I got a new camera guys I just bought a new camera and when I got home and so
last time I dropped my camera in the pond and it did start working again when I got
home but very sporadically it would just sort of turn on and off whenever it felt like it
and not when I wanted it to which is not how I want a camera to behave you know but yeah
I got it home and dried it off properly like I actually spent time drying it off properly
and yeah it's just it's no more so I just quickly ordered a new one it arrived the next
day which is good which means I can continue the vlogs I wasn't sure if I'd even be able
to get here again this week for a Friday vlog but here I am I've made it it's also
a gorgeous mild day with lots of blue skies and sun as it was yesterday unfortunately I
couldn't get here yesterday because I had nothing to film on but it's going to be the
same today and then next week going into next week but going into next week we are looking
at a real dip in temperature and snow so it's going to get very cold very quickly which means
I need to protect those potatoes I need to do some weeding today which will be harder to do
when it gets really cold and the ground gets frosted over so weeding protecting potatoes
and also I really want to sort out that new compost bin that I've got bought some staples
got some staples with me so we can staple on some ground sheet and then hopefully start I don't
know like putting compost into it and stuff so anyway lots to get on with today but I think the
very first thing we're going to do is go and feed the bird and not drop my camera in the pond
hopefully fingers crossed we do not put the camera in the pond
that's the parakeets we can hear that's not an einstein that's not an einstein robin
I think actually at this time of year what the birds need is more fatty foods I think these are
quite fatty these sort of worms I think they are quite good for them but I think what they need is
like lard or like fat balls and I do have some at home I just keep forgetting to bring into the plot
I use them in my home garden but I need to bring them here for einstein because at this time of
year birds get really hungry and they need to like really fatten up for the winter time so
I will bring some of those with me next time I promise guys do not let me forget
especially as it's getting really cold next week I'm a little bit worried about einstein
can I hear him I can hear him here what happens if he's not here straight away he hears my voice
and then eventually he comes and sees the food
if I immediately break this camera I will cry today that's it no lie come on einstein
you can hear him but can't see him right the fleece that I've put over these main crop potatoes
is a maris I can't remember what they are are they maris pipers that I planted I think they're
maris piper they're a main crop variety anyway and the the fleece that I've put over them to
protect them from the frost and the colder weather has failed keeps falling off so I need
to really protect it today because I think they're starting to get frost damage my first thought was
oh gosh is that blight the thing is with blight blight normally appears on the stems as well and
I don't have any of it on the stems so for that reason I think it's frost damage but it also could
be the start of blight I'm not an expert I just have a feeling this is frost this is where the
cold has got to the plants there's einstein
tricky thing about protecting crops from frost especially at this time of year when frost is
a big problem is that if your fleece touches the plant the plant will get frost and my fleece is
touching the plants because the plants have got so bleeding big and I can't keep the fleece up
and it's been so windy that the fleece keeps falling into the plants like that so it's going
to be a bit useless I mean hoping that it will sort of give some kind of protection but the idea
is to not let the fleece touch the leaves and it makes sense doesn't it it's common sense if the
fleece touches the leaves the whole thing will freeze your leaves underneath that are touching
it will freeze as well along with it so it sort of makes sense but do you mind but yeah it's quite
tricky to do or I find it quite tricky to do just want to keep them alive a little bit longer you
know just until a bit closer to Christmas see I reckon I can keep them alive just a bit longer
until Christmas time I really do that might be my toxic trait this year thinking I can keep things
alive through the frost but you know what we're going to give it a go I mean they are doing so
well they're getting so big though I have learned from experience that bigger potato plants don't
always correlate to bigger potatoes actually some of the smaller plants with hardly any foliage I've
got the biggest potatoes from so maybe that's just where the energy goes I don't know I don't know
how it works I don't know the ins and outs of the mysteries of plants I just whack them in the
ground and hope that they do something very nice and peaceful today isn't it lovely and peaceful
also I've seen so many bees coming in and out of my nasturtiums which are all still flowering how
nice is that at this time of year November November and we've got bees pollinating nasturtiums
I need to get my staple gun my staple gun is in the shed the shed is full of spiders I have not
set foot in the shed for about three months would anybody like to come over and get my staple gun
out my shed for me I'd very much appreciate it
I've located my staple gun there is the staple gun what else is on this table we don't know
I don't know what's lurking under there the last time that I came in the shed the last time I came
you're further in the shed than I would even dare to be I've just reached over and put you there
you're on your own guys you're on your own the last time I came in here a mouse
ran up the back my back underneath my coat and came up through my shoulder and then jumped off me
that's the last time I was in here so you can understand why the memories of this shed have
been tainted a little bit um it came out of nowhere it just ran up my back it was horrendous so I'm
going to try really hard just to get that staple gun we got it let's get out of here I just don't
think I need a shed I'm actually seriously considering just getting rid of this and maybe
putting like a storage unit here instead or something I don't know I don't use it it becomes
a mess you know it becomes a mess every year this is just stupid it just feels like a huge waste of
space on my allotment site and I'm just not utilizing it at all you know I'm not it's
pointless it's stupid so I might have to seriously consider getting rid of the shed
just having some kind of storage thing for tools and that's it
okay just have to remember how to use this thing
uh um spider on that lovely oh I know
oh I think these might be the wrong staples
oh they're going there oh no they don't they're going there are they the wrong staples then
I didn't know there were different sized staples
why would they make why wouldn't they just make a universal size staple
wait I'm so confused how does this
I think it's because they're supposed to go in there but they don't fit I think they don't fit
I think the answer is they don't fit so I bought the wrong bloody staples that's so annoying ah
it says eight millimeters and I've got six millimeters so those are the wrong staples
right okay right that's annoying because a staple gun is always a really good idea
for every job but not today not if you've got the wrong staples it seems
then it's not a good idea it's a bad idea
I'll cut all this to size I think it won't be a wasted day
all I've got to do then is just tack it on with some staples you know
right so it turns out I've got all the things I need for it except staples that's all I need
but the idea will be to line it so I've got another bit of this ground sheet to go around
that bit to line it and then I've got this garden mesh and I was thinking I could sort of
weave it over the top so it's like a lid and then sieve all of my compost into it and then
remove the lid and get the compost at the end that's sort of the rough plan
it's the final stage of compost making is the bit that I seem to be struggling with I have
I've never reached the end basically there is no end in my eyes I just keep composting I keep
throwing stuff in it chopping it down turning it moving it all the rest of it never had any
compost so I feel like by now because it's been a year and a half I should have had some compost
that's the compost plan at least there is a plan you know at least there is a plan
okay I don't quite know how this happened but my wheels got completely stuck
there we are okay
so
I've noticed down here this is where I planted in my broad beans a lot of them are germinated
but some of them have been dug up and eaten which is actually I have to admit this is the first time
this has ever happened to me regarding my broad beans and people always say people always say
the mouse or the rat or whatever will come and dig them up and eat them and it never happens to me
and this is the first ever year it's happened but having said that a lot of them have germinated
which means that they should be safe now from the rats and mice I think looking at them
I think there's enough of them left for me to not have to worry about resewing more
I think I over sewed anyway because I sewed them too close together I always do that always so
more than you need I think there's enough and for there to be enough broad beans here so
yeah I'm really happy they've germinated that is excellent news so I've got broad beans on the go
right I was planning on thinning these out today I think it's radishes and spring onions I was
going to thin them all out but you know what I've changed my mind yeah I sort of feel like I'm having
a bit of a run of bad luck at the moment things just seem to be going wrong it's nothing too bad
but it's just enough to make me think I need to be a bit cautious so I was going to thin them out
but knowing my luck at the moment what happened is I'll thin them out and then a slug will come
and just eat them all and I'll be like why did I thin them out you know so I just I'm going to
leave them I think they'll be okay but everything else in here seems to be growing really well I'm
so sad that this is the last sunny day I wish I had more to do do you know what I mean because
I just feel like with the weather changing next week I just don't know how much I'm going to get
done and I don't know what the and I don't know what the plot's going to look like next week
because when the frost comes and especially if it snows all those nasturtiums are gone all that
cosmos is gone you know it's sort of it's going to completely change it so it'll be interesting
to see what happens but I'm going to try and soak it all in I think soak it all in I might
actually go and pick all that cosmos should we do that quickly before we go let's do that
I'm really going to miss all these beautiful nasturtium flowers they really brighten up the
plot
yeah I really feel like this could be the end of the cosmos today so I've been really brutal with
the way I've cut them I've really cut them with loads of buds on because I don't think these are
going to get a chance to flower now so they're mine they're mine for my kitchen for a few days
and I think the nasturtiums are going to have to say goodbye to them I have a feeling next time I
come down they're just going to be wilting and dying hey ho anyway I hope you've enjoyed Friday's
edition of the allotment diaries I'm going to be back again on Sunday morning at 9am
