What do you do to improve your French orally?
Today, I'm taking you to a shadowing exercise
to improve your pronunciation.
We're going to shadow a great French actress,
Laure Calame.
Hi, I'm Marion.
I'm a French teacher.
And my specialty is to teach French
through movies and French series
to give you cultural knowledge,
to give you knowledge also in terms of
grammar and vocabulary techniques,
and to help you better understand
French spoken by natives.
One of the techniques that I use most often
and that is very effective to understand
French spoken and also to speak it better
is shadowing.
Shadowing is a technique that will allow you
to become aware of the modifications
that French people make to their orals
to be able to speak faster.
It's a very powerful technique
and it will allow you to work on your understanding
and also your expression.
But be careful, the goal is not only
to speak like a native Frenchman.
You can absolutely keep your accent
and your way of speaking.
The goal is to make you more independent
in your understanding, more comfortable
when you find yourself surrounded by natives
who don't pay attention to their way of speaking.
Today we're going to use an excerpt
from an interview with Laure Calamy
and you'll see, it's very interesting.
Ok, so let's listen for the first time
to what she says here
and then I'm going to re-write it
in an almost phonetic way
so that we understand the modifications
that she makes to her orals.
But you, at home, you can totally re-write it
in your own way, with your alphabet,
with your way of making it similar to the sound
to what she's saying.
You'll see here, we're on a part
where she tells something quite intimate,
quite personal,
and so she hesitates a lot about the words.
There are a lot of times when she hesitates,
she uses tricks to be able to
then look for these words.
Let's watch the excerpt right now,
it'll be more practical.
But because I was running away,
because there was a moment
where I was getting on my nerves,
I was a bit like garbage, you see?
In class and all that,
when all of a sudden you're a bit harassed
or I don't know what,
I didn't want to be the target,
I felt that it could be possible
at some point, there was a year like that,
and so I wanted to be invisible,
I was shaving the walls, I was quiet,
I was trying to be as transparent as possible.
So, we're going to start from the beginning.
If you listen carefully,
you'll notice that the parce que,
in the oral form,
and I imagine that maybe you already know it,
it's going to become parce que.
But because I was running away, she says.
But because I was running away.
And we always have this hesitation at the end
that you will often see transcribed like that,
H-E-U,
but you can of course write it like that.
Because I was running away.
But because I was running away.
Because in fact...
Because in fact, another E,
and another parce que,
which is going to become something like that.
Parce que,
parce que,
maybe even a passe,
when,
do,
we have a long E.
Because in fact...
OK.
There was a time when...
So, this is going to be a bit difficult.
Because you saw,
we have a lot of vowels here.
And sometimes it's a bit complicated to chain all that.
So let's listen again.
There was a time when...
There was a...
There was a time when...
OK.
So it's going to be something like that.
There was a time when...
OK.
Here, the EN is a vowel.
So there's not the pronunciation of the N.
OK.
It's the vowel EN.
There was a time when...
You notice that these sentences,
there's no difference in the intonation.
There's no difference in the volume.
It's almost like she's saying a whole word
when she's saying these sentences.
There was a time when...
Yeah, I was...
When...
Yeah.
I was...
So don't forget that
FAISAIS,
it's not pronounced FAISAIS.
It's written FAISAIS, but it's pronounced FAISAIS.
There was a time when...
We can do it like this.
And again,
We're going to listen to it again,
but you'll see, it doesn't pause.
It's really like, I was getting on my nerves.
There was a time when I was getting on my nerves.
I was getting on my nerves.
Here we're going to have a
I WAS doing.
So like a little bit...
I WAS doing.
Okay, again, no pause.
I was getting on my nerves.
Okay, I was getting on my nerves.
We can push the...
I WAS part of
trash.
Garbage.
Garbage,
I was a little of the garbage.
You see?
You see.
It's really something we often use,
it's going to allow us to make sure
that the people listening to us
follow what we're saying.
and also to have a little bit of his agreement
you see
so if you listen well
you see there is not really the ou of you
you see
it's almost a you see
a long you see
you see
be careful she will do it again
no but you see
you see
it's almost a you see
and here it would be a no
no but you see
it's not really a very long you see
no but you see
when
she looks for her words
but that's the advantage of using interviews
it's very natural
and it will allow you to understand
where to take the breaks
where to take the time to breathe
how to use certain words to
look for your words
for example
typically you see
it will make you sound more natural
and above all it will help you
to create this connection with the person in front of you
in the classes
and all that
so in the classes and all that
again it's a single sentence
in the
classes
and all that
in the classes and all that
we extend a little bit the a
classes and all that when suddenly
in the classes and all that
when suddenly
so when
suddenly
when suddenly
we can even put a que here sorry
when suddenly
suddenly we are a little harassed
when suddenly
so that's also his way of looking for his words
I don't know what
and so when suddenly
when suddenly we are a little harassed
we are a little harassed
all that again without
pause we are a little
a little
harassed
we are a little harassed
where and there listen well
this way of saying I don't know what
harassed I don't know what
I don't know what
So that's really the most typical way we have to say I don't know what, we are a bit harassed, I don't know what.
I was a bit, I didn't want to be the target.
I didn't want, I didn't want to be the target, it's going to become I didn't want, I didn't want, I didn't want to be.
If you listen carefully, we don't have an R here, I didn't want to be the target.
I didn't want to be the target, I didn't want to be the target, I didn't want to be the target.
I felt that it could be possible.
I felt that, I felt that, I felt that.
Instead of that, we're going to remove the E and we're going to bring the sound that to the syllable before.
And so it gives something like I felt that.
I felt that it could be possible.
Once again, the être that is going to become être.
And here we have it could be.
It could be possible.
Possible at one, possible at one point.
I didn't want to be the target.
I felt that it could be possible at one point.
There was a year like that.
And so I wanted to be invisible.
I felt that it could be possible at one point.
Possible at one point.
And here, very interesting, there was a year like that.
So we find the, you remember at the beginning, we had a, there was a time, there was a time.
And here, there was a year, there was a year.
So we're going to have a double U.
It's going to be something like there was a year.
There was a year like that.
We can write it like that.
There was a year like that.
I felt that it could be possible at one point.
There was a year like that.
And so I wanted to be invisible.
So we'll have the bass.
The bass here has a bit of a meaning of so, too.
Of logical consequence.
And so, it's logical.
I wanted to.
And so I wanted to be.
Again we're going to have the wanted to be.
I wanted to be like it could be.
I wanted to be invisible.
Let's listen again.
Like that.
And so I wanted to be invisible.
I was shaving the walls.
I wanted to be invisible.
I wanted to be invisible
This quoi, it's the same, it's a little word that doesn't mean much
that we use a little bit to rythmize our speech
to finish our sentences when we don't necessarily know how to finish them
So the quoi is a little word that has nothing to do with the what of the question
but that we're going to put inside our speech from time to time
I shut up
So, we have the last sentence
And so I wanted to be invisible
I shaved the walls
Here, no difference
I shut up
That's very interesting here
I shut up
I don't know if you remember earlier we had a I me
Here
Yeah, I was getting on my nerves
So we have the I me that turns into where I am
Where I am
We remove this E
So this I me
It can become I me
But it can also become I love
With the verb that goes after
Like here, I love your z
I love your z
It's the second one
So we can either remove this first E here
Or this second E here
We can remove both
I tried to be the most
I tried to be
Once again, we have this little E
I tried to be
the most
I tried to be as transparent as possible
With an E a little longer at the end
There you go, I hope it was interesting
And that you followed my logic a little
Don't hesitate to do it again with other passages of this interview
Which is super interesting
I'll put the link in the description
There you go, I hope you liked this video
Don't hesitate to practice with this video several times
To come back to the beginning, to do pauses
Try to repeat
And try to copy the way to speak of Lorca l'ami
