Julian Champagnie finished with a team-high 36 points along with 11 three pointers and 6 rebounds for the Spurs, while Victor Wembanyama tallied 31 points, 13 rebounds and 2 three pointers in the game. Jalen Brunson recorded 29 points, 8 assists and 5 three pointers. The Spurs improve their record to 24-9 with the win, while the Knicks fall to 23-10 for the season.
It is the final day of 2025,
and what better place to ring in the new year
than the Alamo City, San Antonio, Texas,
inside of the Frostbank Center.
It's a rematch of the Emirates NBA Cup Finals
between the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks.
OG Ananobi, Mohamed Diawara, Carl Anthony Towns,
Mikhail Bridges, and Jalen Brunson,
their star under head coach Mike Brown
in his first season with the Knicks.
For the Spurs, just tuning in,
no Devin Bissell tonight,
out with a left adductor strain,
missing his first game of the season.
Champagny back in the starting lineup in place of him.
Barnes with Minyama, Castle, good to go tonight.
And Fox, Castle questionable,
coming in with a left thumb sprain,
but he is ready to go.
Both of these teams, 23 and nine,
entering this game tonight.
The Spurs, when the tip is presented by Pizza Hut,
and we're underway.
And the Cleveland Cavaliers also got hot
from beyond the arc,
and then our guys try to do it themselves,
so get back to playing some good team ball here,
and feed him that man.
Feed him!
Ananobi, driving, passing off, Bridges,
mid-range is good,
and he's one of the best mid-range jump shooters
in the league.
Yeah, he gets to his spot and he raises.
You're listening to me too much there,
you don't tell us.
Lembe tapped it back, but Brunson snuck through.
Hey, went off high off glass.
Castle went for the steal,
now Brunson has the advantage, the numbers.
Diawara, second three, it's good.
Here he is, driving again, Lembe passing out.
Harrison on the drive.
HB up to Lembe Diaba!
Don't try to throw that little hook shot at me, Victor.
Oh, I thought he got it.
Almost the steal.
Bridges walks into a three and knocks it down.
That one, a bit short.
Yeah, he's got to give up a quick one.
Castle, season opening, out to Barnes.
Barnes, oh my goodness, Harrison Barnes!
Two left-handed point guards
who were some of the best in the league,
and there's one of them, blown by all.
New York had to take the first time out of the game
under seven minutes to go here first quarter.
And Fox with the theft on Bridges.
Waits got bumped, no call, but got the layup.
Quickly up to Champagny.
Back to Castle, throw it up.
Cornette on the run!
Outstanding effort there from Steph Castle.
Wore the sleeve on his right arm last game,
now wearing a sleeve on his right leg.
Champagny, it drops in for three.
That's a kind bounce that was able to
hide behind that screen, square up his shoulders.
That rotation got that bounce.
Carl Anthony Towns.
Spurs' third turnover here in the first quarter.
Brunson, at time, here comes New York.
Brunson attacking, off glass.
Two-way contract for New York.
Pat for three, that was deep.
He's feeling it, just 0.9%, so just under 40.
Champagny's already hit one, make it two!
And then Cornette got hit a big part of his game,
but can turn it on when he wants to.
Pulls up the middie, he can hit from anywhere.
It sounds like a good children's book.
Here's Kelvin, no, second time, yes, for the llama!
Oh, there you go.
No, Cornette tapped it out.
Brunson got it.
McCuller cutting underneath on 40.
Got it.
All the luxuries.
Cage has got some ranch.
He's got a lot of animals.
McBride, he loves that step-back stop on a dime.
Three balls, stopping on a dime.
Fifth year out of West Virginia.
Myles McBride, Keldon fouled, and it goes!
And he's letting the crowd know about it.
Two minutes.
On 40, looking for an option.
Brunson couldn't get it.
McBride, quick-fire three.
Drafting Dylan Harper, how's that?
Ooh, I like that.
That's a good one.
There's a lot of Spurs memories to pick from in 2025.
Keldon made a bunch of memories this year.
Closing for Mr. Olympia,
and I don't, that doesn't make me one bit angry.
McCuller gets it back, fires a three,
and hits it, first quarter.
It's short.
That's good, I like that shot.
I like him gravitating right to the open spot in that zone.
Go ahead and continue to take that one.
McCuller for three in the story.
Spurs haven't been red hot.
Other teams have.
Last two.
Shot clock turned off.
Fox, the nasty dribble.
And the bucket.
Chris Paul dribbled there, right?
A little trickier.
Haporti running the floor, got it at the buzzer.
After he sucks in the defense,
our guys move the ball around.
Carl Anthony Towns, fouled, it rolls down.
Let's hope we come out with a wacky win.
Well, yeah, it could be wacky if they win.
That's okay.
Fox, drills it.
That's my answer.
Working the offensive rebound.
Quickly turns, quickly fades,
quickly scores.
Another injury to the Spurs.
They've had to deal with so many.
Champagny, with time, for three.
Castle, with speed.
Victor.
Lemonyamas in double figures with 11.
Them and Champagny combining for 23 of the Spurs'
48 points in the first half.
Just under the eight minute mark and stolen.
Here's Castle on the break.
Has Wemby running?
Oh my, what was that?
What was that?
McBride, nice pass inside, Ananobi dunks it.
Castle spots up and they're running.
Ananobi dunks it again.
Not going down, right back the other way.
Clarkson, got it.
Turnover number six of the first half for the Spurs.
Bridges, Clarkson for three.
Lemonyama, back up at the scorer's table.
Fox, step back, yep.
It's the right idea,
but Julien's caught between two defenders.
There's nothing he can really do with it there.
Ananobi, no look, nice pass, Hapori the jam.
It's a lot more fun to play that way
than just, instead of just watching the guy
dribble, dribble, dribble all over the perimeter.
Lemonyama, made his first two shots of the game.
Lemonyama, another three.
Banks it in.
Remember, coming into this game 17 of 75
in their last two games.
I kind of like Victor getting another three ball there
because he's knocked down two in a row.
And he just swatted Brunson.
One of the league's best scorers.
Lemonyama, Harrison Barnes, the crossover on Towns.
He drives at him, floats and fades to bank it in.
How about that hesitation?
Brunson, cat, drives and scores,
plus a foul, they call that on Victor.
That time, no good.
Lemonyama grabs his now 10th rebound.
He's got a double-double.
In 17 minutes of action, Fox with a blur
right down the lane.
It was, it was like three or four fakes
all wrapped up into one.
Fox up to 13 points.
McBride for three, shooting 56% from the field,
with 50% from downtown.
Castle hangs, went back to throw it to Wemby.
Please, please, from Victor.
Brunson, McBride, fades away.
I mean, everything was lost in Vegas
at the hands of New York.
McBride, again, again.
Goodness, at this point, I mean,
the only thing you can do is not let him catch the ball.
Next back up by 14, Lemonyama almost lost the handle
and puts it in.
New York back up by 14, Champenny for three.
That's four threes for Jules.
Up to Castle, pushing Castle.
First basket of the game.
Got his own miss.
HB moves it, Champenny.
Harper's stuck.
Lemonyama moves it, Champenny ties his career high.
He's got six threes.
I'll take it.
I hope everybody's gotten the memo.
He has it going on.
Bridges, responds.
It just cannot happen after a made basket.
Yeah, I'm still concerned about buckets
that the Knicks get after our made baskets.
Lemonyama, again.
Yeah, that one looked awfully pure.
He came off that, wow.
That's a big man.
Yeah, that's a four-point swing.
In the comeback, you just can't have
those kind of turnovers.
Champenny!
I would get it if I put four black jerseys
on the other side of the court
to allow Keldon to go to work.
Keldon for the win!
Zone here, Sean.
Looks like it was a man-to-man to start.
Clarkson, another.
Good rest for that flight to Indiana.
It's a long one.
Brunson, a deep three.
Shot clock turned off.
Brunson just hit the three.
The crossover, the step back,
and he got another.
Blows a kiss to the...
Brunson got going a little bit there.
He's on the bench to start the fourth,
but Clarkson's back in.
Fox with the steal.
Nobody was looking.
Diama!
K.J.!
Lemonyama!
And he's holding his left knee.
He has not gotten up yet.
And that is, that is not good.
And Spurs give him some love on the way out.
Fox, shot clock going down.
Kelly Olenek fakes the three.
Picks up the dribble.
De'Aaron has to fire.
Cornette was there.
Right back to Fox.
Loose ball.
Bridges tapped it to Clarkson.
And Clarkson dunks it.
Tried to walk it off.
He couldn't.
Castle.
No.
Pull it quickly up.
Clarkson breakaway again.
And got another bucket.
Timeout Spurs.
Seven of 12.
Lemonyama had 31 points and 13 rebounds.
Inside.
Kelvin.
Outstanding job again.
Gonna need that beef here in the fourth.
Towns the pass.
Bridges.
And Mike Brown, the head coach of the Knicks.
Some kind of spark.
Threw some life back into him.
Cole at the up fake.
Ananobi.
Shot clock going down.
And his third big dunk of the evening.
Because now it's in the lane.
When you have Luke Cornette out on the perimeter
guarding smaller guys, the lane's absolutely wide open.
Champagny.
Eight threes.
And they needed every single one of them tonight.
Yeah.
Champagny again.
That ties Chuck Persons.
Spurs single game three point record.
Here's my body in the mid range.
Exceptional teacher of the game.
Great shooter as well.
All right, so Champagny has the hot hand.
Fox, the floater.
Yes.
That's before breakfast.
He's all that and more.
Back to back floaters for De'Aaron Fox.
Brunson.
Probing.
Champagny chasing him.
Brunson.
Last second pass out to Clarkson.
He's got 20 points off the bench.
Fox right back.
Champagny.
Fox the steal.
Up to Champagny.
Steps back again.
And the Spurs can take the lead.
Just find Julian.
Set a screen.
Fox waits and scores.
Timeout New York.
There's no Victor Wiminyama out there on the floor.
Maybe a little exhale, a little sigh of relief.
Great contest.
Towns missed it.
Got his own miss.
Back up for two.
Spinning his way inside.
Fox stops.
And puts down another bucket.
So you're playing that two-man game
where we're trying to keep Julian from catching the ball.
They double Brunson to get the ball out of his hands.
McBride for three.
Puts it down.
The guy who comes to double team first
has got to get out.
And then you got to communicate and find your guys.
Fox.
Cornett gobbles it up.
Barnes threw it away.
10 turnovers for the Spurs tonight.
McBride got it.
Spurs by one.
Barnes one leg.
Cornett, yes!
No, too strong.
Loose ball picked up by the Knicks.
Brunson stepping back for three.
Got it.
Fox goes into the backcourt.
Barnes fakes the pass.
Now into Kelden.
Right back to Barnes.
That's the guy you want.
And they foul him.
Brunson made the big step back three.
Up the court.
Pulls up.
Missed it.
Rebound to Kelden.
And a foul.
Fox, Barnes, Champagny, Johnson defending.
Seven seconds.
Good job by Steph.
Get back to Koelig.
McBride three.
Nope.
Rebound to Kelden.
Johnson.
And the Spurs come back from down 19 on New Year's Eve.
That three counted.
Yeah, but the game's over.
And the Spurs are a little upset that Brunson shot that.
