Join us as we take a tired garage floor and turn it into a clean, beautiful, and functional space! In this friendly step-by-step episode, I’ll show you exactly how we installed our SwissTrax RibTrax modular flooring system—from planning and ordering to laying tiles, cutting around obstacles, adding ramps, and dialing in that perfect fit.

We start with planning your layout using the SwissTrax online design tool. You simply enter your garage dimensions—even irregular shapes—and the tool builds a layout and color plan for you. You can choose from preset designs like racetracks, checkerboards, and borders, or create your own pattern from scratch. We used three colors, including a fun teal that complements our home’s seafoam exterior, and the design tool helped ensure everything would line up correctly the first time.

Next, we prep the space. No grinding, etching, or coatings needed—just sweep or blow out the slab. Our 25-year-old concrete floor went straight under the tiles. The SwissTrax tiles are free-floating, so the floor underneath doesn’t need to be perfect.

I also show some helpful tricks, like how to break open the strapped tile bundles without using a knife, and how the RibTrax two-tone effect shows different complementary colors depending on your viewing angle—very clever engineering.

Then we dive into how the tiles snap together, using the peg-and-loop system on adjacent sides. We talk about proper starter-tile orientation, laying your first three rows, leaving expansion gaps along the walls, and notching tiles around garage-door tracks. A quick “hopscotch” move gets the tiles off the wall just the right amount so they can expand and contract with temperature changes.

You'll see how we install the front edge ramps, lower the garage door to position the floor correctly under the gasket, and then build out the rest of the pattern. We also show our time-saving “starter strip” trick that avoids the constant stand-up, kneel-down routine while working under suspended cabinets.

Finally, we cut the perimeter pieces for a perfect fit, maintain the expansion gap around the edges, and finish the last rows. The result is a beautiful, durable, and very comfortable SwissTrax floor that’s easy to clean, fun to walk on—yes, even in your socks—and transforms the whole garage.
