road
is suitable or not for your vehicle. If we've not met before hi my name is Kat I run the Motorhome
and Vanlife channel Wandering Bird and I'm here for the motorhome and campervan owners who want
to get a bit more adventurous and go off the main road with their motorhomes but are a little bit
scared of getting stuck until today. So let's dive in. So here we go this is Park for Night and this
is how I know whether roads are suitable or not for motorhomes particularly big motorhomes like
mine anything over sort of six and a half meters. So I'm going to be leaving the first
Wandering Motorhome Club Germany trip in or near Nischfenstein and I want to head down across the
border into Austria possibly even into the Dolomites and the Tyrol region. I'm not entirely sure yet but
I definitely want to do some of these smaller roads as much as I can rather than the big main
motorways. So this is how I do it. Basically if you go to the area that you want to explore
and if you take off on Park for Night and you just do Surrounded by Nature,
Parking Lots, Free Motorhome Areas, Picnic Areas, those ones for now and let's just see
what we find and then what we're going to do is obviously if they've got a paid motorhome area you
know that that road is suitable. You look at the pictures, look at the vehicles that are in the
pictures, I mean a motorhome can obviously easily get that one. But so that's further sort of on
this little road but what if we wanted to come to one of the big passes? Where was it?
Kitzbuhel. So I want to go up to Kitzbuhel and I want to go into this sort of area here.
So I don't know, I mean obviously these yellow roads are fairly good but you know what if I
wanted to come up here? So click on that and then obviously this one here, teeny tiny little camper
van. Look at the reviews and it says very steep, you need a good car van, not suitable for large
camper. So I know that I'm not going to be planning a trip up to this little bit here but
if I stay on this sort of main road around Kitzbuhel, there we go, that's a big motorhome,
much bigger than mine. So if they can get there I can get there and this is literally what I do
when I'm trying to assess which parts of the road or which roads I can go down. I look to see
what the parking stops are like and then I look to see if they might be suitable for motorhomes.
So this one here has got two vans in it but it is quite tarmac, it doesn't mean motorhome can't
get there, that's just the first picture. So what I would do then is translate it, steeply sloping
parking lot, some cars pass at midnight and it doesn't say anything about large campers,
steep and narrow climb more for vans and that's the kind of information I'm looking for.
So I know that that one isn't for me. Now when I find one, let's move down a little bit,
in fact let's go back into the Dolomites because I love the Dolomites. Yeah all of these passes
here are amazing, so let's have a look at this one here, there we go, this is a really good example.
Now this here, that is a proper proper wiggly road, like you would be really not sure if a
motorhome could get up there and then you get a little bit further up and it gets even worse
and you're like I don't know if that road is suitable or not for a motorhome. But you've
clicked on this first one here and you can very clearly see that there are a couple of motorhomes
there and it's got some really good reviews, tons of space, incredible views, toilet at the table,
car clean, gondola takes you up the mountain in 12 minutes and then let's just see a sign that
everything is closed, even the toilet is closed. Okay so you probably can't stay the night there
but it does show you that the road is suitable for motorhomes so I would probably favourite that one
just so that I know I can get up that road and even if you're not going to stay at these places
does mean that you can navigate that fine. Let's just try and find one more in a different area
that's really really really wiggly, really quite intimidating, you'd be like I don't know if I can
get up there so let's just have a look at pictures, doesn't show any vehicles that's really
unhelpful. Okay that there is an amazing view, look at that that's beautiful, lots of motorhomes in
there, motorhome parking is permitted, definitely going to add that one to my list. I hope you found
that useful, if you do a thumbs up is always really appreciated and if you want to see more
