In the vast, almost untouched rural landscape of Pohoi, Backcountry House exists not as
an object seeking to stand out, but as a refuge that understands the land it stands on.
The house is based on a simple typology, the typical New Zealand backcountry hut, an architecture
born from a basic need, shelter, gathering, and co-existence with nature.
The building's form is honest and direct.
A single, elongated main volume serves as the center of the home's life, housing the
kitchen, dining, and living areas in one large, open space.
There is no overly hierarchical structure, the spaces flow naturally, following the rhythm
of daily activities and the movement of light throughout the day.
Large openings on both sides allow the house to be fully open to the surrounding landscape.
When the sliding doors are open, the boundaries between inside and out disappear.
Wind, natural sounds, and changing weather become part of the spatial experience, making
the house more of a living framework than a closed container.
The materials used reinforce the connection to the rural context.
Aged macrocarpa wood, galvanized corrugated steel, and simple interior surfaces reflect
the functional and timeless language of rural building.
There is no loud luxury, just a deliberate honesty of materials and construction.
The private areas, bedrooms, and service spaces are housed in a lower, enclosed additional
volume.
This approach creates a balance between openness and intimacy, between expansive communal spaces
and quiet personal spaces.
Each zone has its own character, yet remains bound together in a cohesive whole.
The house was designed with a quiet yet assertive environmental consciousness.
The building's orientation, natural ventilation, and passive heat utilization demonstrate that
sustainability does not have to rely on complex technology, but rather on an understanding
of the climate and everyday habits.
Backcountry house is a reminder that architecture does not always have to be spectacular to
be meaningful.
It proves that simplicity, when designed with care and respect for nature, can create a
warm, honest, and enduring living space.
A home that doesn't fight the landscape, but grows with it.
