With more than 20,260 households, a total of 95,733 people,
it was a miracle when it was completed three years in advance.
It was a journey of the ultimate effort to complete Vietnam's largest hydropower plant in Southeast Asia,
the pride of Vietnam and international friends.
A completely new construction, with a river flow,
has a lake that holds a huge amount of water up to 9.26 billion cubic meters,
provides more than 10 billion kilowatts of electricity per year,
with a capacity of 2,400 megawatts, which is a large margin of peaceful hydropower.
And perhaps many of us, standing in front of its white-washed gates,
will ask ourselves, how can a person build such a large structure?
How does it operate?
And what role does it play in ensuring that the national power system is always stable?
Today, let's take a journey to discover the top 5 largest hydropower plants in Vietnam
to see what has made the strength of the giants behind the national power grid.
Sơn La hydropower plant, the giant of Southeast Asia.
The number one position is definitely Sơn La,
the largest hydropower plant in Vietnam and also the largest in Southeast Asia,
with a capacity of 2,400 megawatts.
What makes Sơn La so special is not only the capacity,
but also the fact that this construction is built for extreme terrain conditions.
The mountain range is stable, the weather is sunny when it rains,
and the concrete volume is huge,
to the extent that people think it is like building a mini city,
lying in the middle of the Northwest forest.
Sơn La was completed 3 years earlier than planned,
and was completed in 2022,
which is a step to reduce the power shortage for the whole country.
And if you stand on the top and look down at the magnificent mountain range,
you will understand why this project is seen as a symbol of Vietnam's technological capacity.
Peaceful hydropower, a rich memory and a legendary era.
If Sơn La is a modern giant,
peace is the legend of a challenging era.
The plant has a capacity of 1920 megawatts,
which is the largest hydropower plant in Southeast Asia for many years.
Built with the support of the Soviet Union,
peace not only creates electricity,
but also is a historical landmark of Vietnam's hydropower industry,
where tens of thousands of engineers and workers
have been sleeping for 10 years,
to light the most difficult river in the North.
Anyone who has ever seen the door open at the bottom of historical battles will understand that
peace is not just a power plant,
but also a white leaf to protect the Northeast,
from Hanoi to the provinces of Hanoi.
Until now, although it has been almost 40 years,
the plant still operates stably,
playing a very important role in the national power system.
Lai Chau hydropower,
a late-born brother, but very vigorous.
The 3rd place is Lai Chau hydropower with 1,200 megawatts,
also located on the Da River,
connecting Sơn La and Hòa Bình
to create a strategic hydropower bar in the North.
Lai Chau is the youngest plant in this top,
operating since 2016.
The construction of it in an area of dangerous terrain,
lack of roads, lack of materials,
lack of local people,
has made the project a challenge in terms of logistics.
But when it was completed,
Lai Chau contributed to the hydropower of Sơn La and Hòa Bình,
creating a optimal operation chain,
and helping the North to reduce a lot of pressure,
power shortage and drought.
This is an example of how Vietnam
establishes its own hydropower regulations
to optimize the effectiveness of hydropower.
IALI hydropower, the heart of energy of the Northwest.
We left the North to the Northwest
to meet the IALI hydropower plant,
with a capacity of 720 megawatts,
ranked 4th in the list.
IALI is located on the Se San River,
and if you have ever been to Pleiku,
looking down at the blue IALI lake,
you will see that the scenery here
is as beautiful as a natural wonder,
not an electrical construction.
IALI is important because it supplies electricity
to the Northwest and South,
plays the role of water supply of the Se San River,
and is one of the key structures
of the new era.
After more than 20 years of operation,
IALI is still considered the national hydropower plant
of the Northwest.
Thuy Dien, Hoi Quang,
strategic challenge in Cao Bang.
The last hydropower plant in the South
is Thuy Dien, Hoi Quang,
a project with a capacity of more than 520 megawatts,
located on the Gum River in Cao Bang.
Hoi Quang is not as big as Son La or Hoa Binh,
but it is important
because it supplies stable electricity
to the mountains of the Northeast,
creating an energy transition
between Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Tuyen Quang,
and especially contributes to improving
the local economic traffic system,
which was previously very difficult.
Local people have been cooperating
since the founding of Thuy Dien.
The road has expanded, trade has developed,
and many previous areas are almost
separated from the outside world.
Now, there are more opportunities
to access tourism, services, and rewards.
Looking at the South,
we immediately see that Thuy Dien
is not just about generating electricity.
It is the story of energy strategy,
national security,
the lives of millions of people who have to relocate,
and the work of human beings
to change the natural current
to serve development.
Son La is huge, Hoa Binh is legendary,
Lai Chau is young but strong,
Yali is the heart of the West,
Hoi Quang is the motivation of the Northeast.
Each factory has its own story,
but they all share the same goal
to keep the country bright every day,
from the city to the coastal area.
