Bull sharks. Hello aquatic enthusiasts. Today we are going to learn more about bull sharks.
You can read along with us by downloading the bull sharks lesson plan from our website
learnbright.org. What is a bull shark? Bull sharks are large strong fish with thick bodies and short
blunt noses. They usually grow around 7 to 11 feet long and weigh up to 500 pounds.
Some can even grow as long as a surfboard. Their bodies are grayish brown on top and white
underneath which helps them blend into their surroundings in the water. Unlike most other
sharks, bull sharks can live in salt and fresh waters. They are often found in warm shallow
waters near coasts, rivers, and lakes. They are usually solitary which means they like to live
and hunt alone. However, they sometimes come together in groups called schools, especially
when there is a lot of food nearby. These groups are not always permanent and are mostly made for
feeding. Because they are so strong and curious, bull sharks can be dangerous if they feel
threatened or mistake something for food. When it's time to have babies, female bull sharks go
to calm shallow waters to give birth. This helps keep the baby sharks, called pups, safe from
predators. A female bull shark can have between 1 and 13 pups. The pups are born alive and fully
formed, meaning they can swim and hunt immediately. Even though the mother does not care for them
after birth, she chooses safe nurseries like river mouths or estuaries to give the pups a
better chance of survival. What do they eat? Bull sharks are carnivores, which means they eat meat
and they are not picky eaters. Scientists call this an opportunistic feeder, meaning the bull
shark eats whatever is available. They eat many types of animals. Their diet includes fish, sea
turtles, birds, dolphins, and sometimes other sharks. Sometimes they eat crustaceans like crabs
and shrimp. Because bull sharks can live in salt and fresh waters, they have a wide variety of food
choices. These sharks are fast and powerful hunters. They use their strong jaws and sharp,
serrated teeth to grab and tear their prey. They have excellent senses that help them hunt.
Their sense of smell is very strong and they can detect even a small drop of blood in the water.
Bull sharks also use their lateral line system, a row of special sensors along their sides,
to feel vibrations in the water made by moving animals. These tools help them sneak up on prey
and strike quickly, usually from below or behind to surprise their target.
Other Interesting Facts One of the most interesting
facts about bull sharks is that they can survive in salt and fresh waters.
Most sharks can only live in the ocean. Bull sharks are unique in that they have a special
ability to control the salt levels in their bodies using their kidneys and rectal glands.
This allows them to swim far up rivers and even into lakes. Scientists call this ability
osmoregulation. Bull sharks have been found in rivers like the Mississippi in the United States
and the Amazon in South America. Bull sharks have short, broad snouts and a stocky, muscular build
and they exhibit aggressive behavior. They are known to bump into their prey before biting,
which is called the bump and bite technique. This helps them test if the object is food and makes
it easier to catch the animal. Their thick bodies and sudden attacks make them look and act like a
bull, which is how they got their name. They have a special sense called electroreception,
which means they can detect the tiny electric signals made by other animals. Using electro
reception, they can find fish or prey, even hiding in the sand or swimming in dark water.
They do this using special organs on their snouts called ampullae of Lorenzini. This sense
is invaluable in murky rivers where they can't always see clearly. It makes bull sharks excellent
hunters, even in hard-to-see places. Why are bull sharks important to the environment?
Bull sharks play a significant role in keeping the ocean healthy. They are apex predators,
which means they are at the top of the food chain. Eating weak, sick or slower animals
helps balance the populations of fish and other sea creatures. This is important for the whole
ecosystem. If bull sharks didn't hunt, certain animals might become too numerous and hurt the
environment by overeating or spreading disease. While bull sharks are not endangered, scientists
say they are near threatened. This means they could become endangered if we are not careful.
People sometimes accidentally catch bull sharks when fishing or on purpose for their meat or fins.
Pollution and dirty water also hurt the places where bull sharks live and have babies.
We must protect the oceans and rivers and make smart fishing rules to protect bull sharks and
other marine creatures. Let's keep the shark population healthy for the future.
We just learned a lot about bull sharks. Let's review.
True or false? Bull sharks can survive in both freshwater and saltwater.
True. Choose the words the author would say best describe the bull shark.
