There will be no more I think this is a good setup. It's going to be an I know this is a good setup.
We have six arrows. We are granted exclusive access to the coolest tests you've ever seen.
We are having high-speed cameras. We are testing every vane configuration you can think of.
We have a shooting machine that is like proprietary, not even. We'll just show you.
Blazers, lasers, tasers, stealthies, super sabers, air razor, flex fletch, sk2.
What are we doing James? What's up man? Is this Christmas for you or what? Christmas.
What are we doing today? What are we discovering?
So ballistics. We're doing drag trying to estimate drag coefficients for different arrow builds
and then we're comparing that to the lift of an arrow. So lift is what corrects the arrow.
So lift is a good thing. Drag is a bad thing. Drag works against the velocity of the arrow.
It slows the arrow down and lift is what recovers the arrow. So we're ultimately trying to find the
best combination of minimizing drag and maximizing lift. And you're gonna find out today.
And we're gonna sure hope to find out. And that, can we even show that shooting machine? I think
we can show it. Because it's proprietary. Yeah but it's that's the that's like the critical
aspect of this is that no human influence. No human influence. Yeah that's kind of cool.
Is Tristan here from Precision Cut Archery? Yeah so his software we'll use to back out the drag
coefficients. Let's go. I think I might have saved it. I might not have. So you're gonna pull
data from all the garments right now? Check out that group. Baby. Shooting machine. Controlled
testing. 284. Mike. I know this vein Riley. No I don't. What vein is this? I'm actually not sure
what vein that is. But that's a two inch group. This is 70 yards. Q2I Griff X 3 inch. So that's
why we're pressing. That's why we have the controlled shooting machine to control
the shot. So it's all same shot. Same draw length. Exact same draw length. Same poundage. Yeah.
Very controlled testing. Now the data you're pulling out. How do you get it? How do you
extrapolate? I wanted to use that word. So this is 60 yards. So we're shooting. The arrow is coming
over the flight path about right here. And it's gathering a velocity. An exact velocity of the
arrow down to the tenth of a foot per second. Right here at 60 yards. And then we have
one at 30 yards. And then at launch. Yeah. So this has one of the veins. Two different bills in here.
One of the veins is way faster. Yeah 171. Way faster. And it has less drag. I can already see.
That's why this guy's here. Nothing's safe here. I think we're good. Hi I'm Josh Kennedy. I'm the R&D
product manager out of Easton. We're out here at the Fab Nation doing some testing today with Yates.
This is our machine back here that we're using. So we developed this machine to
make accurate shooting for us. So we can do long range testing with the product that we develop.
It's incredibly stable. It's a little overbuilt because of that. So that's why we're out here
doing it. That's what we're using this machine today. Additionally it helps save our shooters
their armor a little bit. So they can get the thousands of rounds that we want to put down
through a bow. Through our arrow. So that's what we're doing out here. And that's what that machine's for.
This is Josh. Engineer. Are you in charge of the engineers? I'm in charge of a group of engineers.
He's a big deal. The R&D manager group. Are you boss of him? Boss of this guy. I've got
two other techs underneath me. He needs a boss. Prototype stuff.
So we're going to shoot the broadheads a couple of times into the target.
So to ensure that we're using like the exact broadhead and not its practice tip where
you know it's practice points. Sometimes these guys have practice points where actually
we bought the real deal and we're we're gluing them shut so that they don't open in the target.
So we can shoot them multiple times. And down here we're marking on?
Yeah we're not we're numbering arrows so that we can control the we can look at velocities of each
arrow individually. And in case there's any outliers tie it to a consistent arrow. Okay.
For each build. Yeah. We'll have a weight and the corresponding number. What do you hope to get out
of this Tristan? I'm trying to decide what I'm going to use for my hunting arrow this year.
So I'm hoping this informs that. I've been waiting to build it until we test all these
veins all these arrows all the broadheads. And yeah that's going to be looking for the
sweet spot that does everything. Not too much lift not too much drag. Well minimize let's see
we want to minimize drag we want the arrow to retain as much speed as possible but we want to
be able to steer broadheads. Okay. As good as possible. So minimize drag maximize lift I think
would be the idea. Usually those go those go hand in hand like you increase drag you increase lift
but yeah trying to see if there's a. Do we have tack veins in the in the study? Yes. Cool. Got
most of the most of the veins. All right Dan what do we got going on here? I honestly don't know
exactly but something cool is about to go down. We got a phantom high-speed camera over there.
We've got a bunch of engineers. We got a ridiculous amount of arrows and veins built up.
Tons of broadheads and I think we're going to help decipher where the sweet spot is. What's
like the best arrow build. That's the goal at least and I'm just here to kind of steal that
knowledge and use it for myself. I'd four-fletch it for a for a fixed blade. Okay. That right there
is a sweet pain too. That silent night. Yeah yeah I like that. I like the three-inch one. Yeah it's
the thinnest vein. Easy to get on there. I've got the um material. Oh not terrible. Uh do you use a
bits? Yeah. Cool. I think that I think that bend's gonna work. I'm gonna start. I hope it does.
Okay where did this come from? Hybrid. 26's. Blazers. 23 max. Air Razors. SK2 Flex Fletch.
What is this? Glads? Glad or Quad X Flex Fletch. Iron Will. Silent Night. DCA. Air Razors.
Uh James is pretty stoked about this bad boy. It's called the 360 Flex Fletch. He's pretty
fired up about that. We got tack veins over here. These are the little 2.25s I think.
Uh what are these? The 187 Flex Fletch and there's more. Fixed blade will serve as our
our our measurement of the force of but the effects of the force of lift. Okay.
How are you taking the ball out of tune? With the rest. The rest. Just literally yeah without
having the human influence we'll just take the rest a quarter inch out of tune. A quarter inch?
It might be. We'll have to we'll have to see. Yeah. The bigger difference that we have the
more quantifiable the data will be. I see. Okay. Um so we have Garmin's that we were using and
Labradar's. The Garmin's are doing a lot better inside than the Labradar's are so we're just
trying to make sure that all of the data is as consistent as possible. Okay. These are different
weights different materials even like if you feel this guy it's going to quit it for me.
364. Really? 90? For a fixed blade? 90. X-Wing? 90? Offset? Straight? Just a bit whatever is
three degree offset. Okay. Rubber duck. This is Bald Eagle. Hey y'all it's Jase from Black Ovis.
So behind me here you can see we're getting to play around with big boy toys. So this is a really
cool ballistic study that's going on with the collaboration between Easton, Mr. James Yates.
Yates in the backcountry for those of you that follow him on Instagram. You can find a lot of
his cool blog posts and stuff through Western Hunter. But what we're actually checking today
and testing are different vein profiles, broadheads, arrow lengths, arrow spines,
diameters of arrows. There will be no more I think this is a good setup. It's going to be an
I know this is a good setup. And not only that we have Christian here from Precision Cut Archery.
So those of you that build your own sight tapes are familiar with it in the target archery world.
He's here and this is going to be an extensive test that will also be applied to his arrow
ballistics. So really cool things going here. We'll recap kind of a total overall findings when
we're done with this but just wanted to give you kind of a behind the scenes as we go through this
testing. It's literally you know a few hundred arrows that we're working with, a few hundred
different combinations of veins, broadheads. You can imagine it we're testing it and we're going
to give you a recap in studio what the findings are and all this will be available to you bow
hunters and target archers and it's going to be a huge tool in the end. So stay tuned you'll see
what we find out.
