Welcome to another episode of the Epic Family Road Trip, the Empty Nest Edition.
Hi I'm Peter and I'm Carol. In 2016 we sold almost everything we owned.
We took our three teenage kids on an epic family road trip around North America and the world.
We knew we could always make more money but we could never get back time.
As a family we valued time more than money and experiences more than things.
Along the way our kids grew up into awesome young adults while developing the entrepreneurial
skills and life experiences that have set them on their own adventurous paths.
In our new chapter as Empty Nesters our adventure continues both off the grid at our cabin in the
wilderness and on the road exploring distant places in our well-equipped expedition truck.
So in last week's video we left Port Hardy after getting new batteries and we worked our way down
here all the way to Port Alice and around the inlet and in this area we camped at the waterfall.
This is the spot we camped in the winter with the kids and some local folks were just relaxing by
the waterfall but we'll camp here tonight and then we'll head out to Side Bay tomorrow
where you can drive on the beach it's gonna be amazing.
So check out this camp spot, pretty amazing.
Well this camp spot is gonna be hard to beat.
We're gonna open our door and have a waterfall right out the door, pretty epic.
But I'm thinking we stay just for a little while.
That's the strike of time, darling stay for a little longer while I hope your time will wait.
So just rest your head upon my shoulder nothing I'll end.
It's colder but the days are not over yet.
Good morning guys from another incredible camp spot here on the island.
You can see the waterfall in the background, what a sound to fall asleep to.
I had an amazing sleep and then making coffee right beside a waterfall you cannot beat it.
So I'm just gonna do up some coffee here and some breakfast and then we're gonna head
down the road.
I mean I know you'd probably stay here for a week and so would we if we could but
we'll just have to keep coming back.
But for now yeah we've got to carry on to keep going down the trail.
We do have a mission to try to get to a place called
Side Bay which folks have told us about where you can drive on the beach and camp on the beach
and that sounds good to us.
So we have the basic directions there and we should be able to find it today
for this particular spot because I'm sure you want us to give you the coordinates but
as a promise to the locals we aren't going to advertise this spot because it's a beautiful
kind of hidden spot that the locals like to enjoy on their own
and they don't want it becoming commercialized or too many people being here and
you know things changing.
It's so wild and clean and perfect.
That doesn't mean you can't find this location doing a little bit of research.
So that's half the fun anyway is if you have to search around and you happen upon a place like
this so if you're on the island and you do some research if you ever go to Port Alice
you can ask the locals or you can look around yourself and you'll find it.
This is the Champion medium roast that Barry Bonds gave us at the show and we're
finally getting a chance to try it out.
Champion is medium coffee all organic
and I can't wait because I want your taste test.
If you don't like it hey god bless me and god bless y'all but when you do love this
order on.
I'm gonna try another medium roast maybe we'll try the dark roast he gave as well
and let you know how we like it.
We'll make sure to put a link below for you.
So this is called Halftime and it's the dark roast and both of these are organic
ethically sourced coffee so the good stuff.
It's a really nice dark roast.
No aftertaste like that bitterness just a solid dark coffee really good.
Yeah smooth delicious.
Good job Barry and team.
Nice thing about this coffee as well most of the proceeds go towards getting kids into
sports so a really good charity.
Check them out we have a link below.
It's a lot lighter.
It's your style though.
It's really strong.
I like the dark.
This one I love right until the sun hits.
Yeah there's no mosquitoes here yesterday in the hot sun but first thing in the morning
there's a few but they're kind of sleepy island mosquitoes kind of laid back mosquitoes they
it's so slow you can just catch them.
They're not aggressive like you know in the woods in Ontario.
They think about it for a while and they're like hmm I wonder if I want to.
I guess so you have a lot of time so you probably won't get bit.
They're laid back island mosquitoes.
We're not looking at the waterfall we're looking at our truck I mean look at that.
So
our first coffee this morning we had inside the truck while watching the boys new video
so Adventure Guys posted it and Dan Van Strom posted super entertaining videos we really
enjoyed getting all caught up with what's going on at back at the lake and I think you'd
enjoy them so make sure you check them out the links are below for both of their channels
and yeah nice to see Lando again if we can't have them in person second next best thing
is watching him play at the island with the and have fun with the boys so yeah check out
their channels they're doing some really incredible stuff Pete's working on a sailboat Dan's restoring
an old cabin and there's a lot of preparation and a lot of work that goes into that whole thing so
um yeah check them out. We're going to fill the uh water supply in the truck
for the first time using our brand new Guzzle H2O unit um we've used it to fill water bottles but
it's for 30 gallons it takes probably an hour it is pumping up from quite a a deep
pool here so I hope I hope it has enough pressure to to pump up the hill but let's give it a try
so this is the hose I believe it's 30 feet this is the entire unit right here the pump
and filtration unit and everything all in one handy box and then right here we have the
intake hose and then this one is for filling water bottles so the orange side here is the intake
and it's color-coded to make it easy and then the blue side is the
flow of water and blue to blue so that's incredible despite the drop and everything
it's pumping away I'm going to take a look at it here so that's good cold drinking water
purified well that is a game changer for us I mean we can get unlimited water here that little unit
runs off of a battery pack which is built into it so it's just you grab that one case an intake
hose and an out outflow and it's all you need pretty incredible so we're going to let that
fill up our 30 gallons we're at about 20 percent of water after doing dishes and taking showers
we'll let you know when that's full but now that we don't have to go into town and look for water
we can stay out in the wilderness a lot longer what an amazing system thanks guzzle h2o if you
guys want to check them out I'll put a link below it's a pretty neat unit so the truck is full
I'm going to go turn it off because I don't want to waste that pure water but it took about
only about 35 minutes because it was at 20 already but I think an empty tank would fill in
in just under 40 minutes which is amazing fully loaded up with water we are now heading out to
side bay there are two ways to get there the most common route which is a wider and less rough road
although still challenging is indicated here on the onexoff road app
this route can take over two hours traversing some pretty steep and winding logging roads
today however we are challenging ourselves taking a much narrower and steeper route which was sent
to us by a friend Casey from Casey 250 and Sean from the story till now we had attempted this
route in the winter a few years back with both jeeps but we got turned back due to incoming
snow in the higher elevations we're doing some backcountry driving here on some pretty epic
logging trails but it looks like we can see a fair bit of snow blowing in and we want to
get out of the high elevations before that happens we've been stuck in stuck in snow before
and we learned our lesson so we're uh we just turned around we're gonna get back down to the
lower elevations and see what happens either way this is a pretty epic place to drive
anyway enjoy the scenery we're taking you for quite the ride
this time we are determined to put the truck to the test and go all the way through to the coast
two bears so far just they seem like uh yearlings fairly young but they're out enjoying berries i
partially built the log cabin structure here we're just gonna walk around it just looks so
beautiful take some pictures for dan i don't want to bother him but with a starlink and everything
nice now we uh mark this down i'm gonna get out my onyx and mark this spot because this is
amazing it feels like we're on dick printikey's twin lakes really does yeah you can't get more
we've driven now for what two hours or two hours from we were already an hour from or half an hour
from the little village and there's nothing out here there's no villages nothing just logging
roads and here's an amazing camp spot so we're one here i like that guy's site even better
we just gotta go past the lake and then run so if you want to um go high up in the mountains
and wind through shelf roads follow this trail when we're done it'll make a solid line and then
on the way out we'll take that trail that someone else marked for us perfect all right let's get
going we still have a ways this is so neat for me to see just imagining how daniel's is going to
look like one day hopefully it's on a lake like this yeah this is just oh this really reminds me
get up high because we're not sure where the tide comes in but we know it comes in quite far
and we don't want to be camped in the water tonight but yeah we'll find a spot where we
other people have possibly camped in the past and i think we'll look at the tide charts and
levels out you want me to put a rock up in front are you good i think that's pretty level we could
kitchen roll looks like zeros all around sweet yeah four zeros let's get our chairs and put on
huskavarnas but they were just whooping it up when they arrived here they're so excited
one guy hit this hit the soft sand and fell over but made me miss the boys and i'll tell you what
we are going to give them these uh gps tracks on onyx they have to come here in their bikes
camp spot last night we were definitely far enough away from the tide i think the tide came up to
somewhere about here last night and then it retreats to where it currently is
so we just fell asleep to the sound of the waves and some fog rolled in it's absolutely beautiful
we're gonna spend the day here because it's so peaceful and quiet and make some seafood carol's
famous seafood sandwiches and that'll be on uh simple meals and if you see the meals that we
you've been watching on our videos to see the entire process of how it's cooked and baked and
put together and the recipe and all that go to simple meals i'll put a link below
well there you have it a fresh cod sandwich on sourdough with dill and lemons and capers
a shallot and a perfect homemade aioli sauce
