I've been itching to take my Ibex 450 motocamping ever since I got my hands on it and now that the weather is finally starting to warm up, it was time. I loaded up the Ibex with motocamping gear and headed over the mountain to one of my favorite local-ish campgrounds. Spring motorcycle camping is the best because you can have a campfire and there is usually not anyone else around, even in a campground. Taking the CFMOTO Ibex 450 camping was a breeze. It handled the street and off road riding sections like a champ even fully loaded with motocamping gear. This trip went very well and I'm excited for many future Ibex 450 moto camping trips in the future!
I don't exactly know where I'm going.
First motocamping trip of the spring.
How am I supposed to send for help?
Yeah, they changed the name of their sleeping pads again.
They are smart and they are coordinated.
They want your food.
He may have picked up a couple of 80 year olds.
I don't know.
Thanks guys.
Extra firewood is not a bad thing.
I never take my own advice.
Just use the toilet and leave.
Like what the hell?
Like Batman in the shadows.
Hello friends.
I'm here in my driveway.
The bike is all loaded up because we're going motocamping on the Ibex 450 for the first time.
And the real fun part is I don't exactly know where I'm going.
I think the campground I want to go to is open,
but it's not supposed to be open this early.
I just noticed that you could reserve sites on the website.
So I'm going to ride out there and see if it's open.
We'll camp there.
If it isn't, we're going to improvise.
About an hour ride out there with some decent gravel when we get close.
So I'm going to take off and ride and I'll bring you back in when we get to the fun part.
Wish me luck.
This is just some fun fast forest roads that go up and over to the river on the other side,
which is where the campground we're looking for is.
I'm curious to see how this bike does with all this gear on it
on off-road gravel in this case compared to how it does with gear.
I will tell you on the street, it's definitely sitting lower.
I didn't crank up the preload.
I probably should have.
The front feels lighter as a result of that.
It really wants to come up when you're giving it a lot of gas,
if you're not paying attention.
So definitely the preload needs to be cranked up on this bike
before I put this much gear on it.
Again, there's about a hundred liters back there.
It's not an insignificant amount, but it should be good.
I didn't overpack, but I didn't like, it wasn't very discerning either.
I just threw in everything that I thought I might want
because it's only one night and I have the big bags on here right now.
So let's see how it does.
I sort of just feel my way through here over to the top.
There's two places to come out and sometimes I end up at one
and sometimes I end up at the other.
I don't really worry about it too much
because there's not really anywhere to get lost up here,
but we'll see.
We'll see how we do.
Definitely notice there's less power also with the weight.
It's a noticeable difference, which it should be on a 450.
That's not, again, shocking information.
It's not a revelation.
But just confirming it, I guess, is a thing we're doing.
Oh, a big hole.
Oh yeah.
Oh, the bottom of the rear.
Definitely need to crank that preload up.
Like I said, I never know where I'm going to come out.
So we're coming out on the southern side.
Some decent dispersed spots in here.
They're usually taken by semi-permanent residents, shall we say.
So nice to see that one open.
They're also usually trashed,
which is why sometimes the BLM just comes in and takes the fire pits out.
Which sucks because one of my favorite spots is up here by the creek.
And every time I go to camp in it,
the fire pit has been removed because people trash it.
And then people like us who would respect it don't get to use it.
Another decent one that's right on the creek.
Pretty big too.
Not taken yet this time of year.
That's good.
All right, moment of truth.
Gate's open.
Yes, let's go.
So on the website, it says this campground doesn't open until the beginning of May,
and it is not.
But like I said, I went online and the reservations were open.
First modal camping trip of the spring.
The weather is fantastic.
The campground is not empty, which actually kind of blows my mind.
It might be about half full, but we got a great spot.
The creek is right behind us.
It's walking distance.
And I'm excited to get out and do some camping off the CFMoto for the first time.
Before I start unpacking, I just want to say thank you to Motocamp Nerd for sponsoring this video.
That will become pretty obvious as I'm showing you all the new gear I got that I'm trying out from him.
I want to start with the gear that I wore on the way out here.
You've already seen it.
You just didn't know it was new.
Motocamp Nerd's selling riding gear now.
And he started with just climb, which is great.
Climb gear is awesome.
We already know that, but it's kind of expensive.
So I was like, you got to get some more inexpensive, more entry-level stuff for us to try.
And so he's been working with Helmet House and he's carrying Tourmaster stuff.
So this is the brand new Tourmaster ADV Lite jacket.
And it's exactly that.
It's light.
It's very comfortable.
It's very flexible.
It's waterproof.
You know, what I like about it is it's light, flexible.
It's only $200.
It comes with a back pad, which a lot of less expensive armor does not.
And it seems to be a really nice piece of kit.
It doesn't breathe very well because it is laminated and waterproof.
But it's not Gore-Tex or anything like that.
So definitely get a little sweaty wearing it.
It's kind of a colder weather jacket, a wetter weather jacket.
But they do have a mesh version, which I'm going to get and check out.
So that's cool.
I got started with that.
I've also got a new sleeping pad, a new quilt, which I haven't tried before.
We're going to be right at the comfort rating for that quilt tonight.
So this will be an interesting test.
But first, I got to get the tent set up and get everything kind of settled so that I can
run into town and acquire a few provisions for the evening.
It is about two o'clock in the afternoon, so plenty of time.
Can I just complain about something really fast?
I have my inReach Messenger Plus, which I've used a ton of times.
I got a new phone, so I didn't think to pair it while I was at home.
You can't pair it where there's no cell phone service.
The inReach Mini is the same way.
So how am I supposed to send for help, right, if I can't pair this to the phone
without access to the internet?
And what's stupid is, it's like, well, I can't verify that you have a membership.
Yes, you can!
Because I have to be able to send the message through your messaging center,
or whatever, which should know.
I think SOS still works, obviously.
I hope so.
That would be very, very not cool if it didn't.
But kind of stupid I can't pair this to my phone.
So make sure you pair before you leave.
So I'll try to remember to do that when I'm in town where I think I'll have service.
I told my wife I would message her when I got here, and now I can't.
So she's going to freak out until I get service and can tell her I'm fine.
Not cool, Garmin.
I'm not going to bore you with every single piece of gear.
I'll put links in the description if you care,
but I do want to show you a couple things that are new in particular.
This is the Big Agnes Campmeister Deluxe.
Yeah, they changed the name of their sleeping pads again.
It was the Q-Core Deluxe, and then it was the Boundary Deluxe,
and now it is the Campmeister Deluxe.
Although last time all they changed was the name,
this time they changed the color.
Oh, cool inflation sack.
That's much bigger.
And they upped the R value.
So not only is this the most comfortable sleeping pad that I own and have used,
but now it has a 7 R rating, so you can sleep like on bare snow if you want to.
I don't recommend it, but you technically could.
Not very big, huh?
That's what I love about quilts, man.
They pack down so small.
This is the Sea to Summit Ember 30-degree quilt.
Motocamp Nerd sells this too.
And I like quilts a lot because, like I said, they pack down smaller,
but they're super warm.
But this will be an interesting test tonight because
the comfort rating on this bag is 39 degrees,
and it's supposed to be just about 39 degrees tonight.
So we'll see if it lives up to its supposed rating.
And this is a different kind of quilt,
because unlike the other quilts I use which have elastic straps
and you just lay on top of your sleeping pad with the quilt kind of wrapped around you,
this is wide enough and has enough strap.
This has like five or six because it goes all the way around the pad.
So when you roll around at night,
you don't get that sort of puff of cold air when the quilt shifts
like it does with the ones that aren't quite as wide.
So this is a wider quilt, but you saw it still packs down just as small.
So pretty excited to see how it does.
This Camp Meister pad is super comfortable just like the others
because it has horizontal baffles as well as vertical.
So you don't feel like you're on that old 1980s floaty raft thing.
It's upside down.
Just goes under your sleeping pad.
The straps do, and they actually unhook.
But let's start with this end.
Kind of put these through.
You can also cinch up the bottom to hold the heat in,
which I will definitely do tonight.
So okay, that's on there.
So you can see it wraps around the pad.
So the pad is essentially inside the bag,
or it will be when I tighten these down like I intend to.
And you just unclip the top to get in and out.
And when I get cold, I'll snap that back on
and I'm gonna be cozy snug as a bug.
So that's my new sleeping pad and my new quilt.
You know, it's funny.
I always joke.
People say, what do you do to protect your food from bears?
And I say nothing.
It's not the bears I'm afraid of.
It's the Blue Jays.
I'm not making this up.
One of them was like just flying around and saw me.
You can see him.
He's in the frame right now.
And he started making a bunch of noise
and like five more Blue Jays showed up.
And they're just like waiting for me to put food out
that they can steal.
They are smart and they are coordinated.
And they want your food.
You can't leave it out on the table.
They will eat it.
Watch out.
Bears are scary, but the real thieves are the Blue Jays.
Dude, you hear the Blue Jays?
They're everywhere.
Also, cigars are bad.
Don't smoke them.
They're bad for you.
They're gross.
Not endorsing it.
For the record, we've had this conversation,
but I only really smoke them when I'm camping.
My doctor doesn't even consider me a smoker.
Because I have like 12 cigars a year.
They just always happen to be on camera.
But I still had to tell the life insurance company that I smoke
because I didn't want them seeing a video after I died
and then not paying out.
So my rates are jacked
because I have one cigar a month on average.
So I was going to save this for the fireside chat,
but we're here and I was reminded
because I looked at my phone.
I don't know if you remember the trip to the coast.
I was on the K...
No, I was on the Transalp.
I was on the Transalp.
Stayed in a yurt and I had this whole thing about
Carrie Underwood's Before He Cheats song.
Like, because it was...
There was this punk cover of it
that I was playing on my playlist a lot.
That made me think,
what other songs are like super open to interpretation?
I don't know if you knew this,
but I was an English major and an English teacher.
So, you know, there's what the text implies
and there's what the text says.
And I had this great professor in college
who always said, you know,
all interpretations are valid
as long as you can support them with evidence from the text.
So with that in mind, I heard the Toby Keith song.
What is it?
I don't even know what the title is.
I'm Not As Good As I Once Was song.
It's like, you know, he's at a bar
and these two chicks are like,
hey, do you want to party?
And he's like, I can't do that all the time,
but I can do it today.
And then his buddy gets in a fight
and he's like, well, I'm not as good as I once was,
but I'm as good once as I ever was.
I use that one a lot for drinking
because like I can hit it hard all night
once in a while, like I used to,
but I pay for it for at least a day,
if not two afterwards.
So I'm as good once, but I'm not doing it all week.
You remember the days when you would like,
maybe this was just me.
I don't know.
This is me longing for my youth,
but most of you are around my age
in that middle-aged bubble
based on my demographics.
Remember when you could like party a lot
till 2 a.m., whatever, get up,
drink a Gatorade, go to work.
Those were the days.
Youth is wasted on the young.
Didn't know how good we had it.
Anyway, that song, the first verse of that song,
he's at a bar and a woman comes up to him and says,
hey, actually, hell, I'll just read it to you
because I pulled the lyrics up.
I pulled the website up before I left.
So it's important that we're addressing the text directly.
So let's do that.
She said, I've seen you in here before.
I said, I've been in here a time or two.
She said, hello, my name is Bobby Joe.
Meet my twin sister, Betty Lou.
And we're both feeling kind of wild tonight.
You're the only cowboy in this place.
And if you're up for a rodeo,
I'll put a big Texas smile on your face.
I just want to point out, that's all we have.
That's all the evidence we have, okay?
And so you have to kind of extrapolate
from what information that you have.
We don't even know they're in a bar.
It doesn't say that.
It just says, I've seen you in here before.
And he said, I've been here a time or two.
So here's the pieces of information
that I'm latching onto.
My name is Bobby Joe.
Meet my twin sister, Betty Lou.
I bet if you looked it up, if you Googled,
I didn't do this, but if you Googled the name Betty Lou
and when it was most popular,
my guess is it was around 1930.
Based on the information that's in this song,
I'm just going to cut to the chase
because this is a camping video,
not me analyzing Toby Keith video.
The women's names are Betty Lou and Bobby Joe.
That is most likely the name of an elderly woman
and her sister.
There's a good chance of that.
Okay, we don't actually know they're in a bar
and the whole song is about how old he is.
He could be at an old folks home.
He could be at a square dancing event.
The point is, he may have picked up a couple
of 80 year olds.
I don't know.
Based on the song, I'd say that's more likely
than the way most people are interpreting it.
Now, is he a senior citizen?
I don't know.
He's himself, right?
And at that age, he was probably in his 40s.
So if we're to assume the character is Toby Keith himself
at the time the song was written,
he may have picked up a couple of cougars.
I don't know.
When I listen to the song and hear Bobby Joe and Betty Lou,
that's what I think.
You drop your theory in the comments.
Thanks, Toby Keith.
That's enough of that.
That was 10 minutes of talking.
Oh my God.
Okay.
Talk to you later.
It's dinner time.
I wasn't sure what the campfire situation was going to be,
so I just brought one of these
because I've been meaning to try these forever anyway.
So I bought these like two years ago
and I haven't used them yet.
So the idea is,
these are instead of just like a bunch of empty carbs,
this is mostly protein.
Five net carbs for the whole thing.
Pretty good for keto.
Like I said, they make these in Bend.
And this one is beef tacos,
which I'm very excited about
because I like beef tacos.
So I got a few.
I got a buffalo ranch chicken.
I brought two just in case it's not very filling
because it's not very big.
Tear open pouch and remove oxygen absorber.
That's a good idea.
Sometimes forget to do that.
Oh my God.
There's little taco pieces in here.
Okay.
Bring six ounces of water to a boil.
So that's how you know it's small.
Six ounces.
Not very much.
Fortunately, I have this new jet boil
and by new, I mean new.
And I've been using the same one.
So that old green one I had,
we bought when I decided to go full time.
It was my kind of congratulations gift to myself.
This one just came out.
So this is a new jet boil
and all they really changed was
the igniter is a little different.
So hopefully it works now
and the dial is a little different.
I'm hoping we can just light this up.
We'll bring this to a boil.
We'll have some delicious stuff.
I do like that it is orange now.
So the old Java kit was green.
If you don't live in Oregon, you don't know.
But orange and black are the colors of Oregon State University,
which is where I went.
And my daughter is going.
And green and yellow are the colors of University of Oregon,
which we hate.
So I'm pretty glad to be back in beaver orange.
Oh my god!
We'll see how long it works.
I think my other one worked for a while,
a couple months, and then just took a s***.
So, all right.
So we just have to bring this to a boil
and we'll pour it in here,
stir and let it sit for 7 to 10 minutes.
We're gonna go probably 12
because based on my experience,
these things never rehydrate as quickly as they say.
I would rather have it be over hydrated than under hydrated
and just be chomping down.
That was slick.
I like the new setup here.
Is it worth upgrading?
For me, it would be because,
or it was,
because the old one never lit.
So I always had to carry a lighter,
which I usually have
because I smoke cigars when I'm camping,
but not always.
So it's nice to have an igniter that actually works.
And it's boiling just like that.
Don't leave your hand there.
It's not good.
Okay.
It says,
contents are submerged but not swimming.
Oh, I don't know where you're going.
That road doesn't go anywhere.
People just pulled in.
They're going the really wrong way.
There's a lot of meat and some little taco pieces in here.
I'm pretty excited about it.
Make sure you get down in the bottom.
Oh, I can smell it.
It smells super good.
I gotta make sure everything gets kind of wet.
Y'all know I prefer to cook on the campfire,
but it's also good to know what's possible
and what is useful.
These are so easy and so small.
It's nice to just pack a dehydrated meal from time to time.
You know, it's a little soupy,
but again, I'd rather have it be a little soupy
than super dry.
So it's been like 15 minutes.
Let's see.
Should we take a bite?
Not bad.
It just doesn't stay hot.
It's weird.
I definitely had worse backpacking meals.
And all protein should theoretically be pretty filling.
Maybe you don't need as much.
I'm gonna give it a 7 out of 10.
Not bad.
It's fire time.
So I got my Bigfoot Bushcraft fire starters.
I have a promo code for these.
I keep forgetting to tell you.
I think it's 15%, but it's at least 10.
Dork on the road is the promo code.
These things work great.
They work great when I have kits with stuff like this cool fire steel.
And it works really good.
I went exploring and it turns out the neighbors didn't just leave for a little while.
They left.
They left a bunch of...
Like this big round was over there at their campsite.
So thanks guys.
Extra firewood is not a bad thing.
I did pay for what I took before.
So don't freak out.
I always get excited and put too much on early, but this one's doing good.
We'll see.
Half of this stuff is pretty wet.
So I'm just gonna kind of keep it around the fire and try to dry it out as I go.
But half of it seems pretty burnable.
So we'll see how it goes.
And then I got way too much kindling, which is a good problem to have.
Honestly.
Spring camping, man.
You're gonna have a fire.
You get the campground to yourself.
Still gets dark at 8 p.m.
It's not that cold.
Don't know why more people don't do it.
Good morning.
I'm making coffee slowly.
I made a fire.
Which surprised me considering how wet the wood was.
But I got her done.
I feel great today.
Two cigars was not a good idea.
I never take my own advice.
But I was very comfortable.
Campmeister pad, just as comfortable as the Q-Core or the Boundary Deluxe before it.
Not a surprise there.
Warm enough.
I wasn't like toasty warm.
I didn't strap the top strap of the quilt down.
I had it unhooked and bothered to hook it back up.
I thought I'll just pull it up around me.
And I definitely would have been warmer if I'd done that.
So now I know.
But can you sleep reasonably comfortably down to the comfort rating of that quilt?
Yes, you can.
Gotta get used to sleeping on the ground again.
It's been a couple months.
Anyway, I'm gonna let this pour over.
Finish pouring over.
And then enjoy some coffee by the fire.
Oh yeah, that's uh, that's pretty full.
Necessary.
Now we can go on about our business.
How's my hair look?
Terrible.
Cool.
Okay, the coffee's kicking in.
The ibuprofen's kicking in.
I'm feeling a lot better.
So it's just about time to start packing up.
But before I do, I hope you'll indulge me on a mini rant.
Because this is a very nice campground.
It's kind of in the middle of nowhere.
It's perfectly situated for people that want to ride the mountain biking trails and stuff nearby.
It's a BLM campground.
And it doesn't usually open until May.
So somebody went to the effort of opening it early because the weather's been nice.
And that's awesome.
And I'm so excited that despite all the, shall we say, turmoil at our federal agencies,
they still found a way to get this campground open early.
And that's amazing.
And I'm just thankful for the dedicated employees who make those things happen
and help take care of the wilderness that we all enjoy.
What I'm not thankful for is the assholes who come in and do things like...
There are two bathrooms here.
One, I went into yesterday, had s**t all over the toilet seat.
And the other one, the one I've been using, because I'm not going to sit on the other one,
pretty sure somebody peed all over the toilet paper rolls on the lower rung.
But they obviously didn't have the length to get on the upper roll.
So that's what I've been using.
But that's the kind of thing, the kind of s**t, literally, that gets these campgrounds shut down.
Why would you come and do that?
Just don't come in the woods.
Or just use the toilet and leave.
What the hell?
It's funny?
It isn't.
Really, it isn't funny.
You're just a dips**t and I'm mad at you.
So take care of what we have so that we can keep it.
Please, anyone that's watching, I know most of you do, I'm going to start packing up.
Not much left to do, but put my riding gear on, put my camp shoes in the bag,
put the camera away and leave.
So I think I'm going to end the video here because I got to put the camera away.
So thank you for watching.
Thanks for coming along.
I got to say, not shockingly, the Ibex 450 did great.
Came through with flying colors on its first moto camping trip.
Looking forward to many more moto camping trips on this bike.
And I just want to say thanks again to Motocamp Nerd for sponsoring this video
and my camping trips in general because I use a lot of gear that I got from him.
The lighting here is awesome.
Super cool.
I'm like Batman in the shadows.
I'm going to pack up and get out of here.
Thanks for watching.
I appreciate you.
And please do not forget to be excellent to each other.
I thank you.
Excellent.
We're both feeling kind of wild tonight.
You're the only cowboy in this place.
So if you're up for a rodeo, we'll put a big Texas smile on your face.
And I said, girls, I ain't as good as I once was.
That is true.
You.
