From the backstretch, it's Billy Pouch Jr. I believe.
We're here with Kentucky Derby.
It's on some asphalt, so something fun, something different.
We'll go out and see what happens.
How far are we on times?
4 tenths.
4 tenths off of Danner?
Actually, Danner wasn't...
Bobby Lovers.
What do you think?
We're good.
You're good?
Yeah, we're good.
You can shut them all down.
Just good.
If we ain't got it by now, we're in trouble.
What are you breaking up to?
Oh, it's out of fuel.
Oh.
But it'll only break up off the corner.
Maybe it's over 10 gallons.
It's a time trial, so...
Yeah, I mean, I think that's the way we gotta go.
You know what I mean?
Yeah, we have like hours, right?
Yeah.
We should probably pull them off.
You want to pull the rear tires off or put them in there by the heater?
I just want to go down there.
All right, same way.
It took you a while to get to speed.
I was like, yeah, I was a little...
I was like, I don't need a lot to sync up on that one.
Are we doing a redraw or invert?
Well, we're going to do a time trial.
Yeah, but it's not heads up then, right?
I don't know.
Everybody, sorry for the delay.
No drug traffic in the pit area.
No speeding.
Drivers, watch out.
This place is packed.
We don't need anybody hit.
And pedestrians, watch out for moving cars.
For the new guys that race here, or don't race here,
no bumpers going in the corner.
Have yourself ready and move quickly.
We will wait for you, but we can't wait forever.
So, please.
Speedsters have a wheelbase of 72 inches.
They are fuel injected, running on methanol.
You can smell them if the wind hits just right.
A very distinct odor with the Speedsters.
A neat little package worth about $21,000.
You can go racing turn key with the Speedsters.
And I believe we have a change from the time trials.
We might be going into a heat race format, Sal.
Is that correct?
That is correct.
One race, nine cars.
The Speedsters going to load the ramp and head down here.
Decide who's going to start top of the heap for the feature race here.
Coming up in just a few.
These cars are really interesting.
I mean, just never realized that they were primarily
powered by Mopar four-cylinder motors.
These cars truly built for like the weekend racer.
Easy to maintain.
Parts readily available.
And just a ton of fun to get behind the wheel of
and race both on asphalt and on dirt all around the Northeast.
We're going to tell you about some of the competitors
you'll see in this qualifying race.
Billy Pouch Jr. will be behind the wheel of the number one R.
He's out of Frenchtown, New Jersey.
He's a regular at the Action Track USA on Wednesday nights.
They'll fire it off here.
Green flag is out for this eighth lap heat race.
Look at Bobby Butler.
They're all sideways into turn number one.
TDD.
Green flag comes out.
Look at Bobby Butler in the O4 now challenging Billy Pouch Jr.
As one car spinning around.
And it's Pouch who will take the field to green here.
He'll head it off into turns one and two.
Here comes Bobby Butler to the inside.
And don't count out Briggs Dadder in the 78.
Briggs Dadder now challenging Butler for that runner-up spot.
Out of turn number four.
Pouch leading a hungry pack of speedsters back into turn number one.
Butler there up on the high side.
He's going to leave a little bit of a window open there for the 78 of Briggs.
Car slipping and sliding all over the exit of turn four.
Dadder going to look to slide himself in on the top.
No, he's going to dive to the bottom.
He's all over the place.
Yeah, top three under a blanket right now.
Dadder looking high, looking low, diving to the inside.
Nothing there.
Once again to the inside of Bobby Butler.
Great battling in the speedsters as Butler now challenging Pouch Jr. for the lead.
He moves to the outside.
Here comes Dadder down low.
Dadder getting side-by-side with him.
Not going to quite be clear here.
He's going to be door-to-door.
He's going to be looking for the lead himself.
These three cars now nose-to-tail for the top three positions.
And now it's a four-car battle for the lead.
Here comes Matt Janusz in the 48.
Two-by-two for that third spot.
Janusz to the inside.
Bobby Butler up high.
Janusz down low.
As we are two laps away from the finish of this exciting heat race.
I'll tell you what.
If this is just a preview of this heat race for the feature,
we are in for a barn burner later on here today in the feature race.
Vendoring.
Briggs Dadder going up to the top there on Billy Pouch.
Going to try to make that second lane work here.
Not quite there.
Pouch closes the door on him.
Side-by-side for a brief moment on the backstretch.
The checkered flag comes out.
Pouch Jr. able to hold off Briggs Dadder.
I know I feel like I'm holding him up,
but the problem here is, Ralph, if I overdrive the corner,
then you give the bottom up, right?
So I'm like, if I just back my speed down,
they're never going to pass me.
That's what I figured.
If I timed it right, I'd be golden, you know?
I seen him poke his nose one time.
He tried to roll the outside.
I yanked him, right?
I can see him, but you ain't passing me on the outside.
I got to keep this rolling here.
They'll probably invert forward now.
A lot of history in racing, right?
No matter asphalt or dirt.
This race has been going on for 60 years,
and it's really cool just to be a part of it.
I'd love to get back in a tour model one day,
but that too shall come.
I drew a six.
Inverted a six.
Who's that put on the pole?
That's why I stopped.
Yeah, I drew a six.
What'd you end up?
Third, you'll start fourth.
I'd rather be on the inside, but that's me.
I was just running the bottom.
You ain't going to pass me on the outside.
You can't pass me on the outside.
Yeah, see what I did?
Paulus and Tanner Van Doren
going to lead this field to green.
This 20-lap feature.
Paulus, the control car,
through the restart zone and away we go.
Green flag is out.
Paulus having a rough time there.
The two of Tanner Van Doren
jumps at the opportunity, gets out to the lead.
Bobby Butler on the outside
in that short load, running minutes concrete,
trying to make a move to the inside.
Nothing there.
Meanwhile, to come down to lead lap number one,
it is the number two of TBD, Tanner Van Doren.
TBD has a mirror full, though.
The 48 of Matt Janisch now
trying to make a run up to the leader here
as they dive down into turn three.
You don't want to see these cars
get too sideways here on asphalt,
but making up a lot of time is that 48
as he's going to look for the leader
to the bottom in turn two.
They're side by side.
Wheel to wheel for the lead
into turn number three.
New leader out of turn number four.
Give that top spot to Matt Janisch.
Here comes Briggs Tanner
in the 78 for the runner-up spot.
Briggs Tanner's looking at these guys
having fun at the front
and says, I want a piece of that too.
Looks like he's going to stay
in the middle of the corner here
just waiting for Tanner Van Doren
to open the door for him here.
Tanner Van Doren a little bit slippery
on the last couple of turns
as Janisch looks to get out of the way
from these two who start to battle.
They have some time to think about it.
We're going 20 big laps here for the feature.
They went eight in the heat race.
They can plan their strategy,
plan their moves, and don't look now.
Bobby Butler is going to make it
a four-car dance for that top spot.
Bobby Butler coming up on them in a hurry.
A East Coast Sprint car winner
in the USAC series.
He knows his way around a speedster,
knows his way around this type of competition.
Yellow flag.
Problems on the backstretch.
It's Billy Pounce Jr., I believe.
In the 1R.
Did not see if he got into the wall
or the car slowed down perhaps,
but he's going to bring it to the apron
in turn number three.
So one of the favorites
to win here.
Coming up lame in the infield
on the one-fifth mile.
We'll see if the track crews can attend
to Billy Pounce Jr.
And maybe he...
Oh, he got it restarted.
We'll see if he goes to the pits
or drops to the rear of the field.
We'll try to get some more information
on what happened there to Billy Pounce.
Started this race in sixth position.
We get these speedsters
under yellow pacing here.
Line up.
Pounce taking his speedster automobile
to the pit area to be looked over
by the pit crews back there.
Run shutoff, run shutoff.
Sounds like it's going into...
Last call for 9NJ at 73J.
The second group of eight
who are modified to the scale 24R,
16, 24NJ.
All right, guys.
Don't send your kid to Somerset Votech.
We let Neal tune her in today
and she started banging.
He must have slept through Honda 101 today.
He can't even look at me now.
I got him going.
No, I don't know.
We won the heat race there.
I don't think I gave a recap, did I?
Nah, the camera guy's starting
to get a little lazy
on his camera job duties.
But walking at a wall
with three laps for 12 hours,
that was my day.
Watch the sun come up
and now it's going down.
I don't know.
Cleared an Europolis there.
I was running fifth.
I thought I'd run top four.
It would have been okay.
Something just shut off
in that car motor.
From there it was over.
It just kind of sucked
with what we had.
That's enough racing for me
for at least a while.
The cameraman won't head
to dinner with us.
He's too cool.
We have a pre-Madonna camera guy.
Bless you on the back side.
