Now, check out the first group. 中国 美国 法国 英国 德国 As you've noticed, all of these countries end with the word 国. 国 is a word for country. In the first group, we simply use a word that represents the country plus 国. For example, the first one, 中国 China. Here, the word 中 means middle. So, 中国 literally means middle country. But why do we call China the middle country? A long, long time ago, in ancient times, Chinese people thought that China was geographically located in the middle of the world.
