The Warriors defeated the Pelicans, 104-96 tonight in Golden State. Jimmy Butler III finished with a team-high 24 points along with 10 assists and 8 rebounds for the Warriors, while Gary Payton II tallied 19 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists in the game. Zion Williamson recorded 25 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. The Warriors improve their record to 11-10 with the win, while the Pelicans fall to 3-17 for the season.
Saturday night at Chase Center and sometimes things that happen in the building are so special
that we want you to be a part of it. And welcoming back Kavon Looney, a three-time champion,
a decade in the bay, really the soul of the team for so long. And here's the introduction
and the welcome back of Kavon. Reinforcements coming, but it's going to be super challenging
without Steph. Everybody realizes they have to do more. Even smaller margin for error.
No room for mistakes. No mental lapses. And this Pelicans team, they have Zion Williamson back.
You didn't see him last time you played him. So that's going to be a big challenge in and of
itself. How do you defend him? Do you double team him? You want to gap him? You're definitely
keying on him. Your game plan revolves around him and then attack him on the other side. I think
one of the main things when you think about this Pelicans team, too, they're fifth in steals.
They get active with their hands. You don't want to rack up the turnovers against them.
With Zion back on Monday, they won 143-130 against Chicago with 78 points in the paint.
Lost in overtime to Memphis, 133-128. Bottom line, when he's back, they score.
Well, with him in the fray, anything can happen. Their shooting percentages haven't been good,
but when he's attacking and getting downhill and making the defense react,
people get open looks. Percentages go up. Some of the same split action, but you don't have
the greatest shooter of all time. Shot clock at five. Kijewski trying to make something out of
nothing. Hostos another three. He got it. And Derrick Queen is just helping off so much,
but it was because QP didn't give up a blow bot. Yeah, and Moody knew, hey,
Zion's not going to pass that. He's looking for his own there.
Up and under. Flipping it in and drawing the foul.
We talked to Jordan when we were in New Orleans. It'd be good to see him healthy.
Beautiful finish there. Get more and more comfortable.
You almost have the highest plus minus on the team. The way you do.
Fierce comes up with a steal. He'll just shoot the foul line jumper. He's got that in his game.
Not as much the three ball, but mid-range, he's pretty comfortable there. He can put the ball on
the floor. I really like his game. One year at Maryland, he was the 13th pick of the draft.
The lob, Draymond to Jimmy, and he tapped the basket. Anytime the Pelicans make a mistake,
take advantage of it with head. Here, right to the rim. Mike and Peavy in, along with
Mr. Alvarado. And Peavy is known for his defense. Really good at moving without the ball, too.
Menga inside, pump it, and the finish. Get him what nobody can take a lid off either basket
right now. Draymond was in the mix there. Richard out of the corner.
Two-man game, Alvarado and Zion up top.
Think about closing up Zion, but Peavy driving and a nice finish.
11-11. So now you start to see, all right, you're that cold,
McGowan hits the three. That's what I'm saying. I normally didn't look at it unless I had a
terrible game, you know. He healed, taking it inside and flipping it up. I was the best player
out there. I was the best player out there. I should play more. Zion giving that strong left
hand. You saw Draymond playing perfectly, but we've talked about it. That's what Meese does.
Right inside, and you don't want Zion to get a freebie like that.
They're not world beaters offensively either. You're helping them if you're just going to
keep fouling. And get to the left hand, and that's nice.
He's got that. Stay at one-three. One for 16.
Fears a thousand miles an hour. Couldn't lay it in.
But Devon Looney does. He's having an impact. Post up Jimmy Butler, and let him go to work.
Zion is starting to percolate a little bit. Steve Kerr sensing that. You're not making
the defense help. You're not really exploiting switches. You can do better.
Jimmy Butler turning it over. That's a rarity.
The walk it up half court has not worked in any way, shape, or form.
They're struggling to get stops now, so you have to take it out of the net.
Tougher to get out of transition. Butler finding GP2. Anything in rhythm. Any type of flow.
Megan, there you go. GP2 again. They've been getting back in transition the Pelicans have,
so you have to live in the front court, the half court I mean. Mooney is the streak.
The Warriors have been one of 19 on threes. They're trying to get Alvarado switched on to him.
Jimmy didn't finish there, but if you lose GP2, where will he be? Around the basket.
Jimmy shot clock at three. He checked it. Baseline three. GP2's there again.
They're going to have a good amount of them on the defensive side. Sadiq Bey's got deep position
there. Finding Peavy. Able to finish. Well, first of all, the product started with Alvarado. Cut
through there. The size disadvantage. Mooney putting it up and in. The Warriors have 12
second chance points. They deny fears. Raymond was there in the last line of defense. Spencer
running and Pat finishes off the... He spilled in the lane. Shot clock at 12. Vesey down the lane
to lay it up and in. That's a nice take right there. Yeah, it was kind of an awkward close out
and he faked it to the right corner to Alvarado. That made the defense shift just enough. Butler
down the lane. GP2. He's there again to lay it in. What is it stuck with that zone? It's worked.
Into Jimmy again. Good catch. Good finish. He's just running the floor.
Good mentality change with that. Alvarado lobbed. Peavy did well just to catch it
and Meesey guided it home. Getting the third. Zion Williamson holding at the elbow.
Getting around Raymond to put it up and in. They made Zion work. Bejewski, Mooney,
Jimmy Butler, Raymond, and Quinton post. He thought about the trail three. Bejewski.
Zion, pretty good recovery. Reload three and Brandon fears that quickness and right to the
rim to lay it up and out. Fierce, quickest man to the ball. Just turned and fired it in for the
three. Jeremiah Fears, the one-year at Oklahoma, the seventh pick overall. He's just live wire out
there. Moving at a different speed. Running interference for Bejewski. Mooney catching that
in motion to get all the way to the rim. That's the 0.5 decision you need. When the decision is
clear, that defender isn't going to be able to cut you off if you go quick. Talk about quick.
That's where Zion, I mean, he's 6'6", 284. He's noticeably leaner than previous years, but
man, that first step of the skill of the left hand. Well, he wasn't going to take the six points
in the first half, lying down. Bejewski coming alive here. Yeah, you're getting some good split
action there. A little unorthodox that time. Drayvon has seen everything, just exploiting
switches. Zion Williamson was just late getting his man, Steve Bay, hitting a three. So both teams,
the halftime break did them well because you're seeing some offensive flow.
Pelicans lost at Memphis, 133-128. They've beaten Chicago, 143-130. They've been scoring,
they've been competitive, but they've got 14. Those three are on the big man, Eve Meese.
Post, tightroping the baseline to put that up at 8. Williamson with 10, the first Pelican in
double figures. Steve Bay right to the rim. Yeah, Drayvon didn't really want to help off Zion.
No issue with the Warriors' defense tonight.
Scoring on the other end, Zion, going to pick up the dribble. Look at that.
Very few guys in the league could just have made that play. Well, that's footwork,
the dexterity for the big man in there.
Bejewski, close to Jimmy on Alvarado. Cycling around, Bejewski, stopping in another three. So
Brandon didn't score in the first half. He's been outstanding here with 10. Well,
Jimmy Bell isn't making things happen. That's just the double team on his part.
It didn't take very long. He got rid of it. You get the ball moving, they're behind.
And Grandma's playing the game there. Okay, Zion, you know, you hit the elbow jumper,
it's not going to be a layup. Yeah, if he's hitting that shot,
there's nothing you can do. Just tip your hat, run back.
Bejewski, there, defending. Bejewski, shot clock at eight.
Moody, catch and shoot. He was ready. Feet set, right in the pocket, boom.
Sadiq Baig didn't go to work himself. Wheels around to lay it up and in. Sadiq Baig,
pretty solid take, and he's got 10. So, can you take advantage of that? First things first,
finish this quarter strong. He turned it over. Okay, now the Warriors have had some giveaways,
and of course, Alvarado hits a three. Good ball movement. Buddy on a reload three,
and he dropped it in. So, Buddy healed his second field goal. Just made him feel it,
made that shot a tiny bit tougher. Bejewski caught that on the run,
great to lay it up and in. That's the point five decision. You got Jimmy Butler with
Alvarado trailing, and he was behind. You've got to wait and see if you can get Jimmy Butler in
there and expose that. Here's going to hit that three. Jeremiah Fierce now with a dozen.
Bay with a dozen. Zion with 14. And Buddy healed. Buddy healed, throwing up a heat check.
He's like, I don't need anybody to create anything for me. I'm just going to walk into one.
Looking inside and tipped up and in by Macy. Warrior lead clinging to one right now.
Cramon is back in. A nice lob to Jimmy. Zion is just harping off in no man's land.
Finishing quarters, particularly at home. They did it the first time, but Jimmy Butler's got 19.
0 for 7 shooting, 0 for 6 on threes. Crash the offensive glass and get a clink. Some of these,
you can win out. It's going to be an arm wrestling match since the Gatehouse.
And Warriors are in the zone now, back in this. This worked for them in the first half.
Fierce left alone, and he just lasers that three. On the offense for Jimmy.
It's the key in the second quarter. Will Richard catching 2-3. Will Richard dropping in the triple.
His first field goal of the night. This is being shot ready.
Jimmy Butler gets the ball. His man cheats off just a little bit. He's ready to shoot.
Looney sent that last screen in there. Clipped his man. He was ready to attack the rim no matter
who was there. So Richard makes a three. Kaminga is 1-4 from deep.
Sadiq Bae answers with a triple of his own.
Long way to go. Tied at 82. He's going to launch another one.
Looney had gapped him a little bit. He sees the tallest player on the floor for the Pelicans.
Pat Spencer will challenge him and throw it right over. Pat Spencer will challenge anyone.
Make a good closeout on Sadiq Bae initially.
Using that strength, took it right to the rim, and Kaminga fouled him.
He's talking crazy, too.
Massive free throw disparity. 30-14. Bae 1-2. Pudzieski with a three. What a second half for
Brandon. He's balanced. Broken up by Draymond. Beautiful defensive play. Does that all the time.
Stab at the drive. Jump backwards. He just baits him into that pass.
Three-and-a-half, so it's crunch time. You got to split out and get to that strong left hand.
Just moving speed. No blow by Butler. Back to GP2 again. Can you add to the six-point lead? Butler
does. It makes it an eight-point game. He's playing the clock as well as the Pelicans right now.
Pudzieski step around. GP2. Ball game. Find a way to win, and they have done that tonight.
Right down the lane. 24-10-8.
Dubs will have a couple days and get ready for the biggest challenge you face in the NBA,
and that is the incredible Thunder, who now have Jalen Williams back and Shea Gildas Alexander.
So, Dubnation, they kind of exhorted the defense. They appreciated the effort and the energy.
Five players in double figures. Steve Kerr and James Borrego with a nice moment there,
and then Jaron Collins, also one of our favorites. Welcome back, Kamon Looney, and leave with a dub.
