it's
all Street Sports good
job in today's episode we learned about
federalism which is the system of
government in the US which divides
political Authority between the federal
and state governments throughout history
and under British rule one group or
person would hold too much power and
oppress its citizens the founding
fathers including Thomas Jefferson and
Patrick Henry wanted to divide up the
powers not only between the three
branches of the federal government but
also between the federal government and
the states to protect people's freedom
by limiting the power given to each
level federalism was the basis of the
Constitution and later the Bill of
Rights highlighted by the 10th Amendment
which states that powers not delegated
to the United States by the Constitution
nor prohibited by it to the states are
reserved to the states respectively or
to the
people this protected the rights of the
citizens the states and local
municipalities while giving the US
government sufficient powers that it
lacked under the original Articles of
Confederation to raise money for defense
pay down the national debt and establish
the rule of law
the Constitution also makes clear that
it is the supreme law of the land which
means that it will always rank higher
than state or local laws the 14th
Amendment ratified in 1868 ensures that
state and local governments must
generally respect the rights listed in
the Bill of Rights and future amendments
to the
Constitution since States and localities
are closer to their residents they are
better able to meet their residents
needs on certain issues the founders
created the system of federalism to give
States and localities the freedom to do
so different levels are responsible for
handling different issues like voting
and property issues for the states and
National Defense and currency for the
federal more importantly its intention
is to make clear the limits of
government at each level to protect the
liberty of its
citizens fun fact the word federalism
comes from the Latin word Fus which
means Covenant League treaty or Alliance
when the United States banded together
to declare independence the founders
were creating a federal union in the
sense that the union was like an
alliance of the different states
federalism today still plays an
important part in preserving State's
autonomy while giving the federal
government sufficient power to govern
and we want to say a big thank you to
