Hello everyone and welcome to my channel.
Today, we're going to learn how to compare things thanks to comparatives.
Let's begin.
What is a comparative?
There are three types of comparatives.
To say that something is bigger or better, we use PLUS.
To say that two things are the same, we use SI.
And to say that something is less good or less big, we use LESS.
Of course, we frame the adjectives with these comparative adverbs.
For example, comparative of superiority.
The car is faster than the truck.
Whereas, as we have seen, the adjective in the middle is framed or surrounded by the comparative adverbs.
It's PLUS QUE.
Example of comparative of inferiority.
The pencil is less long than the case.
And to say that two things are equal, we use the comparative of equality.
Example, the car is as fast as the motorcycle.
Bravo!
Let's go for a little collaboration.
Let's open our books on page 41 and start exercises 1, 2 and 3.
Exercise number 1.
We have here a small table of comparisons.
Concerning the comparative of inferiority, equality and superiority.
The first sentence.
Electric energy is more recent than wind energy.
Superiority.
The petrol engine pollutes less than the diesel.
Inferiority.
Wind energy is as old as navigation.
Equality.
Wind energy is more widespread than tidal energy.
Superiority.
A diesel car works as well as a petrol car.
Equality.
Today there are fewer glaciers than in the past.
Inferiority.
Diesel engines produce as much as petrol engines.
Equality.
Here we ask you to keep the same idea and to transform this sentence with a comparative of inferiority.
But before, it is necessary to point out that there are transformations that sometimes lead to a change of tense of the verb.
For example, today China consumes more coal than in the past.
The answer will be, in the past, China consumed less coal than today.
So the remark here, the verb consume, in the first sentence, is conjugated in the present tense.
In the second, it is a prefix.
The second sentence.
In the 20th century, ecologists were more numerous than in the 19th century.
The answer.
In the 20th century, ecologists were less numerous than in the 19th century.
A comparative now of superiority.
It rains less in Africa than in Europe.
The answer.
It rains more in Europe than in Africa.
The next.
In the 20th century, there is less oil in Africa than in the Middle East.
The answer.
There is more oil in the Middle East than in Africa.
Now we ask you to complete the text with less as well as more.
Today there are more cars than before.
However, there is less oil.
Also, fuel is always more expensive.
In France, for example, the liter of gasoline is today at 1.48 euros.
And the liter of gasoline is at 1.50 euros in some stations.
Gasoline is therefore almost as expensive as gasoline.
However, if gasoline costs much less than gasoline,
we also hope that tomorrow more cars will run on electricity.
Congratulations to all for following this lesson on the comparative.
I hope it has become much clearer for you.
