Hey guys miss warren here today i'm going to talk to you about how to get started with
Clay, we are making clay dragon eyes in my class
Texture is our focus for our element of art
And we're going to be adding
An eye to the at the end of the dragon as well
So the first thing i'm going to be giving y'all is you will have a bag
And I will ask you to put your name on where the white part is you're going to keep your clay
Inside the bag when you're not using it, so it doesn't dry out
If it uh, if you're going to be storing it over the weekend
You're going to wrap it in a wet paper towel before you put it away and make sure the bag is closed
Well, so it doesn't dry out now
I already kind of started on this and when I give you fresh clay you do not have to do the next step
Um, but since I started on this and I want to start over i'm going to show you all how to wedge
so, um
When you get your clay out of the bag, you always want your clay on a tray. I have clay boards in my classroom
So keep your clay
On the tray. Let me get this a little bit closer to me is the rule as we are working
So i'm going to get my clay out
And I kind of part started but I want to start over
And if it's getting a little bit dry
At every table i'll have a bowl of slip and you can rub a little bit of slip anywhere. It's cracking
To keep it moist
So i'm going to wedge wedging is to mix up your clay and make sure there's no air bubbles in it
If you start over you're going to wedge, but if you um
Or have fresh clay you don't need to wedge. So i'm mixing up the clay. I'm not
Making it flat as a pancake i'm putting it into a rock shape and i'm turning
and firmly
kind of tossing
into the clay board
Notice that i'm not lifting it super high. You don't need to lift it super high. You're just kind of firmly pressing it
Into the clay board as you turn it now notice one of the reasons i'm staying on the clay board is
If I were to do this on the table, it would stick to the table
If the surface is slick the clay will stick
so you want to do this about
40 times turn toss turn toss keep it in a rock shape. We don't want to pancake it out yet
This will help us mix
Our piece now if we have a huge piece
Like larger than a piece of rock here. This is about a little bit smaller than a baseball fits in my hand
But if you had a large piece you would wedge like kind of like kneading dough
Um, but this is how you wedge a small piece of clay the turn and toss method
Until it's nice and mixed
Okay, so i'm going to go ahead and stop the video here since we've now seen how to wedge
And then i'm going to continue with another video on how to get started with the clay dragon eye
