Извините. Извините. Извините is a polite and formal way to get someone's attention.
It is impersonal and can be used to get attention of any person or people whose names you don't know.
It is usually followed by a request or a question.
There is a formal and informal way to say this expression, so a formal one is
and informal is just
You can use informal извини in situations when you already know a person.
These two expressions can be used separately, so you can just say извините or извини,
or you can also add a pronoun меня, which means me.
So, for example, извините меня, excuse me.
The same, excuse me, but in informal situations.
Another variation is to add a polite word пожалуйста, пожалуйста, please.
So, for example, извините, пожалуйста, or извини, пожалуйста, in informal situations.
As in previous example, you can add a pronoun меня, so it will be
извините меня, пожалуйста, or извини меня, пожалуйста.
Простите is another polite and formal way to get someone's attention.
It has a stronger meaning and shows that one is really sorry to bother another person.
Notice that a word простите is also used when one feels sorry about something already done,
and he or she wants to apologize for that.
Here is an example of two ways to say this expression.
A formal one
and informal
Though you can also skip a word пожалуйста or меня in these examples.
Можно вас is a polite and formal way to get someone's attention.
It can be used either separately or be followed after another expression
like извините, простите, and some gender or job-specific words.
When using this expression, you can also add words like
секунду, which means a second, and минуту, a minute.
So, for example,
Do you have a second?
Do you have a minute?
Do you have a quick minute?
is a polite and informal way to get attention of somebody you know.
It can be used either separately or be followed after another expression like
извини, прости, or a name.
If you are not really familiar with Russian mentality
and your Russian language skills are not that strong,
I would highly recommend you to use one of these expressions to get someone's attention.
They are impersonal, polite, and you can use them with any strangers, service workers, and so on.
I will now also show you some expressions that are based on gender and age,
and I'm sure that you will be surprised to see
how many of these expressions we use in our everyday life.
девушка
young lady is the most common way to address a woman whose name you don't know.
For example, a shop assistant, waitress, female bypasser, and so on.
It is quite a tricky word because there is no general rule to say
until what age you can call a woman девушка.
While some middle-aged women would take this word as a compliment,
others might consider it as a sarcasm.
Be extra careful with this word because, again,
nobody knows when it is okay to call a woman женщина.
This word has rather a negative nature as it refers to the age
and implies that a woman doesn't look young anymore.
Many women can take a word женщина addressed to them as the worst offense.
Just avoid using the word женщина to address to women of any age as it sounds
somewhat rude and you can never know what a Russian woman can do or tell you in revenge.
This word has two meanings, an old lady and a grandmother.
The word бабушка can be used to address an old lady approximately starting from the age of 70.
There are other different forms of this word to address to old ladies.
There are many cute and affectionate ways to address old ladies in Russian.
For example, бабуля, бабуль, бабуська, бабулька and старушка.
Just don't address any of these words to women younger than 70 years old.
They will not find it cute and will take it as an offense.
A word девочка can be addressed to girls younger 16 years old.

For example, a shop assistant, a waiter, mail bypasser and so on.
Just as the word девушка, young lady,
молодой человек is a gender-based form to address to a young man.
Other variations of молодой человек are парень and паренёк.
Мужчина can be addressed to a middle-aged man.
Unlike women, men are usually not offended by this age-exposing word.
However, any middle-aged man would take it as a compliment to be addressed as
молодой человек instead of мужчина.
Two meanings old man or a grandfather
A word дедушка can be used to address to an old man approximately starting from the age of 70.
Be attentive because a word дедушка sounds quite similar to the word девушка.
Oh, hi!
You shouldn't use a word молодой человек, young man to address to young male kids.
There is another word for that.
Мальчик can be addressed to boys younger 16 years old.
As for kids, they can address middle-aged and old men as дядя,
which literally means uncle or дяденька,
which can mean mister and it will be in a friendly way.

This word is mainly used in official correspondence.
It can also be used in speech in order to address to high officials,
some people in authority and in business communication.
Another option is to address people by their first and middle names.

official meetings, conferences and public events.

It means respected or honorable.
You can add a name and a middle name to address somebody.
For example, уважаемый Владимир Владимирович, уважаемая Мария Викторовна.
And with a plural form you can use some words like гости, guests or зрители, spectators and so on.
You can also use these words separately but it often has an ironic meaning.

Another polite way to address people is by using forms of dear in Russian,
дорогой masculine form, дорогая feminine form, дорогие plural form.
Гражданин masculine form, гражданка feminine form, граждани plural form means a citizen or citizens in a plural form.
It is very formal and was used in the Soviet times to address people.
Нет, вы смотрите, как будто меня подозреваете.
Давайте не будем, гражданин. Давайте не будем отвлекаться.
Please note that this word is not used anymore to address people.
It kind of brings to mind pictures of Soviet police.
Though you can use these words to specify citizenship of a person.
For example, он гражданин России.
A word товарищ was used in Soviet times as unisex and democratic way of addressing people
in order to eliminate all social and gender differences.
A word товарищ is no longer used in everyday speech
but it is still used by military men to address individuals by ranks.
For example, товарищ генерал.
Note that a word товарищ is also translated as a friend.
Though it is quite outdated and it's not used a lot in speech.
Its synonyms are друг, подруга, подружка, приятель, приятельница.
Or some slang words дружище, друган, подружайка.

A word ребята is commonly used to address children at school or students at university.
It is a less common and more formal way to address to a group of young people you don't know,
both women and men.
If you come to Russia, you might notice that some people address others as брат,
which literally means brother, or сестра, sister,
even though they are not their relatives and may not even know each other.
This way of addressing people is widely used among non-Russian people living in Russia
and other post-Soviet countries as well as Russian гопники.
Братан, чё встал? Эй, это же ребёнок.
Братишка, чё встал?
They often use different forms of брат and сестра.
For example, брат, братишка, братан, братуха, сестра, сестрёнка.
Normally, if one of these words is addressed to you by non-Russian people or a person,
they are usually trying to show their respect by this.
However, if it is said by a Russian гопник late at night, you should better run.
Just trust me.
In brief, when you are in Russia, don't walk at night and beware people shouting
and other informal ways to get your attention.
Чувак is a popular Russian slang word that means dude.
You will notice that many Russian people use this word a lot,
though many of them do not even know the real origin of this word.
This word was created by стиляги, who were the members of a youth counterculture
from the late 1940s until the early 1960s in the Soviet Union.
So, in fact, a word чувак means человек уважающий высокую американскую культуру,
person who respects high American culture.
Чуваки, ножниц нету? Надо вернуть должок.
