SPS amazing today we learned about
sherff and the United States they are
the only law enforcement officials that
are directly accountable to the people
the constitution of their state and the
US
Constitution the office of the sheriff
is the oldest non-military law
enforcement entity in the world
originating around the 9th century in
England the name itself comes from the
term Shire reev which referred to Royal
officials or Reeves who were appointed
to oversee a shire or a division of
land after the Norman Conquest of
England in 1066 the office of sheriff
became more important due to their role
in helping Kings establish a firm
government their duties included keeping
the peace collecting taxes maintaining
jails arresting fugitives maintaining
the list of wanted criminals and serving
orders for the king's
court the British Empire then brought
the concept of a sheriff to its colonies
including North
America as the United States became an
independent country and expanded into
the West the sheriff became an iconic
figure in law enforcement these new
frontier States had many Lawless areas
and the sheriffs played a key role in
establishing the rule of law in those
areas so important was this role that
Most states included the office of
sheriff in their constitutions and often
required them to be
elected sheriffs are now often directly
elected by the voters of their County
and in Most states they are elected to
four-year terms today the duties of a
sheriff vary across the country just as
in centuries past they enforced the law
but this now includes enforcing traffic
laws giving tickets and citations and
Performing Court
duties these Court duties include
serving and enforcing warrants for
arrest overseeing juries serving as
bayith and arranging transportation for
defendants additionally sheriffs can
have investigative and coroner duties as
well fun fact two former presidents in
US history have also been sheriffs
Grover Cleveland in New York and
Theodore Roosevelt a deputy sheriff in
South Dakota throughout history sheriffs
have played an important role in
preserving the peace and protecting the
people of the United States wow Selena
