In this bonus footage, 22-year-old Spencer Oddo, owner of Broken Axe Leather Company in Austin, Texas, shows Aldo how to craft a custom, handmade leather belt.
[Music]
what's up you guys we just stepped
outside and Spencer brought out a lot of
goods that he sells at broken axe
leather company I really want to get
into it can you show me how to make some
of these things let's make a belt all
right I'm excited walk me through the
process for sure all right so this is a
draw knife so this is what is going to
enable us to cut a straight
[Music]
strip so now we've got our belt blank um
and now we're going to take this here
and I've got a template for both ends of
the belt and I'm going to trace on the
pattern that we need so these are the
holes um to attach our belt loop and for
the belt buckle itself to come through
now we'll take the belt blank with our
Trace pattern on it line everything up
and punch out the end of it here and now
we'll cut out the middle section for the
belt buckle actually come
through oh dang that is I go through no
oh wow about halfway there there you go
oh man you got to put a ton of force in
that and so now we'll cut the holes uh
for the rivets so what are the different
sizes here do you use the same size hole
for every belt that you make right so at
for this portion everything is the same
for every belt and a little bit later
down the road that's where we'll
actually have you try it on and I'll
custom fit this one to you so now uh
we're going to take what's called an
edge beveler and we're going to Bevel
all the edges
[Music]
now we're going to thin out the tongue
here cuz when you fold it over you don't
want it to be too thick otherwise it's
going to sit really far away from your
waist so I'll take what's what's called
a skyver here so this is one of those
tools that I upgraded as I went along
this one was $120 the first one that I
started with was like $10 okay and this
one's difficult it takes a little bit of
practice otherwise the knife will go too
far
down now we need to finish these edges
so I'm going to take a Dy pin here and
it's just basically got a lot of leather
diey in it and it's just going to give a
really nice finish edged look right
we're going to go ahead and put on the
Buckle and the and the belt keeper here
do you ever get requests for custom
belts and custom belt buckles sure yeah
especially here in Texas sometimes you
know we have to use rivets where the
people can pull the buckles off and put
on their big Texas buckles you know
everything's bigger in Texas right
that's right so these are screw in
Chicago Screws is what they call so it's
real finished on the front it looks nice
on the front but on the back you screw
it in so that you know that way the the
person can change out their Buckle or
put a different style buckle on as well
you want to do the second one here that
looks like it's about tight enough right
there sweet awesome so um now we go to
sizing so why don't you try that on and
we'll fit it to
you awesome I'll come and Mark you on
this side
okay that's good so now we've got a
standard template that I use this one's
been used and abused for a while now so
what is this Mark for like how long do
you make the belt it's about 4 in bigger
than um the size panty you wear and so
now you leave people room to to gain a
little weight yeah either way you go
I'll you room to go up or down you know
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt
that we're going
down awesome so I'll go ahead and give
you this if you want to help us punch a
couple holes you can see them all lined
up there
[Music]
oh gosh that's one of those ones that's
tough again all right we're going to
edit this down so that I get it in one
shot first try there we go first try
Okay first try you see that guys cool
and the very last step is we're going to
do the Final Cut and finish that in like
we did the rest of the belt so I'm going
to use what's called a head knife here
help us get a nice straight
cut and there we go we've got uh new
belt for Aldo here that's awesome there
you go man thank you so much you're
welcome thanks so much for watching the
hustle make sure you don't miss out on
