Mikhael is a plant-friend of mine for years. He is what you would consider a next-level/advanced plant parent. We meant to explore an annual event called FLONA at Taman Lapangan Banteng in Jakarta Indonesia together. When I met him, I asked if he would be up to have this experienced filmed, he said yes! And the rest is history.
We casually talk about our collection, what we are looking out for, plants that stood out, wishlist plants, and all the nerdy fun stuff plant friends talk about when they go shopping!
#plant # garden
So, I was explained by the shopkeeper that this is his original hybrid.
How cool is that?
So, this is, I think, an Argeria with something else.
This is like a local type Peperomia.
So, this is one of his original cross.
Does this have a name?
Come on, name it now.
Sir, what's your name?
My name is Pacecem.
What?
Pacecem.
Cecem, right?
So, Peperomia Cecem.
Cecem.
C-E-C-E-P.
Okay.
Interesting.
Cute.
So, it is a vining type Peperomia.
I guess it's interesting.
Hi, guys.
My name is Sean.
I'm a horse plant enthusiast from Jakarta, Indonesia.
I'm accompanied by Michael here.
His Instagram is going to be somewhere on the screen.
And we are at Taman Lapangan Bah Teng at an event called Flona.
So, it's a lot of garden and ornamental plants.
We might see some rare plants, although it's not as prevalent, not as premier.
So, we're going to mostly be browsing through plants and doing a bit of shopping.
And come along with us, and you'll find out more.
I've been here before.
We did film one or two episodes here.
And I think every year, they got better and better.
Of course.
It was from 2012, I think.
Okay.
And then they kind of died down a bit, I think.
And then they came back with vengeance after COVID.
Gorgeous bromeliad.
I'm desert-scaping my front yard, but this is some really cool ideas.
Agave, Euphorbia.
And these are like some blooming cactus over there.
A lot of succulents.
Super cute.
These calm plants get my attention.
Look at all these agonimous.
They're not in the best shape possible.
But actually, if you care for them, they can come back really quickly.
Three pots for a hundred thousand.
Not so bad.
Is this a lotus delight?
This is not a lotus delight, right?
No, not a lotus delight.
Oh, this is like the pink lipstick.
Yeah.
But it looks very similar.
It's a bit faded.
So, Michael, what are you into these days?
I'm more into trees somehow.
Trees?
Trees.
Like olive trees.
Magnolias.
Oh, man.
Boswellias.
Like that.
But do you have room for them?
Do you live in a...
No.
I grow them indoor.
Okay.
Under some grow lights.
But yeah, just trying to keep them small, I guess.
Oh, that's cute.
Okay.
Do you live in a house or apartment now?
I remember you moved.
I live in a house now.
Okay.
So, you do have some landed area to grow some things.
No, not at all.
I grow them in my bedroom.
Okay.
Everything that you see here, basically, are full sun plants.
I'm actually looking for them, but I'm really broke right now.
So, I'm not going to get some of these.
But this one, it just says Malati Wangis, like some kind of sweet.
Oh, yeah.
It smells so good.
Really?
Yeah.
You have to try.
Oh, yeah.
It smells...
Oh, damn.
It smells really good.
So, this is the kind of hibiscus.
I remember I propagated a lot in the past.
They are the most pest-prone plant I ever owned.
It's just so pest-prone.
But it is cute here.
It grows like this in a single vine.
But I think it blooms like a hibiscus.
I don't know what the flower looks like.
Mine never bloom.
But they grow like that.
But if you keep pruning it over, it can look quite beautiful.
But I think it's grafted here.
Is it grafted?
Oh, it might be.
This is the vine.
I'm following the vine.
I'm following it down.
It's grafted right here, I guess.
Okay.
Like this meeting point here?
Yeah, there's a separation there.
Okay.
Cute.
Interesting.
Yeah, I'm not familiar with grafting at all.
But yeah, this is how they look like.
And actually, if you keep cutting them, they bush up a lot.
You can see here, they're already trying to put out the secondary vine.
So this is a plant that has a strong inclination to bush out.
But again, pests love them too much.
This is so cute.
Do you know what this is?
No idea, right?
Cute.
And this one, I did not know that they are Stoloniferous.
This is cute.
They put out little dingy beads.
So I guess this is the more affordable succulent area.
I'm actually really in the market to get some.
I have decided to pick one of these up
because we're doing like a little coral area in my front yard.
There, I just happened to pick one up.
This one looks interesting because it's got this spiral type shape.
Let's see.
I think it's calling out to me.
We don't want to spend too much time because we don't have all evening.
But this looks okay.
Yeah.
So this is the mature form of what I got.
So I guess you can get like this.
If you give it time.
They say it takes about three years to get to this size.
I did.
It kind of called out to me.
The minute I walked in the store, I kind of like wanted to check this out.
We thought it could be a Tradescantia because of the growth habit.
But it's a Calicia.
Calicia.
I guess they're actually kind of related or not.
They're kind of related.
Maybe.
Cute.
But this is only 20,000.
I really, I might get one.
But they said not to give it too much water.
I can imagine if it's like lying on the ground and if it's wet,
it will rot.
For sure.
So every time I pass by a plant show, I always like adore these.
Because they look like the Super Mario Brothers.
Oh, yeah.
Or something like that.
So these can grow arms off the body like that.
So I might get one if the price is okay.
I got this one, a Crestula ovata.
I've got one that is like dying really hard.
So I might as well just get one.
It's not that expensive.
But they really hate water, this one.
Guys, did you know that the flowers of the Crestula ovata look like this?
This is so cute.
And actually their stem at the green form is quite beautiful with that bronze color.
And that flower really goes well together.
I just bought the variegated.
But now that I see this, I should have probably gotten the green form.
This is really pretty.
So I'm at Denila Magnifica.
They're so hard to find here.
This one is a bit expensive.
I think when I saw them in Singapore, they were like...
They sold them in smaller pots, but they were very healthy.
They're already flowering.
And the prices were much better than this.
But I think people are just not growing them out as much here.
That's why they're so expensive.
They have beautiful leaves, gorgeous leaves, gorgeous flowers.
And I know that...
I read somewhere they bloom a lot.
They bloom a lot.
Yeah, they're always in bloom.
And this is from the Philippines, which is not far.
And the flowers are cute.
So this is the bracts and then the little flower inside.
Cute.
This is crazy.
They have braided this cacti.
I have this and I killed it.
I overwatered it and it rotted really bad.
But this one is braided like crazy.
And this is extremely spiky.
So you really want to wear gloves when you handle these.
So what is your wishlist plan?
If you can bring anything home from this...
I want this thing.
Really?
Yeah.
Oh my god, look at that.
This one is so huge.
And it takes them a while to get this big, right?
It takes a long time.
This is beautiful.
Is this for sale or is this just here in the landscape?
It's just for the landscape.
I think it just lives here.
It's permanently.
Nice.
It is quite beautiful.
It's flowering now.
Oh, yeah.
Actually, this is not even the full size.
Not even the full size.
Yeah, this is still a juvenile form.
They can get really, really big.
Look at the bees.
They're busy at work.
Maybe you might find some seeds there soon if you...
Look at this Hoya in full bloom.
I think it's a Hoya multiflora, but I could be wrong.
It's one of the terrestrial Hoyas.
It's beautiful.
There's a silver dragon and also behind is...
What's the...
Dragon scale.
Okay, so back in the pandemic, I used to sell a lot of these.
But my dragon scale was not this color.
Mine was a little bit lighter.
But then it's got beautiful underside.
And I just killed mine entirely.
So now I see an opportunity here.
This is 60,000.
This is 40,000.
So I might get both.
Yeah, you should.
Yeah.
Okay.
But I might kill them.
And Peperomia incana, I killed it too.
This is...
They really require constant environment, like constant care.
You cannot overwater it.
It's not hard to take care of.
How do you spell it?
T-H-I-E
Okay.
L-E-I
All right.
So you got it last week.
Last week, yeah.
Okay.
We don't know yet.
Is it easy to grow or not?
I think it's easy.
I put it outdoor, full sun.
Oh my God, full sun?
Full sun.
And it's not burned?
It's not burned at all.
Okay, I might get this smaller one.
It's...
How much did you say it was, like 30?
30.
30,000.
It's already got like a little vine coming off it.
I don't know why this became like a shopping trip.
I was thought it was some cute begonias.
But I noticed in Indonesia,
I don't know about you guys overseas watching this,
but in Indonesia, begonias come in trends.
So sometimes you see like this begonia variety here.
And it would dominate the market for about three to six months.
And then something else will take over the next few months.
And you will not see some of these again.
I don't know why that is.
But yeah, it's beautiful too.
But I don't think this is easy.
Oh, it's pepperoni.
Pepperoni.
This is a genus that we largely have forgotten, actually.
And this is interesting too.
Looks like the argeria, but it's the silver.
I guess I'm bringing this begonia iron cross with me.
There's actually two vines in here in one pot.
So I was explained by the shopkeeper,
and this is his original hybrid.
How cool is that?
So this is, I think, an argeria with something else.
This is like a local type pepperonia.
So this is one of his original cross.
Does this have a name?
Come on, name it now.
What's your name, sir?
My name is Mr. Cecep.
Mr. Cecep.
Mr. Cecep?
So it's pepperoni cecep.
C-E-C-E-P.
Okay, interesting.
Cute.
So it is a vining type pepperonia.
I guess it's interesting.
So what spurred you to buy this one?
Is it fuzzy?
It's fuzzy and it has a blue sheen to it.
Beautiful.
Yeah, there's three.
He said that there's three.
Yeah, there's three.
So this is an interesting different Bacchia
that we've discovered here.
Got beautiful stem, look at that.
So he said this is from Español.
I guess it's from Spain.
Is that what it is?
Spain.
But from what I know,
I think different Bacchias are from South America.
South America, I'm sorry.
Yeah, we're not sure.
If you know what this is, let us know.
Syngonium.
Syngonium Frosted Heart.
This is actually my favorite Syngonium.
You need some light to bring out the frostiness.
If you grow it in low light,
they become really dull.
I'm really in the market for it.
It grows like this, but it is a Syngonium.
It's got an interesting growth pattern.
I wonder how much this is.
How much is this?
40.
40?
Let's go.
Look at all these plants that I got.
Two full bags.
So I got this little baby Adenium.
They're actually desert rose.
Perfect for my front yard.
And then this is what the flowers
will potentially look like.
And then they form this crazy caudex.
It's going to take a while though to get there.
Look at all these varieties of Adeniums.
This is insane.
Okay, so we ended up shopping
way more than we filmed.
But I just wanted to quickly show you
the general kind of plant types
they have in this market.
So a lot of the booths have Agonimas.
Of course in the front you'll see
the full sun loving plants.
But also a lot of booths sell Calatheas,
Peperomas, a lot of Begonias.
I think these are all like shade loving plants.
So we see them often in a lot of the shops.
So we didn't get a chance to show you
each of them up close.
But this is what I guess
this market is predominantly carrying.
Look at this all.
Cute Platyceriums.
And this one.
Oh man.
This is Swilling Kiegen.
So cute.
I-J-E-N, yeah.
Is it local, do you know?
This is local.
Mutation, yeah.
This is mutation and straw.
Beautiful.
But this is also very expensive, yes.
Quite expensive.
But the small one, it's quite cheap there.
I think we saw him at Floyd.
He had a booth here.
We talked with him before.
So this is his booth, yeah?
This is his booth.
Oh, that's awesome.
There's so many small ones there.
Weird.
So these are the babies.
They all have their names.
So this is Escargarden.
We're looking into each.
We featured here a few times in the channel.
I don't think she's here today.
She's got some interesting plants.
Usually.
This is only 50,000 per pot.
Syngonium.
What is this called even?
Milk Confetti.
Bromeliads.
Variegated Skindapsus.
Cute.
Hello.
How are you?
I'm good.
I have this.
Okay, this is a...
What is this?
Don't you know?
Yes.
Ant Fern.
This is like anopteris lomarioides.
Okay.
So it's from Sulawesi.
So it's actually...
Of course.
Yes.
You know this already.
But it is a fern.
It is.
Look at this fiddlehead.
Right?
This is a fern.
I don't bring much ferns because like the first week we're here, it's so hot.
And some of the ferns are...
They're naked, yeah.
Pyrocea.
Yes.
Pyrocea longifolia prestata.
Yeah.
This one.
This is our babies.
And then...
Look at this cute nymph right here.
I grow from spores.
Okay.
So this is actually Microsorum pumtatum.
But...
So usually they don't have the veins.
Yeah.
But this one has like a really embossed veins.
And I don't know.
It's just...
It's been two years.
From a spore to this.
Yes.
But it takes a long time.
Yeah, it does.
But I only brought a few.
Okay.
So I'm guessing this is like your corner here.
All these ferns.
Yeah, because if I put it in there...
Okay, interesting.
Where is it from?
It's not actually from here.
I think it's from South America.
If I'm not wrong.
Okay.
Okay, so Icha brought this in again.
Yes.
When she was in Bangkok, she bought this.
Is it easy?
You can model with it.
It's working.
Well, I suggest you have like a really cold environment.
Because sometimes they are in high altitude.
So, yeah.
I don't recommend this if you don't have a terrarium in Jakarta.
So I brought many blue ferns.
Okay.
Okay, this is Microsorum siemensis.
Okay, I think it's from Thailand.
Yes, yes.
So you can see all the difference.
This is...
Some of the people say that this is a hybrid between Thailandicum and siemensis.
Oh.
So...
Okay.
Yeah, we can put...
You can see in here, this is the Thailandicum.
So they have a narrower front.
Yeah, yeah.
Interesting.
So you guys have a few Thailandicums growing.
Yeah.
They're actually quite easy.
And once you...
I followed your advice, and it's not so bad.
This is Ithanas formosa from Papua.
Oh, that's pretty.
Yeah.
Is it easy?
Sorry.
Well, it's...
It needs a lot of humidity.
And you have to water it every day.
Okay.
Yeah.
It sounds easy.
It's easy.
It is easy for me.
But some people struggle with it.
Because...
Sometimes if you forgot to water them, they will just...
And they won't come back.
Sometimes they come back.
Sometimes they do.
What is this, Niwan?
This is actually Schizia digitata.
Uh-huh.
It's a fern?
It's a fern.
It's actually really special because the substrate...
They don't like nutrients.
So actually with Nepenthes, I use the same...
It's like a carnivorous...
Yeah.
And then I've been growing this for a year.
So the first time the fiddleheads emerge until this,
it takes me a year.
Oh, wow.
And this is the fertile frond.
Okay.
So it will shape like a hand like that.
Will it get bushy usually or not?
Yeah.
Okay.
Yeah, but it takes a lot of effort.
Okay, but I mean...
I find this amusing.
My first question is why?
Is it coming from an interesting place?
Is it endangered?
No, it's from Borneo.
That's exotic.
It's exotic, yeah.
And I just...
I don't know.
I found it.
Don't you find it beautiful?
It's amusing.
Some people are like,
are you sure this is a fern?
Yes, it's a fern.
But it shows us that diversity is quite magnificent.
So this is what I bought from Singapore.
From Singapore, right?
From Singapore.
There was a plant event last weekend.
Tell us what...
Okay, this one first.
What is this one?
This one, adiantum linulatum.
Okay.
Linulatum.
Do you have any luck with caring for adiantum?
Me personally, no.
But I've tried.
Okay.
And there's one still alive.
Good.
If I can give you a tip,
don't throw it away.
If it dies,
just keep growing it.
It will come back.
Unless you critically die,
like critically dry,
or something bad happens,
or you pour wine over it,
you might die.
Okay, next one.
Next one.
This is...
Variegated.
It's almost like...
It's not the variegated.
It's like...
Because I think the variegated,
this is something else.
This is extremely uncommon.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's true.
Okay, next one here.
Passiflora.
Something with a P again.
What is it?
I came across it in Thailand.
There's like a large plant.
Trifasciata.
Trifasciata?
Yeah, maybe.
Yeah, that sounds...
Possibly.
This is like a T-Rex claw.
Yeah, T-Rex claw.
And then this one.
Oh, I know what this is.
This is the...
Wait, is it a cactus?
No.
No, this is osmanthus.
Oh, osmanthus is the thing that we eat?
Or no?
The thing that we drink.
Yeah.
Oh, that's cute.
Okay.
Well, good luck with this.
Thank you.
Show me your happy face.
All right, guys.
We've got to go on to the next destination.
But I thought this mirror is a good way to say bye to everyone.
We've got a lot of things that we're going to put in our cars.
And I guess, thank you so much for watching.
Thank you.
Michael, his Instagram is somewhere on the screen.
Okay.
Bye.
