Bowhunting is like all about failure.
If you want to go fast, you go by yourself.
If you want to go far, you go with good people.
You know, guys, I almost died.
I don't know what happened today.
I hit a wall halfway through that workout, so I apologize.
You quit on day four.
You quit.
You found elk.
I was on a six by six herd bull day three elk hunting in my life.
Bugled him in to like 60 yards, no shot.
Quit the next day.
There he is.
Hey, what's going on, brother?
Blake Nations.
Nice to meet you.
Look at this sick footage.
Yeah, that's not my arrow.
I can tell you that.
Come out, spitting left, and then the veins make them go right.
Where'd y'all do this at?
Easton.
Okay.
Yeah, it's pushing left right there.
Oh, no, we took this bow out of tune.
Oh, okay, okay, okay, yeah.
Oh, okay, yep.
There's a sweet spot.
Yeah.
So right there is where that arrow wants to go down.
Yep.
Still, I can, the only thing I've ever not liked about me, other than the fact that you can bend
them, but if you're conscious of that, they're incredible, man.
Yeah, they've been good to me.
I was using Sonics before that, and I liked those as well.
Yeah, and he lost his company because of it.
Oh, I did hear about that.
So they suit him?
Yep, Bowtech suit him.
Now, here's what's interesting.
So is this an Athens?
This is an Athens, yeah.
And so this has that technology, and then you probably can't ever get parts for this
or anything again, huh?
So I bought three of these.
Oh, okay.
You just drive the cam left to right.
There's a lock screw in the back right here.
Okay.
You undo the lock screw, and then you're able to adjust that cam left and right.
Now, the interesting thing is this axle is still through the limbs.
Okay.
So the Bowtech's isn't.
Oh, it isn't?
No, the Bowtech's is clamped to the limbs.
But that's still too close to the design?
I'm not a lawyer, man.
Maybe Bowtech's got more lawyer.
That's exactly what it was.
More lawyer power.
It never went to court, man.
Oh, he just was like, wow.
It lost, it just ate him up, man.
So, which is really sad because-
What was the owner's name?
Jim Klossner.
Great, great dude.
You knew him?
Yeah, I bowed with him.
We actually took him to Mississippi on an alligator hunt.
So rest in peace, Athens.
Dude, great company.
Let's shoot some bows, man, if you want to.
Okay.
Whatever y'all want to do.
I'm down for that.
We do live right next to an archery range.
I walked over to Spokane Valley Archery.
What'd you think of that?
That's the place, man.
The inventory in there, the staff seemed incredibly professional as well.
So I'll be by there tomorrow for sure.
I've got an extra day here to kind of explore.
I've never been to Washington.
So I want to go over there tomorrow and just kind of-
The little skinny kid that I was talking to up in the front, Beckham.
He is 16.
He's a phenom.
Okay.
He's going to be really good.
Michael, the guy that I was talking to the most.
One of the absolute best bow mechanics on planet earth.
And then the guy that was giving a bad time to, Justin Grimes.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Also pure genius.
I kind of, it depends.
I use a 24 for-
So he's got a little, little top guy right there, which I like.
I use the 24 for glass releases because the 23 can slip through on some.
Not all of them, but-
What about a release like this?
You use 23.
That's all I'm saying.
Yeah.
Archery range is incredible.
A lot of uphill, a lot of downhill.
More targets than you'll see most places.
And I don't even think we saw all of it.
I think we kind of had to glass through it.
So we got Blake today.
He came up from Colorado.
I knew he was jacked.
I knew he bow hunted.
So what's your name?
I'm Nick.
And then to your left, my right, is Nick.
What's your last name?
Murray.
And I did not know you two hours ago.
Nick just was like going to shoot the course by himself.
And I'm like, no, no, no, no.
Nice to meet you, brother.
I'm Dan.
Nice to meet you.
His name's Nick.
Where are you from?
Uh, actually kind of just all Eastern, Eastern Washington.
I live in Spokane Valley, but I work out in Lincoln County.
Oh, you do?
Yeah.
So you're off today?
Yes.
Let's shoot bows.
What are you shooting?
Uh, this bare Alaskan XT.
I'm poor, so.
I don't think so.
All right.
These little goats?
Yeah, we try to shoot all at the same time.
Sure.
So we'll shoot some Spanish goats.
He's a cool guy.
There we go.
I'm going to lose all my arrows today.
Regardless if you're shooting uphill or downhill, you don't want to lose that tee.
Sure.
So a lot of times guys who've never shot uphill will just go lift their arm.
Well, now that's not a tee.
Gotcha.
You're going to have to bend at the waist to still hold that tee.
Oh, still a little tall.
The intent was to aim low.
The shake probably made him a little bit up.
It's all good, man.
If you want to go fast, you go by yourself.
And this applies to so many things in life.
Sounds like Oconee, too.
Yes, sir.
If you want to go fast, you go by yourself.
If you want to go far, you go with good people.
Don't be afraid to fail.
If you're setting goals for yourself and they're not scary, they're not big enough.
Your arrow weight, 620?
Yeah, yeah.
Full set up.
Yeah.
Victory VAPs.
So this is the four millimeter.
Shooting a 250 spine.
I like them because they're like GPI-ish for a four mil.
Yep.
Right.
Running the air raisers at the end.
Really recommend this vane.
I don't have...
Look at that offset for four vanes.
I've never seen that crazy offset.
That's like...
How'd you get that crazy offset?
I literally had to cut and mess with my bits.
Okay.
Had to modify it.
Yeah.
Had to modify it.
So I shoot heavy.
So we're like 620-ish here without the nocturnals.
Is that heavy?
I think so.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
It's not quite.
Comment below.
150s.
We called Riley's Arrow heavy this year.
And it's 4...
Was it 488?
People...
Did the internet experts grill you?
Well, it's heavy for him.
Yeah.
It's relative.
It's all relative.
That's why I want him to shoot a cut on contact for Elk.
Yeah.
Because he's not pulling a lot of poundage.
And he's got...
I shoot cut on contact.
Yeah.
I shoot a 620 cut on contact.
So I'm shooting a Day6 or an Iron Will or...
Day6?
There's another brand I want to look at later.
I have a...
I don't know off the top of my head.
But yeah, I shoot a lot of Day6 Evos.
They're regular with the three-quarter bleeder.
Yeah.
Almost a four-blade.
I do like where they put their bleeder.
Yeah.
It's a good head.
And you don't know your total arrow weight.
I do not know.
Okay.
What are you shooting for arrows?
These...
Goal tips.
Goal tip.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
340s.
So I don't know if that was total arrow weight before it got cut down.
That's the spine.
Oh, gotcha, gotcha, gotcha.
Which is like how much it'll flex.
Okay.
Stiffness-wise.
So when he says 250, it's actually stiffer than a 340.
Sure.
As the number goes down or whatever.
And then lighted nocks, this is the key-ups.
Okay.
Is what they're called.
I think they're less than $3 a nock.
Now, obviously, the nock's the most important part of the entire arrow.
That's where all the energy goes through.
So I was concerned.
But I was buying $11 nocks.
Yeah.
Like nock terminals.
How are they doing turning on and off for you?
Turn that one off.
How do you do it?
Take that button and push it up.
Oh, buddy.
Yeah.
And it's a great fit.
This fits 166.
Or if you get a little adapter to go to 204 specific.
The 166 is critical.
Six mil, six and a half.
Sure, sure.
And literally at $3, I buy like 100.
And then I'll just switch them out about, I don't know, every two months.
The nock terminals, I was having a nightmare.
Just half the time they wouldn't turn on.
I like them a lot.
They're awesome.
They have great fit on.
And I don't have to...
Like when I get gas strings, I always order like a smaller diameter serving.
So that I have good nock fit.
But like nock terminal, great nock fit.
But dude, I can't spend $11 on a lighted nock that sometimes turns on.
Sometimes turns on.
Sometimes they don't.
That's a nightmare, man.
So four millimeter over five, why?
More wall integrity.
So if you're going to have the same stiffness for a shaft, if you go four mil,
you have to have more carbon.
Blake is a slab of beef.
Would you agree, Nick?
Monster of a human being.
Yes.
You're six foot three?
Yes, sir.
246.
Yes, sir.
Wow.
Soaking wet.
Yeah.
And not fat.
No, not sometimes.
Not right now.
Yeah, we're getting there.
You look like you just got off.
Like you could be a linebacker for the NFL.
If they want to call me up, I'm ready.
Yeah.
Typically, you're going to start here and up to the top.
Once you touch the top, you can use your legs to come down.
Prior to killing that bull, I thought I was always training for the hunt.
You know, saying, okay, you got to get ready.
You got to get in elk shape.
You got to get trained up for these elk hunts.
And if you're in shape to go do the hunt, you've done your homework.
And that's not the case.
I think you need to be training for the packout.
So the packout's really, that's what you're training for.
Especially if you care about the animal, if you care about the meat.
Training for the hunt, I like that idea.
Yeah.
It's like, I'm going to get into elk shape.
But I love the idea of getting there and staying there.
If you are elk hunting with a bow, which I pray to God you do.
Me too, man.
And you stop and go, what am I doing?
This sucks.
Good.
Remember this conversation.
You're doing it right.
Yep.
And left early.
I did all-
You white flagged it?
White flagged it.
Day three.
Driving through Wyoming on the way back to Colorado, man.
Full grown man.
Don't mind admitting it.
Tears in my eyes.
Yes.
I was like, what are you doing, man?
You dreamed about that opportunity your whole life.
And you quit.
You quit on day four.
You quit.
You found elk.
I was on a six by six herd bull day three elk hunting in my life.
Bugled him in to like 60 yards, no shot.
Quit the next day.
How could you not bow hunt and not make friends with failure?
Bow hunting is like all about failure.
Running, I don't think parallels elk hunting well.
I think what it does do is it creates some mental toughness
and it changes your understanding of what far is.
Only reason I run, and I'm actually decent at running, not Cameron's level.
Yeah.
Only reason I run is to help trick my brain into understanding that
you see that mountain way over there?
It ain't that far.
We can get there, baby.
I can get there.
Yep.
That's the only reason I don't run for a cardiovascular benefit or a zone two or no, man.
I think it's more beneficial doing what we just did in the four walls of my gym than running,
but I run so that I can shrink mountains.
It shrinks mountains, man.
Anytime I have three guys, I want to set up a partner workout where you're going to push
yourself so hard because you don't want to let me down or Nick.
And that's the same story for all of us.
And you're going to shine on certain parts, and you're going to not shine on certain parts.
And so am I, and we're just going to roll.
And this is going to suck, and it's going to be awesome.
And we're going to remember this day.
But when you fall in love with the suck, whether it's the workout in there.
And guys almost died.
I don't know what happened today.
I hit a wall halfway through that workout.
So I apologize for that.
But thank y'all for the push.
You came back, though.
You could have quit.
No, no, no.
Quit's not...
Couldn't quit.
You could have done the Mississippi four-day elk hunt go home.
No.
You didn't, man.
No.
You just went out, puked, came back, and then helped us finish it up.
Yep, yep.
This says a lot about your character.
I appreciate that.
Yeah, yeah.
So I think bow hunting and fitness are a great marriage.
I agree.
I just know the work I've done and my body work for decades.
Yep.
That I just...
There's a lot of bulls in that shed, man.
Why would you write that?
You think I care about a sight?
A sight ain't going to get you an elk killed.
Nope.
It's not.
You can go buy the best bow and the best arrow.
That's not going to get you an elk killed, man.
It's your fault.
It's 100% me.
It's between my ears.
It's blacking out.
I've never blamed the gear.
I've never blamed a release.
I've never blamed an arrow.
Because none of that was the situation.
It's always been, I let the moment get too big.
And if you've never bugled in a bull, if you've never had a bull bugle in your face at 10 yards,
it changed my life.
And I mean that as silly as that sounds to some people.
Most people on this podcast are probably going to get it.
But if people are listening to this that don't elk hunt or have never,
that experience can be almost religious.
So, Blake flew up from Colorado.
He hit me up on the internet and said,
Dan, I want to come over and shoot bows, workout, and podcast with you.
I didn't know him.
I said, sure.
Then we went to the archery range and some dude was about to shoot the course by himself named Nick.
And we're like, Nick, want to shoot with us?
And now he comes over and trains.
He's a total beast.
Savage, dude.
Absolute savage.
Now we're going to go podcast.
This is why you come to the channel because we are selling hard work.
Can't fake it.
Good job.
