The Stravinsky Ballet was composed in 1913. It was first performed on May 29, 1913, in Paris by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, with the famous dancer Nijinsky as director. Stravinsky recounted how he found the inspiration for this work: "As I was finishing the last pages of The Firebird in St. Petersburg, I glimpsed one day, absolutely unexpectedly, for my mind was then occupied with quite different things, I glimpsed in my imagination the spectacle of a great pagan sacred rite: the old wise men, sitting in a circle and observing the dance at the death of a young girl whom they sacrificed to make the god of spring favourable to them. This was the theme of the Rite of Spring. I must say that I was very impressed by this vision and I immediately spoke about it to my friend the painter Nicolas Roerich, a specialist in the evocation of paganism."
In collaboration with Roerich, Stravinsky drew up the plan for a composition in two parts:
*1. Worship of the Earth.
*2. Sacrifice.
Stravinsky described the scene in his memoirs: "The complexity of my score required a large number of rehearsals, which Monteux conducted with his customary care and attention. As for the performance at the show, I was unable to judge it, having left the hall at the very first bars of the prelude, which immediately gave rise to laughter and mockery. I was revolted. These demonstrations, at first isolated at first, soon became general and, provoking counter-demonstrations on the other hand, soon turned into a dreadful din. During the whole performance, I stayed in the wings next to Nijinsky. He was standing on a chair shouting to the dancers: "Sixteen, seventeen, eighteen...". "Naturally, the poor dancers couldn't hear anything because of the tumult in the hall and their own pacing. I had to hold Nijinsky by his garment, for he was furious, ready at any moment to jump on the stage to make a scene. Diaghilev, with the intention of stopping the din, ordered the electricians to turn the lights on and off in the hall. That's all I learned from that first one."
