A beautiful morning alpine climbing in Rocky Mountain National Park. We woke up extra early to make it to Chasm View, and the technical start, by sunrise. It was worth not sleeping! A great day out on one of my favorite mountains in Colorado.
Morning, what time is it?
It's almost 1 in the morning.
Having a coffee and then leaving.
Alright, oh there's a bug in here.
It's 1 to 5 am.
We are leaving my apartment up in Denver.
Rob just drove up here from Colorado Springs, so he didn't sleep at all.
And we're gonna go head up to Longs Peak Trailhead today for a very exciting day.
It's 2.50 in the morning.
It's a Tuesday, and the parking lot is very full.
Like, we, I think, got one of the last spots, which is pretty crazy.
Doing the cables route today, which is a 1 or 2 pitch, multi-pitch, 5-4 climb.
Should be a great day.
Weather looks great.
We got Rob and Brover out here.
This will be his first time outdoor rope climbing.
What's up, baby?
Should be out here.
Man, how far have we gone?
3 miles.
3 miles, yeah.
Yeah, definitely feeling the altitude.
It's going well, though.
It's beautiful.
Alright, so we made it to Granite Pass.
Around 12,100 feet, 2.2 miles to the base, which is Chasm View.
Hopefully, we're gonna make sunrise, but it's gonna be really tight.
About 1,500 feet of gain to there.
We're cruising, but a long ways to go.
Rob will be climbing that sometime in the next 12 months, and this is his first time seeing it.
Hopefully, we'll see.
That's so sick.
Some people up there.
So, we got Long's behind me.
One of the most beautiful 14ers in the state.
I have been to the start of the climb that we're doing today,
when I photographed our buddies Averin and David climbing the Diamond.
And then I summited from Camel Gully to the Keyhole Route.
So this will be really awesome, getting up the cables.
Been wanting to do it for a while now.
I don't know, we're at the Diamond.
Walking through a boulder field, sun's about to rise.
13,000 feet, something like that.
Woo, making our way to right there for sunrise.
To the right.
Keyhole, Chasm View and where we're going.
Mount Lady, Washington.
Feeling good.
Tired, but good.
We made it to Chasm View.
One of my top three spots, her views, in Colorado.
Love it here.
We have this really cool rock point with the sunrise behind it.
And the Diamond.
What do we think, Rob?
It is spectacular.
That's definitely on par with the first time I've seen Mount Wilson.
12 or 13 minutes late for sunrise.
The annoying thing is that the drive here, we got stuck in construction traffic.
Even though it was 1 a.m.
And it added 13 minutes to our ETA.
So we did time it perfectly.
However, the sun coming above this really awesome pointed rock
that I like.
It's been like a bucket list shadow run to get a sun star with someone on top of it.
Because the last time I photographed it, it was midday.
So, really, really cool and stoked on that photo.
Behind Brover is the cables route.
You got two pitches of 5.4 and then a bunch of scrambling.
Scramble dangle.
Want some scrambled eggs?
Looking difficult.
No, no, no.
It's your first climb.
It's my first outdoor climb.
Hell, yeah.
It's a badass one, man.
All right.
We are all geared up.
Brover's got service.
So he's FaceTiming his mom.
I'm FaceTiming my mom.
Rob is gearing up to lead.
We are going to be end roping just for sake of not having to carry another rope.
So Rob's going to lead.
I'll be in the middle and then hopefully get some good footage of Brover behind me.
Should be pretty easy.
Yeah, we're 600 feet from the summit.
Also, I'm going to toss in some footage I have of people climbing the diamond from last year just because it's really cool.
So I did that from Chasm View.
And that's just a really cool perspective to see people on the wall.
Like a beach walrus.
You called me a walrus.
That move just looked pretty funny.
First time climbing outside.
Let's get ready for a ride.
Rob set it up.
Brover and I are end roping.
Let's get it.
So I thought I was going to have my camera out, but I've got a walkie-talkie hanging.
I've got a Garmin hanging.
I had a bear spray hanging.
I put that in the bag.
I'm just going to put this away.
I don't want to get in the way.
So I'm going to switch to the GoPro so you guys can see the climb.
The first pitch, I mean, we do it at the full 70-meter length.
We're probably at the scrambling point, but just to be safe.
And the rope's already out.
We're going to do it.
Potentially set an anchor.
It's super chill, which it looks like it might be.
Give me some.
Woo!
Good stuff.
First long peak summit.
What do we think?
Oh, it's so amazing.
I think I enjoyed the view of the diamond more than this.
I love that mountain, man.
First time seeing it.
Up here, it's still phenomenal, too.
I mean, it's just so surreal.
It's almost not real.
Yeah, amazing time.
Loved hanging out with the boys.
When we were looking at the diamond, we just kept saying to each other how it looked like a green screen.
Like, it's so big and unfathomable that it just doesn't look real.
So typically, when people get on the 14er wagon, they do like Bierstadt or Quandary or Elbert.
Like a class one, maybe class two.
Brover, I guess me and Rob kind of decided for him.
We were like, nah, your first route is going to be a 5.4 multi-pitch alpine climb.
And he killed it.
It's a beautiful life, bro.
Good ----, bro.
Thank you, man.
Thank you.
No, this is truly unreal, man.
I am on top of the world, literally.
Figuratively and literally.
It's unreal.
So, we are on our way down.
Going to propel down the cables.
Brover, on top of doing this crazy route for his first outdoor climb and for his 14er, has a flight today.
425.
Back to Maryland.
And then tomorrow, he has a flight from Maryland to Dominican Republic.
Yeah, Dominican Republic.
So, we're going to try to cruise down there.
So, I'm going to film my best.
But yeah, we're going to be going for speed a little bit.
Rob's doing the classic butt slide right now.
A little scoot scoot.
Don't make fun of me for my socks and shoes.
You got socks on right now?
Oh, man.
You're going to get roasted in the YouTube comments.
That's if this video gets more than like six views.
We are cruising.
Speedwalking.
Running something.
Four or five miles left.
We're trying to get Brover in the car in like an hour and a half to two hours so he can make his flight.
Here he is kind of trying to enhance us to run as we speedwalk.
Bro, we just climbed that.
Yeah, we did.
Wait, that?
Yeah.
Holy s**t.
Wait, really?
That?
The big one on the right side.
Oh, my God.
We did.
Holy s**t.
That's crazy, bro.
I'm out.
I'm sprinting in my car.
Got a flight to catch to Punta Cana.
Well, actually, Baltimore then Punta Cana.
We'll see you next time.
Keep watching my man's videos.
Subscribe, like him, and out.
Alright, we're done.
Adios.
We're wrecked.
Shout out to Brover for backpacking three days straight.
He left the fuel.
That's funny.
And then he came and did his first 14er, his first time climbing outdoors.
He crushed it.
And now he's flying to Baltimore to fly to Dominican.
He's got a wild few days.
But yeah, thanks for watching.
See ya.
