welcome to otto's tales i'm jill and
today we're reading remember the ladies
written by kalista gingrich
and illustrated by susan arciero hi otto
now i want you and you to listen to the
fun rhymes in this book but also count
the exciting things that some of
america's first ladies have done i mean
we yes
what's a first lady oh oh don't be
embarrassed that's a great question
i'm glad you asked it a first lady is a
wife of a president
yes and many of our first ladies have
done amazing things one of them rescued
a painting of george washington from a
fire and and one of them even did the
job of president when he was sick
well
we're gonna learn all about it are you
ready okay go get comfortable
let's read
ellis the elephant knew every
president's tale how each led america
and helped it prevail but ellis knew
there was more to their success the
brilliant first ladies with whom they
were blessed the first ladies were
strong a diverse group of wives who each
in their own lived remarkable lives
through good times and bad they
willingly served so liberty and freedom
would be preserved martha washington was
quite famous in her day her example
showed other first ladies the way after
her husband george won the revolution
together they made many contributions
the first lady's role was martha's
invention she approached her work with
care and attention her dignity and grace
were widely admired the mother of our
country left a nation inspired
abigail adams had her husband's respect
she gave frequent advice that was often
direct
as our founders created the nation anew
she advised john remember the ladies too
she asked him to listen to women's
voices so they'd be included in major
choices
as first lady abigail lived where no one
had been at the white house where she
was the first to move in
dolly madison was known for beauty and
charm but while in the white house she
had caused for alarm as the british
invaded america once more the madisons
presided over a nation at war
in washington the british set the white
house ablaze and dolly made the
narrowest of great getaways
she saved a national treasure in that
close call and rescued washington's
portrait right off the wall
ellis learned next about abigail
fillmore a friendly first lady who many
adored like ellis abigail was an avid
reader and she shared her love as a
national leader
abigail added a library to the white
house a lasting contribution from
millard fillmore's spouse smart and
inquisitive this former teacher selected
books for the library to feature
abe lincoln was president throughout the
civil war and his wife mary todd knew
what the fight was for she wished to end
slavery with full emancipation and
encouraged her husband to make a
proclamation
mary tended to troops who were hurt in
the fight lifting their spirits for a
cause that was right
she worked hard to keep the u.s army
supplied so the union could win and heal
the nation's divide
being first lady was nellie taft's major
goal and she quickly grew into her new
leading role as a partner and hostess
she was first class as was her cow on
the white house grass
nelly left her mark on our capital city
with a lasting gift that made it so
pretty as first lady she planted many
cherry trees that still bloom brightly
and blow in the breeze
no woman has ever held our nation's top
post but ellis learned that edith wilson
came close she ably assisted when her
husband fell ill so woodrow wilson could
be president still
edith was a woman with courage and
brains who cared for her husband and
then took the reins
with caution and wisdom she fulfilled
his commands
the people unaware they were safe in her
hands
eleanor roosevelt was remarkable too a
leading first lady with her own point of
view she made human rights and equality
her mission
and the first lady's job a full-time
position
in meetings with the nation's female
reporters she answered questions from
foes and supporters when ellis learned
of all that eleanor had done he thought
she should have made a presidential run
jackie kennedy was an instant sensation
with glamour and grace she charmed the
whole nation in an era of hope some
people thought the kennedys had become
the new camelot
jackie soon added to this sense of
allure when she took americans on a
special tour
for the very first time everyone could
see the beauty of the white house on
national tv
lady bird johnson was rather distressed
that america's roadsides weren't looking
their best she worked hard to make sure
they didn't become littered with trash
all dirty and glum
congress decided to give ladybird the
power to line the highways with
beautiful flowers
ellis thought americans could take great
pride in a country that was restored and
beautified
nancy reagan left her life as a
hollywood star for a stage with a
brighter spotlight by far as a wife she
had ronald's listening ear and
encouraged him in his elected career
while first lady nancy launched a major
campaign to put an end to a problem that
caused much pain she wanted drug-free
schools where children could grow and
urged young americans to just say no
laura bush was a daughter of the lone
star state a charming first lady her
impact was great this former school
teacher was eager to lead a movement to
teach every student to read laura
traveled the country visiting kids in
school and helped them to see that books
could be cool
admiring her efforts ellis could tell
that he and laura would get along well
michelle obama made great historic gains
asking children to stretch their muscles
and brains she challenged them to enjoy
daily exercise and led by example to
their pleasant surprise michelle urged
young people to get up and move and
encourage them all to get in the groove
ellis was soft and he had to admit that
with michelle's advice he could be more
fit
ellis thought about the first ladies he
had met and the others he had not
learned about yet
all had their own special talents and
traits that they used to make the united
states great
they comforted our nation in moments of
need and offered leadership to help
america succeed
ellis was grateful for what the first
ladies had done and now he understood we
should remember each one
the end we love this book because it
shows us how america's first ladies have
served our country in very important
ways by using their special talents
smarts and creativity and these first
ladies each took responsibility of being
married to presidents very seriously
they volunteered their time and energy
and made our country better each in
their own way we continue to honor and
respect them and be inspired to make our
country better in our own way too
otto
let's see if you remember from the book
which first lady reminded her husband to
remember the
ladies me
yes
abigail adams good boy
she was our second first lady married to
president john adams now do you promise
to remember the ladies
yes good boy thank you for watching
otto's tales check out some of our other
stories too keep reading keep watching
and keep learning bye
everyone talks about being themselves
and not being a cookie cutter person i'm
not like most girls i'm independent from
social constructs as if there's some
sort of pioneer in the oregon trail
wilderness watch out for dysentery
this sounds good and all but they're
still following the people they admire
and respect it's impossible to escape
the influence of people around us if you
have the right peers this can be a good
thing but bad peers are lurking in every
corner of your life whether it's at
school or on your phone screen so here
are four tools to help you deal with
peer pressure
number one respect yourself most people
want others to respect them so you just
do what everyone pressures you into
doing that's how you earn respect right
it's just a little jump bro
people will not respect someone who's
easily pressured into doing things if
you want others to respect you you gotta
start by respecting yourself
now this doesn't mean ignoring what
everyone else says just to do whatever
you want so madison would i need you to
work nope
you have to respect me
unlimited power
that's not self-respect that's a
condition called selfish butness it's
always good to look for ways to help
others and there's always a place for
constructive criticism respecting
yourself means considering what's best
for your own well-being before making
decisions you're pressured to make hey
kid
you want to rub a bank
the irony about peer pressure is it
really only helps the people pressuring
you but if you respect yourself you're
always gonna prioritize what's best for
you long term it's okay to say no
it can actually save your life
hey son let's take the fork in here
it'll be fun
[Music]
you are a leader not a sheep so don't
act like one number two take ownership
all peer pressure does is pressure you
to make a decision about something but
your friends cannot make you do anything
it's your decision and if the decision
ultimately belongs to you
then
you are responsible for your actions now
admittedly this is easy to ignore you
just think in the back of your mind that
if something goes wrong your friends are
going to be there to get your back i've
got news
they won't they're too busy covering
their own bags
number three friends come and go you
don't
sometimes it's easy to think that the
friends you have right now are your
entire world and things will never
change i know it's a little hard to
believe and kind of painful to think
about but you will not be where you are
right now forever you're going to go to
a different school you'll get a
different job you'll move to a different
town or country
your world will be turned upside down
and a whole new set of friends may come
along and they'll probably be upside
down too
and those friends of the past will be
just that friends of the
past that's not to say that you'll never
talk to them again your paths might
cross again someday
but don't ever let them pressure you
into doing something you're going to
regret later hey man
we should go get tattoos
what yes yeah
hey guys
i got a tattoo decisions can be
permanent friends usually aren't
number four choose your friends
carefully if you run with wolves
eventually you'll start to howl
if you don't want to howl don't hang
with wolves we can't be friends anymore
whether you like it or not the people
you spend time with rub off on you so
find friends that inspire you to be
better be better
i'm not talking about friends who have
more followers or fancy things that
doesn't actually make you better i'm
talking about things like honesty
discipline and respect
whether you realize it or not when you
surround yourself with these kind of
people you're gonna start acting like
them it's not rocket science and this is
how you make peer pressure work in your
favor they'll be pulling you up instead
of down if you're having a hard time
finding friends like this here's an idea
find older more mature people they're
usually easy to befriend and have
valuable things to share with you are
you an older more mature people
yes
good remember you're the one that has to
live with your decisions for the rest of
your life don't make bad decisions for
anyone your life will only be as good as
the decisions you make so make sure your
decisions are truly yours thank you for
watching this how-to video for prageru
we hope you learned something new we'll
see you next time thank you
[Music]
that's right bob despite some violence
and destruction by some of our angrier
activists we're seeing mostly peaceful
protests
protesters are demanding that the police
be abolished
well clint these local activists want to
abolish the police they're claiming
systematic oppression and want the u.s
system torn down
what is going on things are so weird
right now i know
mrs calder gave us an assignment today
about being activists for justice
isn't mrs calder your math teacher yeah
we learn math but we spend a lot of time
learning about the stuff they talk about
in the news
that's weird isn't math class supposed
to be for math
why is everyone so angry
are are they burning a car
what does abolish even mean
that's enough
let's get to the bottom of this
the app you got it
abolish
abolitionist let's check this out
[Music]
hi are you an abolitionist i am
my name is frederick douglass welcome to
1852.
thanks i recognize you from a picture in
my u.s history textbook you have really
cool hair i'm layla that's my brother
leo we're trying to learn about activism
and abolishing things can you help us
well not to brag but i'm the perfect guy
for you to talk to
i'm the most famous activist in america
and i'm currently working on getting
something abolished abolish means to end
right what are you wanting to get rid of
i want slavery to end
at this time that you have come to visit
for half of the united states it is okay
for some people to own other people
make them work for many hours for no pay
and force them to do anything anytime
that's so unfair and horrible you're
right the sad fact is slavery has
existed everywhere in the world for
thousands of years but it's especially
disappointing here because america was
founded on the idea of freedom yet so
many black people are not free
are you a slave mr douglas i was but not
anymore i was born a slave and i was
taken from my family at the age of six
that's just so terrible how did you deal
with that it was very hard
and i was often sad
but i taught myself to read and write
and like i always say
knowledge is the pathway from slavery to
freedom
as a boy i was regularly beaten but when
i was 21
i had had enough and escaped to the
north
where slavery is against the law and
have never looked back
today i'm a free american fighting for
all to be free
how can there be slavery in america when
the founding fathers said that all men
are created equal yeah and i've heard
that some of those founding fathers
owned slaves what about that
children our founding fathers knew that
slavery was evil and wrong and they knew
that it would do terrible harm to the
nation
they wanted it to end but their first
priority was getting all 13 colonies to
unite as one country the southern
colonies were dependent on slave labor
and they wouldn't have joined a union
that had banned it are you okay with
that
i'm certainly not okay with slavery but
the founding fathers made a compromise
to achieve something great the making of
the united states
if they immediately outlawed slavery
after winning independence the southern
colonies would have formed their own
slave-owning country
our founders created a system they
thought would have slavery in gradually
well we're here in 1852 and america
america's been around for about 75 years
you're still trying to get slavery
abolished it doesn't sound like the
system the founding fathers set up is
working
on the contrary all the northern states
outlawed slavery by 1804 and buying
slaves from africa was outlawed for the
whole country four years later what's
taking the southern states so long to do
what's right
great streams are not easily turned from
channels worn deep in the course of ages
huh what i mean is sometimes things are
more complicated than they might seem
and complicated problems take time to
solve
when i have a complicated math problem
if i rush to solve it i make mistakes
leo ending slavery is such a bigger deal
than your math problems it certainly is
layla
along with independence and democracy
it's probably america's biggest deal
there was no real movement anywhere in
the world to abolish slavery before the
american founding
slavery was part of life all over the
world
it was america that began the
conversation to end it but leo is
correct that big problems need to be
approached very carefully have you kids
heard of william lloyd garrison no nope
he's an abolitionist like me
and he and i used to be friends but we
aren't any longer we don't agree how to
solve problems
william refuses all compromises demands
immediate change and if he doesn't get
what he wants he likes to set things on
fire sounds familiar
sounds like you know the type yeah we've
got that type in our time so you're
trying to work for change inside of the
american system
precisely layla our system is wonderful
and the constitution is a glorious
liberty document
we just need to convince enough
americans to be true to it and people
like garrison don't just want slavery
abolished but the whole american system
you are correct his approach is called
radical
that means a complete fundamental change
of everything that seems silly there are
so many amazing things about america
well your way is definitely better it's
the right way to get change i think so
but how are you so sure
spoiler alert in our time you're
considered an american hero and that
other guy isn't really known and double
spoiler alert also in our time all
americans are equally protected under
the law and have equal voting rights
regardless of race
does america have the same constitution
in your time as the one here in 1852 we
sure do
same one but with some changes called
amendments i knew the us constitution
would survive and allow for positive
change we even had a black president
two terms
so mr douglas do you think we should be
activists just not radical ones
leila your america where people are free
and everyone is equal under the law
sounds pretty great but no place is
perfect so it's good to listen to
activists who want to improve things
but they have to be willing to work
inside our system
and they have to understand that change
usually requires patience and compromise
then you might want to join their cars
but if they are radicals like garrison
you and your brother will be best served
to stay away
i think i'm just gonna worry about
surviving middle school for now that
sounds wonderful and you leo i'm just
gonna worry about being a kid
[Music]
welcome to craftery by prep prageru
resources for educators and parents
we've got crafts history and your
questions i'm jill and today we're going
to be doing something the whole family
can do together we're custom designing a
platter to put all of our favorite foods
and treats on for celebrating our
american holidays okay here's what
you'll need a large white porcelain
platter washed and dried acrylic paint
pens made especially for porcelain
and you will need an oven
you might need an adult's help with this
part okay but we're not gonna do just
any kind of design we're gonna decorate
this platter to celebrate our american
trinity values which are liberty in god
we trust and e floribus unum oh
we've got a question
wait what was that word that you just
said i didn't quite catch it yeah what
does it mean
ah i had a feeling you would ask that
you mean e pluribus unum yes
e pluribus unum is not english it's
latin which is a very old language that
not many people know how to speak
anymore
e pluribus unum means out of many
one
this saying was first created in 1776
when our 13 colonies became a nation and
it was one of america's very first
mottos now today it means that america
doesn't care how different we all might
be or where our families come from
because we are all here together
as one united isn't that awesome
so you're ready to make our platter now
make sure you help your mom or dad wash
and dry it before you start painting
okay
all right let's go first let's start
with the words e pluribus unum now i
always like to check my spelling and
practice before i paint it on the plate
so stick with me
with a plain scrap piece of paper
make sure
your spelling
is
correct i'm gonna focus on the red white
and blue today
shake a shake shake it shake shake it
what you can also do is very lightly
trace it in pencil on the platter
so that you know where you're gonna put
your words
and it doesn't matter if the writing
isn't perfect this is your creation with
your family so it's important that you
put your mark on it you know
next liberty
so a lot of countries promise liberty
but america is the only country that
lets people have the kind of liberty to
work as hard as we want to be as
successful as we can individually kind
of like this if you like to work hard
and i want to be lazy then you will most
likely become much more successful than
me and that's okay that's the kind of
liberty we have in america and it means
you can do anything
okay our last american trinity value in
god we trust
the fact that we can worship how we want
here in america is really special it's
not like that in a lot of other
countries and america was created with
god from the bible as our guide our
declaration of independence says
all people are endowed by their creator
with certain unalienable rights among
these are life liberty and the pursuit
of happiness in other words
god
gives us all our rights the right to
think pray and speak and no one can take
away our rights because they come from
god
now that we've got our words let's
finish decorating it this is where i
might need helping hands
[Music]
done almost
once you're finished drawing you're
gonna let the whole thing dry completely
don't touch it for a few hours then
you're gonna bake this in your oven with
nothing on it at 425 degrees fahrenheit
for about 30 minutes next turn off your
oven let it sit in there for 30 more
minutes then you take it out and then
you're done and that's it
easy peasy and super fun for the whole
family it's also a one-of-a-kind work of
art to put all of your snacks fruit
independence day hot dogs cookies
anything you want on it the next time
your family celebrates one of our
american holidays
we hope you had fun if you've got ideas
or questions for our next craftery send
them my way
and remember to send us your pictures
too keep crafting keep learning and keep
celebrating land of the free and the
home of the brave bye guys
okay
who's got hot dogs
cookies
muffins
you guys i'm hungry
it's the spring of 1775. you're a
promising young blacksmith in the
american colonies life is hard but
getting better your boss is trading his
usual glaring for actual compliments not
that son and a girl named mary begins
expressing interest you're pretty sure
your heart clutters and you lose
yourself from the thought of a happy
ever app like that
look at the news there's talk of war
people in your town are tired of taxes
and tyranny it's time to fight they say
defend your country they say we will
probably not die they don't say
so after a little healthy pressure you
enlist in the army and grab your musket
and march to a field but the field is
full of red soldiers pointing their guns
at you it hits you that this may be the
last thing you ever see no more
blacksmith no more merry
you raise your musket your hands are
sweating and you're feeling sick when
all of a sudden you smell pizza rolls
and remember oh yeah your life is
actually really good because it's a 21st
century and you don't actually have to
fight in a war for the freedom of a
brand new country but a lot of people
did fight and a lot of people did
actually die the sacrifices they made
were very real and it's those sacrifices
that we are benefiting from today today
on dbhs3 we are going to look at the
american revolution and the sacrifices
made by those who chose to fight for
independence against the greatest power
on earth
i'm lem and i'm daniel and this is tvh
history it's 1776 and the founders just
signed the declaration of independence a
document declaring their independence
from great britain making them their own
country the united states of america
it's monumental it's exciting but it's
terrifying declaring their independence
is an act of treason against the
greatest empire on earth and when you
commit treason
you die or at least you're supposed to
signing the declaration of independence
was ultimately the easy part now the
signers and the colonies would have to
face the full wrath of the king of
britain king george iii who also
happened to have some control issues
many believe there was no way the
americans could possibly win but they
believed the ideas of equality and
liberty and the declaration of
independence were worth fighting for
even dying for i mean like think about
that they were willing to die for what
they believed in and many of them would
never even see the fruits of what they
were sacrificing for over the course of
the revolutionary war 6 800 americans
would die in battle and 17 000 would die
from disease with another 6 100 wounded
and 20 000 taken prisoner it would be a
time of great sacrifice and their
commitment to the cause would be put to
the test while many patriots sacrificed
for the cause of the revolution and
played important roles there were
several who made considerable
contributions toward the cause of
independence patriots like george
washington john adams thomas jefferson
and benjamin franklin well washington
led troops on the field of battle
adams and franklin led the push for
independence in congress franklin used
his wit in charming persuasion while
adams played the role of casting
director oh george i knew you'd be
perfect for this puppy
not only did adams nominate washington
to serve as commander-in-chief of the
continental army he also suggested that
thomas jefferson write the draft for the
declaration of independence but i want
to ride the horse no no no you write the
declaration i want george on the horse
and jefferson a brilliant writer was the
ideal choice
adams franklin jefferson and others
would travel across the atlantic ocean
to europe to secure foreign support god
adams you still smell like a fish
their efforts paid off in 1778 when the
french government agreed to an alliance
with the americans against the british
historians believe that without french
support america might not have actually
won independence they provided weapons
leadership training and most importantly
a naval blockade that hurt britain's
ability to support their troops like
most wars the revolutionary war had its
highs and lows after washington's army
suffered a disastrous defeat in new york
in the summer of 1776 the americans
appeared to be on the brink of complete
failure
aha
but a few months later when things were
beginning to look hopeless washington
had a wild idea on christmas day he and
his men heroically crossed the icy
delaware river and won victories in
trenton and princeton breathing new life
into the cause
many more battles would be fought some
of which ended in victory and some of
which ended in defeat the americans won
a huge victory at the battle of saratoga
a moment historians consider a major
turning point in the war one which
helped convince france to support the
cause
still thousands of americans would die
in camps during harsh winters especially
in valley forge pennsylvania hey man i'm
cold
at times the continental army ran out of
money and clothing forcing soldiers to
march on the snow barefoot
washington and his men would also suffer
a painful betrayal in 1780 when one of
his top generals benedict arnold
abandoned the americans and switched
over to the enemy sake despite these
hardships washington and his army
endured in 1781 everything came together
a large british force under general
charles cornwallis was camped in
yorktown virginia and the americans and
the french made a sneaky plan to defeat
cornwallis the french navy trapped him
from being able to escape by sea
and washington's army captured him on
land
on october 19 1781 cornwallis
surrendered and it was this defeat at
yorktown that convinced the british
government to give up they knew they
probably just couldn't win at this point
you know throughout 1782 and 1783 john
adams benjamin franklin and a few other
founders negotiated a treaty with
britain to end the war but they were
sore losers and refused to pose for this
painting
bad even though the war looked like it
was ending some in america wondered if
their country could even survive without
a king the americans may have been
fighting against a king but many felt
the only way to govern such a big
country was to have one person ruling
over everything
one officer in the continental army even
suggested that george washington become
that king since he had won the war hey
george
why don't you do it
washington however had spent the entire
war fighting against the idea of a king
he was willing to stick to his belief
that the people could govern themselves
so washington did the unthinkable after
the peace treaty of 1783 he stunned the
world by resigning his commission as
commander-in-chief of the united states
bidding his troops farewell giving up
all of his power and returning home to
his farm at mount vernon virginia no
more posing
okay maybe one more pose in doing so the
leader of the american revolution proved
to the world that in this new nation the
people would govern themselves by 1783
the united states of america had fully
won its independence but now the
question was how could they stay united
the founders were in a predicament they
needed a national government to keep
them together and make decisions for the
country as a whole but they didn't like
the idea of centralized power they were
afraid that having a national government
would eventually lead to tyranny so they
made a brilliant document that allowed
for a national government but greatly
restricted its power this document is
called the constitution it lays out how
the national government will work what
it can do and more importantly what it
cannot do it gives the government the
power it needs without giving it enough
power to become tyrannical the
constitution turned out to be such an
effective rule book for governance that
we're still using it today more than two
centuries later the united states would
survive another war with great britain a
civil war two world wars and a lot of
dramatic social changes the ideals of
the founding fathers would inspire
people across the world to launch
revolutions in their own countries or
come to america for a better life it's
true that america is not a perfect
country yet for all its flaws america
has been a beacon of hope for millions
of oppressed people across the globe
today more than 240 years after its
birth americans can still be inspired by
the words all men are created equal and
appreciate everyone who helped make
those words a reality question what
would your life look like today without
the sacrifices of the american

christmas emoji and you can tell us why
we want you to post it we will give you
a shout out in the next video speaking
of shout outs we need to figure out who
we're shouting out this time and so it's
time for our research
today we give a shout out to abigail
robins congratulations abigail roberts
it turns out you actually had the wrong
answer but you had the most impressive
wrong answer of all the wrong answers so
we're giving you a shout out because
guess what nobody got the right answer
not an official shout out it's more of
like you got it wrong
the right answer was actually a firmer
emoji with king george iii
why he had a nickname
farmer george
not george washington show them what
they would have won if they would have
gotten right they would have won a shout
out no they wouldn't want to respect
john adams you still smell like a fish
sorry i laughed don't laugh at me it's
not funny
worst crew ever i'm just gonna use the
best career ever
want george wearing his pants
i don't know i didn't read what we're
doing
do you want to celebrate your birthdays
alone
is the idea of having a job you love
boring to you i love this job
i'm bored
then don't watch this video but if for
some crazy reason the idea of having
actual friends and jobs that you love
and meaningful relationships sounds
great to you you need to master the art
of having conversations with real people
four tips is all you need to start
having conversations like a pro
[Music]
number one practice good body language
actions speak louder than words and body
language is no exception just look at
these precious gems this person wants to
hit you
this guy is hiding something
this person is insecure and timid
and this guy
a too many fiber one bars get the idea
if your body language is telling people
things you'd be embarrassed to say with
your mouth don't worry with a little
practice you'll soon be a master keep
your hands away from your face and hair
don't play with your fingers keep your
phone out of your hands stand up
straight and smile and make sure you
look them in the eye it's weird when you
don't let people look at your eyeballs
number two come with a learning mindset
treat each person you find like a gold
mine if you dig deep enough you're gonna
find some golden nuggets
everybody has gold nuggets inside them
whether it's a job interview or you're
just stuck in line at a grocery store
you can always learn something we're
talking about deep life lessons and
wisdom which is one reason it's a good
idea to talk to adults believe it or not
adults actually want to talk to you they
want to know how you feel about things
and what you have to say but more
importantly they have really valuable
things to share with you like how to
avoid mistakes they made when they were
your age
the more you can learn from others
mistakes the less mistakes you have to
make yourself if you're not for me
then you are my enemy only as this would
deal in absolutes
and who knows maybe you won't have to
get third degree burns from the pit of
lava you fell into when your legs got
cut off in a lightsaber battle because
you were trying to use the dark side to
save your wife from certain death
number three ask and listen people love
to talk about themselves so just ask
them thoughtful questions and let them
talk side note if nerves and awkwardness
are holding you back from having
conversations with people you don't know
don't fear with this one tip you can
kiss the awkward turtle goodbye
that was awkward what you need to know
is that the more you focus on yourself
the more nervous and awkward you're
gonna feel so the solution is focus on
the other person instead of yourself and
the more you do this the more that
nervousness and awkwardness will begin
vanishing it's like magic but not it
really helps to have good questions
ready to ask questions like what are you
interested in what are you interested in
or what do you do in your free time so
what do you do in your free time or are
you lactose intolerant
okay maybe not that when you're not
asking questions it's really good to
sprinkle in words that show that you're
engaged in the conversation such as the
following the aha
the aha
the smile plus
the no way bro no way bro
no way
the smiley random high five for no
reason yeah
[Music]
the affirming but overly zealous comment
i'm really enjoying this overly amazing
conversation right now it's amazing
you're a great pal to talk to okay yeah
i like talking to you you get the idea
just make sure you open up about
yourself and share personal things in
return just don't be too vulnerable stay
away from anything related to biological
abnormalities or diseases like your foot
bunions leprosy or hot dog fingers
but anything else is on the table number
four land the plane when you sense
you're running out of things to say
don't just stop abruptly and
leave like flying a plane try to find a
good place to land the conversation wrap
it up by saying that you enjoy talking
and getting to meet them and that you
hope to talk again soon i enjoyed
talking it was good to meet you i look
forward to talking to you again soon
even if you don't
and if it went really well ask for their
number so you can keep the conversation
going later this is how you turn a
stranger into a friend and even if you
don't become friends you just never know
what that connection might do for your
future quest to get to middle earth and
throw the ring in the volcano
either way it's a win after exchanging
contacts take a deep breath and stand up
straight now walk with confidence into
the sunset
you did it you had a successful
conversation and guess what it feels
good but don't stop there there are many
more friends to be made stories to be
heard and lessons to be learned so go
out there and find the golden nuggets
there's only one left
i hope this is the final take this is
