Today we have a very special wine on the program.
It is the Barolo Montortino Reserva 2019 from the winery Giacomo Conterno.
Here we have the very latest vintage, 2019.
While we open the wine, maybe a few short words about it.
2019 is the first vintage since 2015, which has come to the market here at the winery.
Giacomo Conterno brings the best vintages into this very special bottle, cuvee, as you want to call it.
But it is actually 100% Nebbiolo from two very special vineyards in Pyrmont.
From the vineyard Arione and Francia.
And you can already see it here when the whole thing comes out.
You have a nice pomegranate red.
You can really see the maturity that this wine brings with it.
The whole thing is a Barolo.
So from the little town, hanging around Barolo.
We also have Reserva on it.
This means that the wine is at least five years old before it comes to the market.
And Montortino, to explain that, is the homage to Monforte d'Alba,
where this wine comes from and where the wine is made.
And we'll take a look now.
The whole thing already smells out of the glass.
Very, very impressive.
We have a lot of dark, tart, bitter chocolate.
The whole thing is underpainted with dried cherries.
A little bit of rosy, so rose petals, which you can already smell.
But everything in itself is really like an essence.
Very, very concentrated.
This is of course 100% Nebbiolo, the local grape variety from Barolo,
which of course always makes a big Baron.
But it really smells very, very complex.
So through this maturation, although it is the youngest year,
which is of course super, really very, very impressive.
Let's see what the wine gives in the glass.
It really has immense power here, as you can already see in the glass.
You are very, very young on the market.
You notice that everything is still very, very compact.
Everything is still pulling.
We have this beautiful, really very elegant, very strong tannin.
Really a big pull of acid.
And you notice, okay, the Montfortino,
which we wanted to create 100 years ago,
these are wines that have been aged for decades.
In the past, the old vintages,
you couldn't touch aging at all 20, 30 years ago.
They were so strong and richly developed in large Slovenian or Slovenian wood barrels.
Slovenian wood barrels from Dorum.
Tradition, of course, also in the region.
And you notice that here.
Of course, we still have a lot more finesse today
because of the improved cellar technology,
which also arrived in Barolo, of course.
The whole thing is a bit more accessible.
But you notice that this is a wine that really needs at least 5 or 10 years
to get into a phase where it is really worth opening the wine.
But you have to say, it already tastes great complex.
So this tart, bitter, this dark, this red fruit actually.
It's actually much more this cherry, this cherry undertone
and under such a tart, bitter, chocolate, voluminous.
So it's really just a great wine.
And you can already hear, I always fall from the chair at this tasting.
It's really great.
You also notice with the air, it develops in the glass more and more.
So who would dare to come here.
As I said, you open a very, very young wine here,
but it is already quite complex,
from what you can find in the glass.
A very, very large wine.
Has also reached the 100 points among countless critics.
Among other things also by Rob Parker from Wine Advocate Magazine.
And rightly so.
A fantastic wine here.
One of the largest wines in Italy and also in the world.
Of course highly limited.
In the 10,000 classes maximum in a year.
When such a Montepulciano comes to the market.
And you notice that here comes the best of the best.
