have already heard it's a okay who's there Otto as I was saying we're reading a story that is a okay Otto I know that's you be careful I guess I'll just need to read this story without you let's read The Ugly Duckling once upon a time it was summer in the country the wheat was yellow the oats were green and the sun warmed a deep still Lake hidden in the thick Woods in this place a young mother duck made her nest the mother duck had been sitting on her eggs for quite some time and was beginning to feel impatient wa when will I meet my babies she wondered and then at last the eggs cracked one after another chick chick little yellow feathered heads popped up quack quack they cried how large the world is the mother duck giggled but then noticed that there was one large egg that had not yet cracked tired she sat down again soon an old duck came to pay her a visit you know the old duck began that egg that won't crack is really a turkey egg it must have been placed here by mistake if I were you I'd leave it the mother duck considered the old Duck's advice H I'll just sit a bit longer she decided and so she did the great egg burst at last chick chick out tumbled a long large gray feathered strong but strange looking bird the mother duck had never seen a creature like this before I must see if you know how to swim like the others she resolved into the water they all went and the large gray duckling paddled well it's not a turkey said the mother duck see how beautifully it moves its legs and how it holds itself upright this this duckling is strong it was now time for the mother duck to show her ducklings The Way of the World off they went to explore but the duckling siblings were unfriendly and rude how ugly he is they shouted back and forth others were unkind too the hen at the poultry yard the little girl who fed the animals and even the old turkey who puffed himself up like a ship in full sale too bad he can't be hatched all over again he commented the duckling heard all of this and it made him feel sad over time matters got worse the duckling was growing now and he decided it best to run away he ran and ran and at last came to a wide Moore where wild ducks made their home flying up to examine their new companion they asked who are you the duckling was hopeful to make friends then from one of the wild ducks bills came you are uncommonly ugly the duckling continued on his journey the days were lonely the duckling stumbled upon a cottage ruled by a cat and hen who were just as unpleasant as most everyone else can you lay eggs the hen questioned no the duckling replied can you purr the cat demanded no but I can swim and plunge underwater with great skill the duckling answered back well you are strange the cat and hen concluded you do not understand me so I will go out into the wide world again the duckling said and so he went it was Autumn now the leaves were Brown and the air was cold the duckling swam on water plunged beneath and one day noticed a magnificent flock of large dazzling white birds with swooping necks rise from the pond he had never seen anything so beautiful before and strained his neck to watch them they were swans with long Splendid Wings that could spread out wide to fly so very high winter came and the duckling suffered through harsh cold and miserable storms he kept swimming to not freeze and his wings continued to grow becoming larger and stronger eventually Winter's Frost melted away and the duckling found himself in a Moore when the sun Shone again he shook his great wings and out from the reads floated three beautiful swans he hung his head low how I wish I could fly with those kingly birds but I am so ugly the duckling then opened his eyes peered into the water and noticed a stately creature looking back at him it was himself he was no longer the plump and awkward duckling from many seasons ago he had grown into a swan he shook his feathers stretched his slender neck and in the joy of his heart said how little did I dream of so much happiness when I was the ugly despised duckling and with great confidence he flapped his wings and joined his fellow swans forever the end have you heard this story before it's been around for a long time because has a great lesson about being resilient oh Oto I knew it was you back there hey do you know what resilient means yes resilient means that you keep going after bad or hard things happen to you someone is resilient if they get up after they fall down and learning how to be resilient is not easy it takes takes practice but it's worth it
