have you seen mom
yeah she seems upset
she shouldn't be she makes it to almost
everything we do missing my play isn't
that big of a deal
i know that and you know that but mom's
sad
it's not easy being a mom and an
important businesswoman if i were her
i'd be excited to go on a business trip
where they have nice beaches
leo she'd rather see her son play
sherlock holmes than work on her tan
but this work conference is the biggest
of the year and i know she can't miss it
do you think you're gonna be a working
mom
i don't know seems hard i think i'd like
to have a family but i know i want a
career doing what
i don't care i just want to wear cute
business clothes every day
sounds about right we should do
something for mom to cheer her up we
should something that lets her know that
we appreciate and respect her work here
at home and at her job what you're
thinking how about we go talk to a woman
from history who balance work and being
a mom we'll think of something
i like it
working mom
let's see where we end up
[Music]
oh albert don't be so hard on yourself
what you are attempting is most
ambitious
i'm such a failure
why can't i get my machine propelled to
186 000 miles per second
i'm never going to travel through time
your general theory of relativity is
already amazing albert you have changed
physics forever theories shmerries
i wanted to prove that time and space
indeed can bend
that time travel
is possible chin up just keep at it
if anyone can solve the mysteries of
time it's my dearest friend albert
einstein oh thanks marie i i love your
pet talks
especially when they rhyme
okay
back to work
goodness me
did you two come from a different time
yeah we've got an app
i'm leo and she's my sister layla we are
looking for a famous working mom and our
time machine brought us to you
albert is right it is possible
i am marie curie my scientific
accomplishments have indeed made me very
well known and i am a mother of two so i
think that is why your machine has
brought you here to my lab science is my
favorite subject but i didn't know there
were lady scientists in
1921
there aren't many and there were even
fewer when i was beginning my career
decades ago
i had to face many doubters and critics
who believed that women should not be
scientists much less have a career and
balance a family
what are those awards over there
those are my nobel prizes i was the
first woman to ever win one and the
first person to win two
and i don't mean to brag but each nobel
prize is in a different scientific field
of study
one for physics and one for chemistry no
one's ever done that what did you do to
win them i won the first for developing
the theory of radioactivity which led to
the creation of x-rays
the second i won for discovering two
elements that are now on the periodic
table
polonium and radium how did you have
time to also be a mom
do you think you could have won more
science awards if you didn't have a
family actually without my family i
would not have won any awards being a
wife and mother has given me the focus
and drive that i have needed to have a
successful career
really
so do you think all women should try and
be working moms
no
i think everyone is different with
different life circumstances and
different desires
some women will have a strong desire to
build a family some will have a strong
desire to build a career
and some will be driven to build both i
wanted both
yeah but isn't it harder to try to do
both
life is hard no matter what path a
person chooses but it is made easier by
thinking carefully about what you would
like to accomplish in life and then by
pursuing those goals with all of your
heart
being a dedicated scientist helped me to
be a better family member and being a
dedicated mother and wife actually made
me a better scientist
marie nothing's working
i feel horrible
i i think i'm gonna need another of your
great pep talks okay albert keep working
hard i'll be there in a little bit
who's that that's my good friend albert
einstein he's a genius but he's very
sensitive we are good friends and i give
him pep talks when he gets discouraged
mrs curie have you had to rely on your
husband so that you can have a career
no
in fact my wonderful husband pierre
passed away 15 years ago
before he died we were a great team and
made each other's lives better we were
husband and wife and lab partners but
even without him i have managed to
balance being a scientist and a single
mother well we can tell you're an
amazing scientist but are you able to
also be a good mom leo no that is a very
good question and i think only my girls
can really answer but i like to think
that i've been a good mom so far
irene is 24 eve is 17 and they are both
excellent young women who i'm most proud
of have you ever had to miss any of
their events because of your science
work
sometimes yes and i never like to
but it is part of the balancing act of
having a family and a career
this is true for all parents mothers and
fathers our mom has to miss me starring
in my class play because she has an
important business conference that she
can't miss
she's really sad about it
ah yes i'm sure she is disappointed that
she cannot be in two places at once
too bad you haven't what did you call it
an app for that
hey i have an idea
mr einstein said you give great pep
talks will you give one to our mom
i can record it on my phone and we can
show her when we get back to our time
your time traveling device can also
record visual messages
fascinating
science is truly wonderful
i'd love to record a message for your
mother okay mrs curie i'm recording you
can begin
to the mother of leo and layla
i am marie curie winner of two nobel
prizes and mother of two amazing
daughters
my dear judging by your children i feel
confident in the prediction that you are
succeeding as a mother and a
businesswoman
continue giving your all in everything
you do
that example that you are setting is a
far more important gift to your children
than perfect attendance
how many times is mom gonna watch that
message
let her enjoy it it was a great idea to
have mrs curie record a video message
well i'm happy that mom's happy she's
even excited about her business trip now
says she's inspired to impress everyone
at the conference i've been reading more
about mrs curie
her daughters had incredible lives too
irene went on to be like her mom she was
a scientist married a fellow chemist had
a family and also won a nobel prize
what about her other daughter eve was a
journalist and a piano player and was
friends with world leaders
she decided not to be a mom and chose
not to get married until she was 49. but
then get this in 1965 her husband
accepted the nobel peace prize for his
organization's work with children who
live in underdeveloped countries what an
incredible family
yeah but did any of them star as
sherlock holmes in elementary school get
out of here
