This time I visited Mizumoto Park! Finally all of the winter birds have started returning to Japan, so let's see what I saw!
For the benefit of my family back home, I decided to record this vlog in my native language English!
Thank you for understanding!
Hello everyone, this is Hanatori Channel.
So, there was a little green finch perched on top of the tree very far away.
There were so many of these birds.
Look, the fisherman has a little friend.
This is a little egret, in Japanese, kosagi.
He must be waiting for the fisherman to catch something.
Then maybe he's going to try and take it.
Oh look, it's a little green.
These birds are so numerous in my local park.
And this one is a tufted duck.
These are two females, I think.
I couldn't believe how many wigeons there were in this park today.
So many of them.
And this is the first time I saw a black-headed gull this season, since last winter.
It was really nice to see them again.
I love the red beak and the red legs.
So many of the winter birds are finally back in Japan, including the great crested green.
Look how long that beak is.
Such a majestic looking bird.
It seems the wigeon are kind of chasing each other.
I'm not sure what kind of ritual this is.
Is this part of territory, or is this part of the mating ritual?
I'm not sure.
I remember when I took this really nice strike picture in the autumn leaves.
There was a pond with so many fallen leaves, and the great egret was wading through them, looking for something to eat.
I was really surprised to see this one.
I didn't expect to see these in a park in Tokyo.
These are siskin.
There's so many siskin in my home country, Scotland.
They're so cute.
They're much smaller than I remembered to.
So I had to zoom quite a lot to take them.
They seem to be eating some seeds inside cones.
They had lots of seeds stuck to their beak.
They looked kind of messy.
And I found a bunch of wigeon who had decided to come onto the grass to feed.
It seems wigeon do this quite a lot.
I'm not sure are they eating insects, or are they eating grass itself?
But there was a big crowd of people watching them.
So next I moved on to the pond area of the park.
And there was a kingfisher.
But it flew away.
In a nearby lovely coloured tree, there was quite a few birds.
First, this cinerius tit.
This used to be the same species as the great tit in the UK, but they've recently split it into two species.
And there was a pygmy woodpecker.
One of my favourite common birds in Japan.
Just look at those autumn colours.
I'm so happy with these photos.
And luckily, there were some long-tailed tits too.
They actually cooperated for once, and I was able to get some good footage of it.
It seems the cinerius tit is enjoying crunching in the autumn leaves too.
It must be looking for some bugs.
This one is a female bow-headed shrike.
So there were a lot of these ducks with red heads.
And from a distance at first, I thought it must just be morwigians.
But actually, these are... I don't know how to pronounce it.
I think pochard, or pochard. I'm not sure.
This is the first time that I could take a good close-up picture of one of these birds.
Oh, here comes some morwigians.
They're coming onto the grass.
But they have to cross the road first.
Here comes a friend.
Quickly, I think a bicycle is coming.
Oh!
And we made it.
This one took a little time to identify.
This is a black-necked grebe.
This is only my second time seeing this bird ever.
Look at this Anereus tit.
He's eating some pulp from the reeds here, I think.
Or maybe insects inside.
But it seems he's eating the plant matter itself.
Having an absolute feast.
And there were about 20 of them.
There were so many men with big camera lenses standing around.
I thought there must be something.
And it was a goldcrest.
Which is quite rare for Tokyo.
So I was really happy to see this one.
I think cormorants are so cute when they flap their wings like that.
Oh, this one's having a bath.
They have to dry their wings.
And this kingfisher had lovely lighting behind it.
So I was able to take some really nice pictures too.
There he goes.
Where did he go?
Oh, he's back.
And this time he has a fish.
Very small fish, so very easy to eat.
Oh my god.
I was so excited to zoom in and see what this was.
It's a half-inch.
This is maybe only my second time to see a half-inch.
Look at the size of that beak.
That beak could break rocks, I think.
Look at it. It's huge.
He was enjoying eating seeds a lot.
I think there were two of them, but I could only take a picture of one.
So happy to get this bird.
What a good surprise.
Another winter duck.
And this time it is a female shoveler.
Again, another very impressive beak.
And now this is something that I've not seen much before.
This egret is almost fully submerged inside the water.
It's like he's having a bath.
I couldn't believe it.
Oh, Kingfisher has another fish.
This must be a different Kingfisher.
And this fish is much bigger.
Is he going to manage to eat it?
I thought I could see something hiding in the bush,
but when I zoomed in, it was a black-crowned night heron.
He looks very sleepy, so I'll let him take a rest.
And just before I left the park,
I saw the bird that I came looking for today.
The dorian redstart.
And a male too.
Look at those autumn colors.
I'm so happy with these photos.
It was difficult to film because he was moving around a lot, but yes.
Thank you for watching.
Please like and subscribe.
I'd be happy if you did.
This video was in English, but I'll go back to Japanese next time.
Bye-bye!
