mayoral governments commission mayor counsil and Council manager the commission system is the least common but also one of the oldest systems of local government in which a group of officials called Commissioners run the city one of those Commissioners is chosen to be mayor and presides over meetings in the mayor council system the mayor serves as an executive and the city council serves as the legislative branch which mirrors the president and Congress at the federal level this mayoral type originated in England in the late medieval period and English settlers brought it to the American colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries the last but most common mayoral system is the council manager system in which the city city council serves as a legislative body and runs overall Administration Mayors are then chosen from among the city council on a rotating basis Mayors responsibility vary across the country but often include proposing legislation voting and Council meetings overseeing public service departments appointing Municipal officials and meeting with constituents to listen to their concerns they also lead press conferences represent the town at meetings with other officials and attend public events in an official capacity the mayoral election process varies widely per City in some cities in towns the voters directly elect the mayor while in others council members make the choice most Mayors are elected to serve 4 years and don't have any term limits fun fact there have been three mayors that have gone on to serve as President Andrew Johnson Grover
