This wild nature suits the red fox well
The fox does not hibernate
Its fur thickens in winter and allows it to withstand temperatures that can reach at least 15 degrees on the coast
It's time to find some company
Male animals mate with one or more females
They are already a couple
Together they mark their territory to clearly signal their presence
Their honeymoon will last until the end of winter
If the female gives birth they might even stay together until autumn
But they are not out of the woods yet
At dawn the male sets out to find food
He relies on his keen hearing and well-developed sense of smell
The strange staccato cries of a black-billed tanager echo through the woods
The bird struts to impress the females
As the fox tries to locate the source the tetra remains silent
He will not end up in the fox's stomach this morning
The female built a new burrow
Foxes can dig several holes in the snow within their territory
In Europe foxes return to the same place for generations
But here in Russia they have to dig temporary shelters first
When the snow melts they move
The male has spotted a new prey a ptarmigan
Like the tetra the bird is looking for a mate
The fox remains hidden in the woods and follows him from a distance with its keen sense of smell
The ptarmigan seems quite vulnerable However the
open terrain prevents any element of surprise
The fox is not discouraged thereby
But seeing that the ptarmigan was out of his reach he finally gave up
The day starts badly
He returns empty-handed to the burrow
Well then The game keeps the couple united while
they wait for the arrival of their child in the spring
