The principles of California modernism have always been about a conversation
with the landscape. It's a style defined by simple forms, an abundance of natural light,
and a deep almost seamless connection between the indoors and the outdoors.
But designing for Southern California today presents two unique and critical challenges.
How do we manage the intense year-round sun and how do we conserve every single drop of water?
So what would a greenhouse home designed specifically for this climate look like?
How could we embrace the spirit of California modernism while creating a home that is both
productive and incredibly water conscious? I'm Tim Ong and this is the design of a modern
greenhouse home for Southern California. This home is tucked away on a private lot
surrounded by trees. From the front, it presents a very quiet, unassuming facade,
with just a front door and a few strategically placed windows,
it offers complete privacy from the street. It's a solid, protective shell that gives
no hint of the vibrant open life happening within. But when we look at the home from above,
everything changes. You can see that most of the roof is a low maintenance green roof,
a living blanket of native drought tolerant plants. This provides an incredible layer of
natural insulation, keeping the home cool under the hot sun and reducing the heat island effect.
The rest of the home is covered in solar panels, generating more than enough energy
for the entire home. Because the front of the home is so private, the back is designed to
be a complete oasis for enjoying the incredible Southern California weather. The entire north
facing wall of the house is made of glass and opens up to this amazing outdoor space.
I imagine this as a space you could use all day. You could start your morning with a coffee over
here in the soft seating under the umbrella. As the day warms up, you could move to the sunchairs
and read a book by the pool. And in the evening, this entire area becomes the perfect place to
entertain, with a large sectional sofa for friends, a built in barbecue grill, and an
outdoor dining table where everyone can come together and share a meal under the stars.
Now before we head inside, let's take a look at the layout.
This is a 2,800 square foot home with a 750 square foot greenhouse at its center.
The floor plan is a perfect square organized around a central atrium. This simple elegant
layout ensures that every single room in the house has a connection to either the central
garden or the outdoor oasis, filling the entire home with a natural light and air.
The moment we step inside, we're greeted not by a solid wall, but by this beautiful view of the
central greenhouse garden. It's the green living lung of the home, and it's the first thing you
see when you arrive. The home's common areas are organized on either side of the entrance.
Here we have a large kitchen and dining area. The kitchen has a massive center island,
perfect for bringing in the harvest from the garden to wash and prepare.
It flows directly into the dining space, which features a large table for eight and has its own
sliding glass door leading out to a side yard. On the other side is the living room. It's a cozy,
comfortable space to retreat to, with a large sectional sofa and a built-in media center.
But even here, a massive sliding glass door keeps you connected to the outdoors,
letting in that beautiful California light and a gentle breeze.
There's a door that leads to the basement with all the home's utilities and storage.
Now let's step into the greenhouse itself. The light in here is soft and beautiful.
That's because the large skylight above is mostly frosted, diffused glass,
which prevents the plants from being scorched by the direct sun. Tiered raised planters allow
for a wide variety of produce and vegetables to be grown year-round. But the most important feature
of this greenhouse is how it manages water. This central pool of water is part of a closed-loop
system. Any rainwater that's captured is stored in the tanks in the basement. That water is used
for the gardens, and any humidity created by the plants in the pool is captured by the home's
dehumidification system, and that water is then returned right back to the storage tanks.
In a warm, dry climate, this house is designed to drink, breathe, and conserve every drop of water.
This design adapts the greenhouse home concept specifically for the challenges and beauty of
Southern California. It embraces the philosophy of modernism, seamlessly blending indoor and
outdoor living while creating a responsible, sustainable, and water-conscious sanctuary.
It's a home that not only lets you live in nature, but also helps to preserve it.
And that's the design of the modern greenhouse home for Southern California. I hope you enjoyed
