Once there lived a young man in a small town. He was always struggling in his life.
No matter what he did, problems followed him like a shadow. He was slowly wearing away
because of these problems and he felt tired of struggling every day. One day,
unable to bear it anymore, he went to a Zen master to seek a solution to his problems.
He told the Zen master about the problems in his life and his suffering. The old master listened
quietly as the man spoke about his pain, failures, and disappointments. He did not interrupt even
once. When the man finished, the master gently got up and went into the adjoining room. The man
thought the master had gone to find some solution to his problems. After some time, the monk came
back with a packet of salt in his hand. He placed a handful of salt in the man's hand. The man
looked at the salt with confusion. He wondered if this was some kind of strange remedy. The master
then pointed to a glass of water and said calmly, put this salt into the glass and drink it.
The man was confused but did as he was instructed. The man stirred the salt and took a sip. At once,
he spat it out. Oh, it tastes horrible. He said, I can't drink this. It is too salty.
The master smiled softly and asked the man to follow him.
They walked together to a nearby lake. The lake was white and peaceful.
Now, said the master, put the whole packet of salt into this lake. The man poured the whole packet
of salt into the lake and mixed it with his hand. Now drink the water, the master said.
The man made a cup with his hands, filled it with water from the lake and drank it.
His face relaxed. It tastes fresh and sweet, just as it should be, he said. I can't taste
salt in this water at all. The master then sat beside the man and said gently,
You see, my friend, the problems in life are like this salt. They do not change,
but how much they trouble you depends on your patience and inner strength.
When your patience is small, even a little problem feels unbearable. But when your patience
becomes strong and wide, the same problems lose their power and begin to appear small.
So, when life becomes difficult, do not lose patience, but increase your inner strength.
Be patient like a lake, not fragile like a glass. Then life's problems will come and go,
but they will not break you or trouble you. The story teaches us that problems are a natural
part of life and cannot be avoided. Every person faces difficulties, disappointments,
and struggles. What truly matters is not how many problems we have, but how we handle them.
Problems remain the same, just like the salt in the story, but their effect on us depends on
our patience and inner strength. When our patience is weak, even small troubles
feel heavy and painful. We become restless, angry, and discouraged.
We start believing that life is unfair and that we are alone in our suffering.
But when we develop patience, calmness, and emotional strength, the same problems
lose their power over us. They no longer disturb our peace.
The story reminds us that a weak mind is like a small glass of water,
while a strong and patient mind is like a lake, which is deep, wide, and calm.
So, when life feels heavy and challenges surround you, remember this lesson.
Do not ask life to become easier, but ask yourself to become stronger and build greater patience.
Every struggle you face is shaping you, expanding you, and preparing you for a stronger future.
Just be like the lake, wide, deep, and unshaken. Because a patient and strong mind is unbreakable,
and such a person can face anything that life brings.
